If You're a Potential Client, Please Don't Do This

If you're hiring a musician for your wedding, as well as a separate DJ/Band for your wedding, Thumbtack is going to charge a pro based on the MAXIMUM amount of hours, and the MAXIMUM budget range you tell them.

You need a pianist for your ceremony and cocktail hour, for a max of 2 hours? DON'T TELL THUMBTACK YOU NEED ONE FOR SIX HOURS. THEY BASE THE LEAD PERCENTAGE THEY CHARGE A PRO ON SIX HOURS for a $1,250 GIG.

I know there's no real point

But I always respond to the pig slaughter scams as a place to vent my frustration.

Harkins Theaters Awards Program

I just wanted a refill on popcorn to take home for someone else after the movie. The popcorn is $11 for ingredients that cost $0.30. That's always been the case, and I'm not complaining about that.

But to get the refill, now you have to join the

So I have to agree to let them data mine me and sell my info in order to get an additional scoop of something they're already making a massive profit off of.

A Couple Months Ago, I thought This Was A Glitch

...but now I realize, businesses like Hulu can pay businesses like Google to alter people's feeds to see promotions more than once. We live in a world with infinite content, but the pressing need is getting the new King of the Hill clips in front of new viewers repetitively.

This has been happening more and more in my feeds. It reminds me of early TV commercials, when you'd see them once or twice during a show, and they were almost integrated into the episode, and how they evolved into the cheaper reuse of a 30 second ad, which leads to seeing the same ad five or more times in a row on a streaming service in a single episode nowadays. The ramifications this has for political campaigns is just amazing.

Who knows, maybe we'll enshittify the internet to the point that peopl can't stand it anymore, and we'll have a mass revolution of touching grass.

(Also, apparently as long as it's a full clip of the show, it doesn't have to be labeled as "Sponsored")🤷

Just got on Grindr again, and it's gotten so much worse

Hey yall, I know it isn't news. Grindr sucks, it cultivates toxic behavior, too many ads yadda yadda yadda.

But I was in a relationship for a couple of years, and what I came back to is sooo much worse than I expected. The algorithmically powered "For You" section (that you have to pay to interact with) is removing the people you're most likely to interact with nearby from the main grid, and putting them into a separate section to make you pay for Xtra to access them... the entire point of Grindr is to find the people you're most likely to interact with nearby. So the app is now working directly against its own purpose??

The ads are getting majorly aggressive. If you tap or drag to get rid of them, it opens the app store or the browser to download whatever they were advertising. (Negative brand impact is real with these ads, btw. I'm viscerally opposed to downloading that King Shot freemium game, and I'm telling all my friends not to use Expedia ever again.) It's not even doing the main thing advertising is supposed to do: get people to buy a product. It's just increasing the number of click-throughs that the ads get, to improve the look of their metrics to shareholders.

Then there's EDGE... for $150 a month? Who the fuck is paying that? And the euphamisms like "give insights" and "curated profiles" just means they're pulling private data from the accounts of other people. The whole thing is basically made to allow full functionality to anyone that doesn't blink at spending $150 per month (read: sugar daddies.) Regular people should just get an escort at that point. It'll increase your chances, too.

This is proof of concept for what AI actually provides: optimized profits. Can we just skip to 3D printed silicone robot bussy, and drop the farce?
