The following selection comes from OUT Magazine:
This July, Doohan’s sure-to-be blood-spattered face will be seen in Evil Dead Burn — the sixth installment of the series, this time directed by Sébastien Vaniček (Infested). The film also stars Souheila Yacoub and Tandi Wright, and, from what the trailers indicate, it’s going to be a carnage-filled ride.
For Doohan, landing the role of Joseph in Evil Dead Burn was a dream come true, but it came with a slight dose of intimidation. Stepping onto an Evil Dead set required an immediate deep dive into 45 years of Deadite lore.
“I had seen Evil Dead, the Fede Álvarez one,” Doohan explains, referencing the 2013 film directed by the Uruguayan filmmaker. “And I had seen Evil Dead 2. My character Joseph, he’s researching the lore in the story, and so through that audition process, I went and watched it and watched all the movies all over again and checked out the show as well. I was running out of time — but I was all over the Wiki and learning everything I could about the Kandarian Dagger and everything I could get my hands on.”
The preparation paid off, but nothing could quite brace him for the twisted mayhem ahead. The producers of the franchise are known to take a devilish pride in ensuring their cast members earn their stripes through gallons of stage blood. One producer even felt the need to bluntly tell the cast about the torture they were about to endure.
“I remember when I first got to New Zealand, Rob Tapert, who’s produced them all, sat me down and — I think he did it with every cast member — and basically gave us a warning of how grueling these Evil Dead shoots are,” Doohan recalls with a grin. “He was like, ‘There will come a moment when you will have a breakdown,’ and I was like, I’m excited. I think it’s going to be good. But yeah, it was taxing, for sure, just physically and emotionally, because the way that this script unfolds is just, once shit hits the fan, it is relentless.”
>!In Evil Dead Burn, Doohan plays Joseph, a character with familial connective tissue to major players in the franchise’s mythology. Hardcore fans will surely home in on a certain family name that’s been around since the original.!<
>!“Joseph is working on a book about his grandfather’s research,” Doohan reveals. “His grandfather knew Professor Knowby. I loved how this script not only ties back a little bit to Evil Dead Rise — but this movie connects the lore through the whole franchise, which I found really exciting.”!<
The film, which centers on a family reunion (literally) from hell, is already being teased as the most vicious and savage entry in the series yet. For Doohan, the opportunity to engage with old-school, practical filmmaking was an exhilarating rite of passage.
“Just as a fan of horror, it’s exciting, and for it to be an Evil Dead movie. I was literally jumping up and down when I got the call,” he says. “It is gnarly. It is super gruesome. And the makeup and special effects team on this movie were just unbelievable. The Deadite makeup they did was insane. I’m really hoping that it comes across as gruesome as it was on the page and how it felt when we were filming.”
This intense baptism by blood binds Doohan to an elite Hollywood subculture. Past Evil Dead alumni have long described the franchise as a tight-knit fraternity, where the hazing ritual involves being blasted by blood cannons. It is a sentiment Doohan wholeheartedly confirms.
“I think that there probably is a real bonding thing for anyone that’s been in these, they know just how taxing all of that is. And it’s so fun. It’s cool to be a part of something where everyone’s so excited. There is that camaraderie that comes with it.”
His involvement in the franchise also recently scored him a visit to the set of the upcoming seventh installment, which will release in spring 2028. “I had a chance to actually visit the set of Evil Dead Wrath while they were shooting,” he shares. “It was cool just to go on set and just to be welcomed in, and they were like, ‘Oh, let me show you this,’ and everyone’s so excited, and they’re asking questions about Evil Dead Burn, and I was geeking out over what they were doing.”
The Evil Dead franchise is known for not holding back when it comes to gore, but it sounds as though the next installment may be the most gruesome yet, as Evil Dead Burn director Sébastien Vaniček says one scene was so violent, he had to cut it out.
"There is a scene that is not R-rated," Vaničekin said in the latest issue of SFX magazine (which has House of the Dragon season 3 on the cover). "It’s a really, really hard scene. And I have to cut it, unfortunately, so you just won’t experience it as brutally as it is right now because I need to have the R-rated movie. So we are trying to find a good balance."
At the time of the interview, Vaniček was in the middle of getting the movie rated by the Motion Picture Association. The goal was to achieve an R rating in the US (which equates to a 15 or 18 age rating in the UK), in line with the rest of the franchise.
Vaniček didn't give any clues on what the scene entailed, but if it was too much for an R-rating, we can only imagine the level of gore. Evil Dead Rise contained a scene where a possessed victim grated their face with a cheese grater, and the 2013 Evil Dead remake showed a girl cutting her own arm off with an electric carving knife. Still, both movies managed to earn an R-rating in the US and an 18 rating in the UK. So, the cut Evil Dead Burn scene must have been extremely graphic.
Evil Dead Burn follows a grieving woman who has recently lost her husband, and in search of comfort, visits her in-laws at their secluded family home. However, the family reunion soon turns into the trip from hell as the Book of the Dead transforms them into Deadites one by one. Evil Dead Burn does not act as a sequel to Evil Dead Rise, but the first trailer did contain a cheeky nod to the 2023 movie.
However, fans of gore may still be able to see the cut scene one day, as Vaniček is already thinking about releasing Director's Cut later down the line. "The director’s cut will be way more violent than what we will have in the theater," said the director, who promised that the movie heading to theaters will still have its fair share of carnage.
There seems to be some conflicting information out there that I would like a little clarification on. Over the years, I've seen many comments from people outside of the United States who state that they vividly remember seeing the "apocalyptic" ending of Army of Darkness... on home video (which led to serious confusion when Ash vs Evil Dead came out about what happened to Ash). HOWEVER, I've also seen comments saying that the S-Mart ending was included in the theatrical international run, and that it only became the apocalyptic one on home video.
IF YOU SAW AOD IN IT'S ORIGINAL THEATRICAL RUN OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA, WHICH ENDING DO YOU RECALL SEEING IN THE THEATER?

This is sort of a companion piece to my complete Vampirella reading order. When I was assembling that list, I was severely disappointed that I could not find a complete online listing of what was and was not collected in Dynamite's Vampirella: Master Series paperback collections. So for any of you who have that same problem, this one is for you.
NOTE: Names in parentheses and quotes ("Example") indicate one select story from an anthology issue containing more than one story.

WARREN PUBLISHING (1969-1983)
From my understanding, all Vampirella centric stories in the original magazine are in chronological order. This material is reprinted in Dynamite's Vampirella Archives series.
It should be noted that there is an issue #113, though it purely consists of reprinted stories.
HARRIS PUBLICATIONS Primary Timeline (1991-2006)
A decent (but not complete) chunk of the Harris material is reprinted in Dynamite's Vampirella: Master Series collections. For a list of what is collected in the Master Series, click here.
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT Primary Timeline (2014-Present)
This timeline continues from the Harris primary timeline.
DYNAMITE'S EARTH-818793 CONTINUITY
Vampirella (Volume 1) #32 states that the events of the original Warren magazine took place 10 years prior to the events of that issue. Connecting the Warren era to the Earth-818793 continuity creates a lot of problems, so it would be best to assume that the very broad strokes of some of the Warren stories happened, though not exactly as they were presented in the original magazine. As far as I can tell, this timeline ignores the Harris era.
DYNAMITE'S MODERN VENGEANCE TIMELINE
The 2019 Vengeance of Vampirella is an alternate universe which follows the Harris continuity up to Vampirella: Death & Destruction, ignoring any series which followed that in the Harris era. This continuity also ignores the Harris-published Vampirella vs. Hemorrhage series.
VAMPIVERSE
LEGENDERRY STEAMPUNK
ORIGINAL DIE!NAMITE UNIVERSE
THE SUPERPOWERS/DARK POWERS UNIVERSE
HACK/SLASH CROSSOVER UNIVERSE
SELF-CONTAINED
These titles are not connected to any previous timeline, and could be read independently.
HARRIS/TOP COW CROSSOVER UNIVERSE
As far as I can tell, these crossovers were not acknowledged in any Vampirella books outside of themselves, making it a self-contained continuity. Not sure how they fit into the grander Top Cow books.
