What is a movie you are glad you saw before reading the book?

I really like World War Z. I think it's a fantastic zombie movie. I love how raw it is.

This is obviously just my opinion but I think movies have kind of poisoned what we think "professional soldier" looks like. An example would be the first Resident Evil movie. These are supposed to be the hardest of the hard but they immediately panic when faced with danger and then hide their bites. How are these people the best of the best? To me it just comes across as silly.

I know some people dislike a lot about the army base scenes in World War Z but I think they are brilliant because they are so raw. The soldiers know they will not survive but they don't panic - they stay focused and on mission. When the captain gets bit everyone immediately knows he must be shot. It's not big and dramatic. He just says something like "It's okay boys. I got this one" and you hear the shot. I haven't come across a lot of big zombie flicks that are willing to be understated.

Anyway I'm not gonna die on this hill but there is a lot I really, really like about the World War Z movie.

With that being said, I'm also a reader. I just started reading the book and I almost laughed out loud two pages into it. I immediately got why fans of the book hate the movie. I don't think a movie could really represent the book accurately; it's too detailed. An HBO type of 10 episode show like The Last of Us or something would be better.

I'm actually glad I watched the movie first. That lets me enjoy the movie for what it is while also enjoying the book. If I had read the book first I may very well have not been able to stand the movie.

So what is your movie + book combo where you are glad you saw the movie first so you can enjoy both?

[LF Players] [Asynchronous Play by Post][DnD 5e][roleplay only][18+ only]

Howdy! My name is Rocky and I am going to run my first play by post
mini-campaign. I’m a late 30s non-binary trans masc with 3 cats & two dogs that loves Dnd.
This is a role-play only mini-campaign and the version technically doesn’t matter but I play 5e and that’s where I’ll be pulling the lore from.

The basic idea is that your character has died and is waiting in the Fugue Plane to see if you get picked up by a god for your afterlife. Each character will tell tales about themselves and their lives that they think best show why their deity should accept them into their domain.

The player characters are each resting near a wall and have been waiting 3 days so far. You only have 10 days for your soul to be claimed. Some recent bricks in the City of Judgement suggest that you tell tales of your deeds to try to avoid their own fate.

The gamifying comes in with the voting system. Each player will give me up to 3 deities their character would be happy to go with. If one is preferred that’s okay too. I will aggregate the info about the deities like (most recent) pantheon, alignment, etc and each week the players will privately vote for which traits their stories most exemplified. I’ll take that information and fold into the npc feedback from the “bricks”.

The mini-campaign will be hosted in my discord and set up as a forum. The stories will be told in rounds. Each round will begin on (most likely) Monday and players will have until Friday to post their story. Then Friday night & Saturday will be voting. I’ll make my npcs posts and we’ll begin the next round. I may or may not have a strict schedule. It’s most important to role-play afterall. But the general idea will stay the same. Multiple days to post and read.

I haven’t done this before but I am really interested in the idea. If you really like writing (don’t worry there will be a loose word limit) or want to explore a favorite character this just might be for you!
Even though it’s play by post I don’t want to get lost in all the characters so I’m probably looking for 2 - 4 more players depending on which of my friends decide to join in.
I am currently thinking something like 4 - 6 rounds? We’ll see once we get everyone together and finalize the details.

I think my one sort of caveat? Content warning? Would be that this isn’t just a writing exercise. I will have npcs responding to the stories, other characters will respond, etc. This is gonna be a fun way to explore a character but please be aware of how personal or treasured your character is. If someone’s character responding dismissively or sarcastically to your character would be upsetting they are probably not the one to bring to this campaign. I respect that some characters' stories are really personal and I’d hate for anyone’s fun to be ruined because they felt disrespected instead of being able to enjoy the role-play and banter.

The mini-campaign will be entirely in my discord except for the voting will probably be a google poll for anonymous voting. I want to spend the next week or so finalizing who’s participating and what the guidelines will be. (like word count, how long people have to post, etc)
Everyone will fill out a lines and veils form and each post will be required to have content warnings.

If you're interested please fill out this form

Trans friendly urgent care / same day care?

What it says on the tin. Looking for a trans friendly urgent care / same day kind of place. The one's where it's billed as a doctors visit. I don't need trans specific services I just want recommendations for where I can go without being hassled. Preferably from other queer or trans people that have had good experiences.

What are your favorite DLC combinations? Do you switch them around?

I usually play with all the DLC on and just pick and choose what I play with. There's now so many DLC that I've been considering *gasp* turning some off for different runs. lol I know lots of people do it I just hadn't myself. But with the new DLC (right now) it feels like some of the DLC are in direct contradiction of each other. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm excited about the swimming!

Really who knows because it might still be a ways away from release. Either way I've decided to start mixing it up. What are some of ya'll favorite combos? Do you like to do them with challenge runs?

[v14] [dnd 5e] Need help turning off random circles

For anyone that doesn't know cats are extremely competent with technology. They are better than most coders in the world. Let a cat walk across your laptop and you may never open it again. One of my cats opened a laptop in recovery mode before.

All this is to say. My big ass cat sat on my keyboard and there are now permeant random circles all across this map. They are no in the placeables section. Everything in the placables tab is accounted for. I have NO idea how to get rid of these damn circles lol

Cat Tax

(the one on the left is the current culprit but the one on the right is the one that opened the laptop in recovery mode. She's 20 so I guess with age comes tech wisdom)

Looking for recs for content about playing simplified DnD or DnD for kids

I'm volunteering for a charity event and will be running multiple one shots for kids in the hospital. It's a few hours and that's it. I'm thinking I'm going to have premade characters, simplified stats, and I'm thinking two or three simple quests they can pick from.

I need to be kid appropriate but also these are kids that might be sick from treatments, tired from illness, etc. I want it to be accessible most of all so I'd rather the mechanics be simplified than leave a kid behind because they don't feel good. Does this make sense for anyone that's done something similar? I'll be running 2014 rules but I'm not really worried about the mechanics - it's more everything else lol

I have a general idea but this isn't my wheelhouse. I usually play with adults and focus on RP and difficult combat. I would love recommendations for youtube videos or websites or accounts that cover doing similar modifications.

Anyone familiar with working with Dallas Pets Alive?

I am looking into starting fostering cats. Specifically I would like to work with one of the programs that helps watch peoples pets while their owners are in rehab. It looks like Dallas Pets Alive has such a program. Has anyone worked with them before? Did you like the experience?
