My friend is desperately wanting a HPII CD but can’t seem to find any, is there anywhere I can find one?
So my mom sent her dad a list of albums she knows I like out of intent to give them to me. One was Currents (one of my favorite albums of all time!!) & IT CAME TODAY!!! I didn’t even know she did that until I got it like 20 minutes ago. 2nd piece of Tame Impala physical media I’ve gotten, with the first one being a Deadbeat CD given to me by my grand aunt. Let It Happen #1!!! (Also, unsure of which flair this would go under, sorry)
My 2nd Weezer vinyl (after Blue) & I’m hoping that there are some Maladroit records I can find because I absolutely LOVE that album, please educate me on the existence of Maladroit physical media out there.
I once filled my whole queue with those songs, & not together, just the whole thing with only one of the songs then I did it with the other
So we all hear the comparisons to The Beatles, Lemon Demon, Will Wood & Jack Stauber, but there are other musicians I find left out when it comes to Tally Hall fan recommendations.
They Might Be Giants - I’ve only heard Flood & half of Lincoln, but DAMN they sound like something 90% of people in this fandom would love A LOT.
Weezer - More on Rob’s side (I mean he literally did a cover of Why Bother?), but Weezer I feel has a bit of influence on Tally Hall, like I could think of Greener being on Maladroit or Two Wuv being on Weezer (Green).
ElectroCult Circus - VERY VERY small band in terms of fans, I think there are only like 30 or so. ECC, despite coming a year before Tally Hall, has a close enough sound that I think this fandom would enjoy. I could see Why on Good & Evil
MGMT - Came around the same time as Tally Hall & has a distinct sound that I could pair with any of the Tallies, they’re kind of like an electronic Tally Hall that isn’t too electronic (like Chonny Jash)
Minimall - I was going to not include them (since they collaborated with Joe & used to be called Titty Hall) BUT I’ve recently started listening to them & I can find an influence, but still keeping unique.
Honorable mentions: Oingo Boingo, Gotye, Beach Boys
Dishonorable mention: Will Wood (I see Will Wood & Tally Hall get compared a lot even though I really don’t see it that much, as big enjoyers of both)
Firstly, this list is clearly missing a lot, so here’s a Google doc version - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AYyhL7v35sa\_KBZX00MWZWlAmChXx\_u\_Xc2svynwW68/edit?usp=drivesdk
I haven’t gotten most of the live shows down yet, so expect changes in the near future.
This took hours of listening & just over a year of dedication so I hope you guys find some parts in this list that make you go “this guy like me fr” & also “ah hell nah”
Also respond to this form where YOU get to rank (some of) the Tallyverse songs! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdTAHqjpR-3PiUsDZGvZMMDN0Cg9KzBWecjtaX3TzHV74EPIw/alreadyresponded
I shockingly got good reception from my Good & Evil ranking despite there being some definitely very hot takes there. This one will feature some hot takes as well so buckle up or perish
By the way the ones with quotes surrounding it are the ones where I prefer the 2008 version more than the 2005/2006 versions (will not do for bonus tracks because they’re only present on the 2008 release)
& one last thing, I’m going to post my full ranking of the rankable Tally Hall songs (+ more not on the tierlist I’m using) probably tomorrow.
Dream - 7/10 (A tier)
The lowest one on this album is still pretty good. Nothing really much to say about this one despite it being the final one on the 2008 release of Marvin’s.
Hidden in the Sand - 7/10 (A tier)
It’s good, definitely overplayed but I still enjoy it. I sing it to myself sometimes when I’m alone (either that or Dream Sweet in Sea Major)
Greener - 8/10 (A tier)
It’s kind of a generic, yet good song. It gives me Weezer (Green) vibes which is an alright thing (I much prefer Pinkerton & Blue btw), I can tell that Rob had Weezer in mind when writing this song (we know he’s a fan because of his cover of Why Bother & he interpolated Day It Ain’t So in Stationary Love). One of my friends says that it’s in his top 3 Tally Hall songs… which I just don’t get I’m so sorry
Be Born - 8/10 (A tier)
I like this one! It is a fun little tune that brings out my inner Kentucky. Rob is one of those artists that can pull off country better than most country artists, he is in that category along with Billy Joel & Weird Al Yankovic (crazy trio). This is easily the most hated song in the community but I don’t give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudge
13 - 8/10 (A tier)
Yeah I like orchestral music, even when it’s short. What’re you gonna do?
Just Apathy - 9/10 (A tier)
Yet another really hated song, this one I get even less because it’s just a bop! I honestly don’t have much to say about this song other than it’s just a cool song that gives me MCR vibes.
“Haiku” - 9/10 (A tier)
Charming little song… HE WROTE A HAIKU FOR YOU! It’s one of those songs
That feels like something you’d hear on a vacation, or something like that
(If you don’t get it, I wrote two haikus for this! This is one as well.)
Mucka Blucka - 9/10 (A tier)
WAIT WAIT WAIT BEFORE YOU GET YOUR TOMATOES, TORCHES & PITCHFORKS PLEASE LET ME EXPLAIN. I’m not usually a fan of sportsy sounding music but this is an exception, also I gave it a boost because it made me laugh on my first listen
Two Wuv (halfway!) - 9/10 (A tier)
I much prefer the demo, honestly. That’s all I gotta say
Banana Man - 9/10 (A tier)
I’m pretty sure this is my sister’s favorite song because she can’t stop singing it. Also bnaner
The Whole World and You - 10/10 (S tier)
SUCH A JOLLY LITTLE SONG!! I LOVE IT I LOVE IT SOO MUCH!!
Welcome to Tally Hall - 10/10 (S tier)
I can’t come up with anything anymore other than this is the only song where I prefer the 2006 version the most
The Bidding - 10/10 (S tier)
TikTok song, therefore bad (/satire)
Spring and a Storm - 10/10+ (SS tier)
This was the song that took the longest to get this high, as I used to just think it was an alright song but it grew on me over time.
“Ruler of Everything” - 10/10+ (SS tier)
My first “Tally Hall” song, & MAN what a great introduction, wish I looked more into them 3 years ago instead of do absolutely nothing all day but bedrot
Good Day - 10/10+ (SS tier)
This was their first hit, & GOD DAMN. I get how people absolutely loved this song before it even was on MMMM in 2005. Andrew is just the goat man
“Taken for a Ride” - 10/10+ (SS tier)
THE BEST??? THIS IS MY DAD’S FAVORITE SONG AT THE MOMENT & IM SO HAPPY BECAUSE THIS SONG IS JUST STUNNING IN EVERY WAY. SO CLOSE TO BEING MY FAVORITE “TALLY HALL” SONG BECAUSE OF JUST HOW GOOD IT IS WOWOWOWOWOWOWWOWOWOWOWOOWWOW ANDREW IS COOOOOOKING. I TELL YOU HE COOKED & IS COOOOOOOOOOOOOKING.
Just because there are more Good & Evil S(+) tiers, I still prefer MMMM due to it being more enjoyable to listen to all the way through.
Anyways yeah hello goodbye
I was looking through Joe songs on Genius & realized that this part of We are in Space is left up for questioning. Does anyone have any idea of what it could say?
I was bored so I’m gonna rank Good & Evil songs, I’ll do MMMM soon
Cannibal - 4/10 (D tier)
I’ve never really enjoyed this song, it’s instrumental isn’t the greatest & is honestly pretty bland, which was a disappointment when I was going through my first listens of Tally Hall’s main 2 albums back in June of last year.
Who You Are - 7/10 (A tier)
Yeah this is a pretty good song! I know most people hate it but I’m a sucker for some good (& evil) medieval sounding music! This was my 2nd least favorite Tally Hall song when I first ranked it which was not really that cool of me since there are definitely worse songs
Out in the Twilight - 9/10 (A tier)
I was looking through my ranking & I was shocked that this was my 3rd least favorite from the album since how high I ranked it, just comes to show how frickin awesome this album is. Anyways I love this song
You & Me - 9/10 (A tier)
There’s a trend of Rob songs being lower, which was honestly kind of expected since his writing isn’t the greatest in my opinion but he definitely has some bangers like Cuckoo, Flamingo & Lightshine
The Trap - 10/10 (S tier)
Remember when I said that this was worse than Who You Are? I am so sorry. This song is so fire but it still isnt as good as any Hawaii: Part II song (idk why I’m bringing HPII into this). The Trap’s harmonies are great & the writing is actually insanely clever & I am glad that it majorly differs from the lyrics in The Gap.
A Lady - 10/10 (S tier)
Ah yes, a simple 1 minute reprise & the demo for &! I already said Joe much I like medieval sounding music so this was BOUND to be high! Speaking of medieval
Sacred Beast - 10/10 (S tier)
WHY IS THIS SO HATED??? It took me a few listens to actually hear the autotuned voice & everyone complains about it but I personally love it.
Halfway point yaaaay
Never Meant to Know - 10/10 (S tier)
An S tier Rob song on Good & Evil??? Damn!! If only Rob could cook this hard every time! This is a pretty awesome opener & I get why that Tally Hall fan I met irl said that their favorite was NMtK (also if that person is out there reading this can you please send those Tally Hall live performance recordings & those photos I really want some new Tally media)
You - 10/10 (S tier)
Worst Andrew song be like:
Anyways this song is really peaceful & calming & it helps me wind down after a long & hard day & it acts as my comfort song at times. It makes me feel cozy & happy & one time I fell to sleep because of this song
(Honorable mention goes to Light & Night)
Misery Fell - 10/10 (S tier)
Two Andy songs in a row?? Hell yeah! This song gives me a weird sense of anemoia (which is a term used to describe nostalgia for something you didn’t experience) but it’s an amazing song, I think of it as the “evil” side of “You” as it gives off the same vibe but Misery Fell feels more threatening. Also Zubin’s vocals shine the most here
Turn the Lights Off - 10/10+ (SS tier)
Yet another overhated masterpiece. Though I do prefer the 2006 demo, this version is also some of the PEAKEST music I have heard from the Tallies. It was the 2nd Good & Evil song I heard after I started actually listening to Tally Hall, & though it is overplayed it’s still pretty good (same with The Bidding)
& - 10/10+ (SS tier)
Until just yesterday this was my favorite Tally Hall song from the main 2 albums, but then I relistened to it & realized that there are better “Tally Hall” songs out there. This song was so good that it made me want to get into Tally Hall (discovered at ~4:53 AM EST on January 20th, 2025) & I played this song for my dad on the day I found it & he was hooked as well (if you’re reading this dad, I love you)
Fate of the Stars - 10/10+ (SS tier)
Not even Andrew’s best song but DAMN. This song is absolutely CRAZY & it kinda made me cry the first time I heard it. It also reminds me of I Want You (She’s So Heavy) (& by extension, Because) by The Beatles & this was the song that actually led to me listening to more Beatles content, so hell yeah Andy. Andrew can & will cook at any given moment & I am honestly pretty excited for his new album (unless if it has major Illicit Ghost influence, I’m not a big fan of Illicit Ghost, I want this to be more like sketches (3d)). Also that “MIND CONTROL MIND RESTART” part is just… wow. The clever usage of the Ave Maria sample is pretty good too, the harmonies are probably the best in any Tally Hall song & the changes are neat. But there’s still one more song.
Hymn for a Scarecrow - 10/10+ (SS tier)
My favorite song from the 2 albums. This song is genuinely one of the greatest pieces of music I have ever came across & the part where it gets all chaotic is JUST EXECUTED TO FUCKING WELL IT MAKES ME WANNA MERGE WITHOUT LOOKING. This song makes me feel close to nature which is an amazing feeling. If only Joe could cook like this every time… sigh… (just kidding TME is my favorite song ever teehee but &y is still better) Hymn for a Scarecrow is a beautiful song, every part of it. At first I didn’t like Ross’ vocals (I’m not the biggest Ross fan when he does backing vocals, the main vocal songs are really good though) but they grew on me over time.
Thanks for reading my ramblings
