Scent Spotlight: Checkmate

This week in the spotlight: Checkmate, from the Artisan Collection.

Where much of the line runs dark and brooding, Checkmate goes celebratory: sparkling champagne up top with tobacco underneath, landing somewhere between festive and grown-up. A fitting composition for the move that ends the game.

Like everything we craft, it is an extrait de parfum. Two sprays is all it takes, and it will still be with you when the game ends.

If Checkmate is in your collection, tell us how the champagne and tobacco wear on you. And name the piece we should put under the light next week.

Latest pickup: Mind Games Blockade and how it stacks up in my top 10

Okay, so I finally caved and picked up Blockade and it completely ruined my top 10.

It was love at first sniff, but I didn’t trust that yet because I’d only done paper and the cap. I sprayed it on skin too but my hands were already a mess of other samples from that day so my olfactory brain was definitely cluttered. But it definitely left a marked impression on me.

Bottle showed up and obviously it had to be my SOTD. That mango/bergamot/ginger opening is so juicy and vibrant, perfect for a summer morning. Got a solid four house of a gorgeous scent bubble, a pleasant skin scent the rest of the day. Dry down is sweet and woody, my favorite combo it kept me sniffing my wrist like an idiot.

At first I was like, “Okay, this is definitely top five.” But honestly, maybe it’s recency bias, I’m afraid it had gone straight to number one. That is saying a lot, because I love love love my number two.

Anyway, here’s my top 10, the ones I truly enjoy in my fragrance collection. These 10 do shuffle around quite a bit, so I think I’m just under the spell of new bottle syndrome.

Extrait de parfum, explained

Every fragrance we make is an extrait de parfum, and it changes how you wear it. A short guide.

Extrait is the most concentrated form of fragrance, with a higher ratio of perfume oil to alcohol than an EDP or EDT. More oil means three things on skin: it lasts longer, it sits closer, and it develops more slowly, revealing itself over hours rather than minutes.

The practical rules follow from that. Apply less than you would an EDP; two sprays is enough. Apply to skin rather than fabric, since the oils are made to warm against you. And give it time before judging; an extrait's opening is only the first move.

Questions about wearing extraits, ask below. This is the format we know best.

Where to start: the discovery sets

The question we hear most: with a full collection of extraits, where do you begin?

The discovery sets are the answer, and the smartest opening move. There is a 12 piece mini discovery set for the Artisan Collection and one for the Soulmate Collection, so you can explore a whole collection on skin before committing to a full bottle. For travel, there are 7.5 ml atomizer sets and trios built for the road.

And a detail worth knowing: every full size fragrance ships with a matching sample, so you can test before you ever break the seal on the bottle.

If you started with a discovery set, tell us which scent earned the full size. That story is the whole point of the format.

What scent instantly takes you back somewhere?

Is there a scent that instantly brings back a specific memory whenever you catch it? Maybe a relative's cologne, the sunscreen from one particular summer, or a perfume someone in your life used to wear. What is it, and where does it take you?

And do you actually wear it yourself, or is it one of those scents you'd rather just run into out in the world once in a while?

Find your family: the seven olfactive families, explained

Adapted from our journal, Notes from a Grand Master, written by our co-founder and Creative Director Mariana Shalbaf.

Perfumery sorts fragrances into olfactive families, and knowing them is the fastest way to find scents that fit you. The seven to know:

  • Floral: blooming flowers, from a single soliflore to a full bouquet. Rose, jasmine, tuberose, iris.
  • Amber: warm, sensual, opulent. Vanilla, incense, spices, musk.
  • Woody: the forest floor. Sandalwood, cedar, patchouli, vetiver.
  • Fresh: crisp and invigorating. Citrus, aromatics, marine notes, greens like tomato leaf.
  • Fougere: the classic aromatic structure. Lavender, oakmoss, coumarin, bergamot.
  • Chypre: bright citrus over a mossy, woody base. Named for Cyprus.
  • Gourmand: the patisserie in scent form. Vanilla, caramel, honey, praline.

Each week we will take one family, break down what defines it, and point to where it lives in our collection.

Which family do you reach for most, and which one have you never gotten along with?

Scent Spotlight: The Forward

This week in the spotlight: The Forward, from the Soulmate collection.

The pawn is the only piece that never retreats, and The Forward takes its name from that single rule of the game. The scent carries the same quiet resolve. It opens bright, pomelo, mandarin, and lemon, before an unexpected heart of salt, tonka bean, and jasmine sambac, then settles into sandalwood, cashmeran, and Madagascar vanilla. Somewhere between a day at the sea and the warmth that follows it.

Like everything we craft, it is an extrait de parfum. Two sprays is all it takes, and it will still be with you when the game ends.

If The Forward is in your collection, tell us how the salt and vanilla play on your skin. And name the piece we should put under the light next week.

What is your favorite niche note combination, and the one that does not exist yet?

What's your favorite niche note pairing? The one that looked wrong on paper, then you got it on skin and it just clicked. Coffee under a rose, sea salt in a floral, incense warming up something sweet, that kind of thing.

And on the flip side: what have you never seen done? If there's a pairing you'd love to see, or one nobody's quite pulled off yet, what would you hand a perfumer?

If someone names a combo you've smelled done well, drop the rec for them.
