Career advice for a lost 25 year old

P.S. this is not a “job hunting” post.

I'm currently a full-time marketing student (25M domestic student, at a non-G8 university based in Sydney), and decided to take the plunge because I managed to get half of my degree slashed off from RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning).

However, I'm currently facing a dillemna. I don't have much work experience, and my most recent experience was at Vivid Sydney, as a volunteer. At the moment, I've began applying for jobs since last week (a combination of retail and market research/marketing internship roles briefly), and I don't seem to be getting much traction.

Which roles would anyone advise I apply for that require \*minimal work experience\* and is willing to take on someone whose willing to learn the ropes? I'm absolutely willing to look into part-time/casual work in any white-collar envrionment, even if unrelated to my degree?

My long-term goal is to work in marketing/market research and consumer insights, or in a role which involves understanding people (not in a healthcare environment) and making an impact in an innovative or collaborative environment. I don't want to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment because I've previously attempted a Certificate III in Indivdiual Support (accelerated), and I realised it wasn't for me while on placement as I'd come home with constant headaches, and other complications from the stressful environment.

Moreover, my interests involve working in dynamic, interesting environments (think: events, maybe even becoming a tour guide, or working in a digital marketing/social media agency). I'd really be keen on interning at a social media/digital marketing agency sooner or later to kickstart my career!

Please provide me with some guidance here because I'm genuinely unsure what to do (I have three semesters remaining until my degree is finished). I really don't want to finish my degree to render myself unemployed and not in a full-time position by then because I'm fully aware that the graduate/entry-level job market for marketing graduates is not particularly in the best state at the moment.

I have absolutely no desire to pursue further study for the sake of a career at this point, I want to go to work because I'm starting to get fed up with uni, despite having nine units remaining (I'm taking three units this semester).

I love marketing at the same time, however I don't mind working in an adjacent (or even another) white-collar industry that doesn't require further study as I'd like to transition to the workplace. I'm starting to get fed up with uni, despite my strong interests in marketing.

Portfolios and internships

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a second semester marketing student based in Australia (domestic student), and I don’t have a lot of projects to put on my portfolio besides afew university projects (one of them involved doing an individual empathy report based on a target segment conducting surveys comprising of 10 anonymised responses, extracted insights and gathered relevant academic sources, then developing and pitching a product idea as a group derived from my report - which I’ve put onto my portfolio besides my recent volunteering experience at a major public event, Vivid Sydney).

This semester, I’m aiming to land an internship at an agency to gain more experience in marketing. However, is it advised that I cold-call digital marketing and social media agencies within a 0-60 minute commute by public transportation from my home over email, and phone expressing interest for interning at an agency? (There seems to be a you need experience to get more experience phenomenon in marketing in Australia somehow)

Last but not least, how can I gain more relevant experience to add into my portfolio? Im not sure how to approach this strategically.

Please provide recommendations on what I can do?
I’m currently unemployed and would love to gain marketing experience at an agency (however I don’t mind going in-house, except they mostly expect previous internship experience for in-house internships). Also, I don’t mind starting off in agency because I enjoy working with people, and relating with consumers (however I’d love to gain more experience)

First year student wanting to break into marketing

Background: I’m a first year marketing student (undergrad) from Australia, with three semesters remaining because of RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning/Credit Transfer), with very minimal work experience (I only managed to volunteer at Vivid Sydney this year so far). However, I’m aiming to break into the marketing industry through internships, however my concern is should I go for unpaid internships at an agency (or volunteer marketing roles at a NFP organisation) for the sake of experience? I really enjoyed my first year marketing units so far!

Also, which certifications would you advise someone who wants to keep up with the latest marketing trends (AI and automation)?

Moreover, for enhancing my content creation skills using Canva, and storytelling, what brief courses would you recommend?

Also, I don’t mind working at a PR/Comms/marketing agency to gain experience, with an eventual goal of moving towards an in-house marketing roles within the social media (or digital marketing) space.

Given my circumstances, what would be the best way to start?

So far, I’ve only managed to scrape by borderline Distinction grades in the first few marketing units I’ve completed so far. I’m also concerned because the job market for marketing graduates so far has been extremely bleak, and I kinda regret pursuing this degree in hindsight (however I’m aiming to aim for at least a Distinction average because I’m too concerned about my future)

Certificate III in Community Pharmacy

Hey everyone,

I’m currently a full-time Marketing student (with roughly a distinction average during my first semester, and three semesters remaining, currently unemployed while studying). So far, my most recent work experience was volunteering at Vivid (which involved wayfinding, managing queues, and responding to visitor inquiries). However, I’m strongly considering undertaking a Certificate III in Community Pharmacy while undertaking full-time uni next year, as I’d like to potentially work in a pharmacy (as a pharmacy assistant), in the event I can’t secure a marketing internship this semester.

For anyone who has completed a Certificate III in Community Pharmacy, what are the job prospects, and is it easy to find a role upon completing placement? What does the job entail?

Moreover, I’m concerned about not being able to break into marketing (the grad job market for marketing seems absolutely brutal, that I fear for my future), which is the rationale behind why I’m trying to excel in my second undergraduate degree (while also hopefully trying to get into marketing), so I can consider postgraduate pharmacy (I’m more than willing to complete the required pre-requisite subjects for Master of Pharmacy program if marketing doesn’t work out) as a career pivot, and I’d like to gain practical experience within a pharmacy environment prior to jumping ship!

RE: Special Consideration

I recently caught a cold (symptoms began yesterday arvo) and have an exam tomorrow, and I’m feeling restless (I feel off) and my throat feels clogged and I keep coughing and sneezing.

Should I just sit tomorrows exam or apply for SC and get a medical certificate? (I also have another exam on the 15th, should I possibly not apply for SC for that as well)
