how much 1x1 ft stone is worth anyone's time?

cleaning basement, and have a few old (from bathrooms that were removed even before I got here) tile overages, each three-four boxes. Nobody in the universe that I'm likely to find would ever want this, yea? there's nothing but landfill for it?

what can I expect if I go get tacos at Cosa Sabrosa inside Zal Gaz Grotto on Tuesday when there is a jazz band playing?

I've never ventured here. WCBN includes events there in their events announcements.

it's a mason hall?

tacos and a bit of music (5-7 Tuesday and Sunday) seems like a do-able thing with my kids. are kids even allowed? there are tables for eating; can you hear music there? will it be super loud?

who do I call to clarify where a septic field is?

anyone ever have to do this? 1980s house. I really thought it was one place but someone said it seemed it would be another place.

it's mostly the figuring of where woody plants can be allowed to grow.

It doesn't seem within what a septic hauling company does. Is it sewer scopers?

dumbfounded this anteater doesn't care about ants

Annalisa showed up so of course I thought, oh she needs an ant, gave her one (source: perpetually rotting turnip turned ant making machine) and she treated it like an old boot, barely acknowledged it, and no return gift. What a weirdo.

seeking secure laptop destruction

I'm looking for a place I can bring a few computers for safe destruction and recycling

searching the internet brings all kinds of sketchy things, like mail in services, and back of small shop type operations.

are there any working bubble hockey games in town?

I saw Pinball Pete's has one that was not working (infuriatingly, it was still on and taking money, but several pieces are clearly non functioning) and got the itch to play.

alternatively, which establishments should consider getting one?

how aggressive is bouteloua dactyloides (buffalo grass) against mixed plantings?

I've seen quite a few "nice looking" installations of this grass as a total coverage planting, with no other plants. Unlike other north American bouteloua, it sends out runners that root, so it can effectively form a lawn, so long as foot traffic is relatively low.

Can it easily move into mixed plantings? That is, can it take the shade and competition, and just start bouncing around and get annoying?

Similarly, can it be planted with cool season grasses, with which it can take turns growing? or will it crowd too aggressively?

location: Michigan (where it is slightly out of range; I can get plant stock from Minnesota)

should I cut back my juicy fresh plugs before planting to avoid them being pulled by deer?

Everything I'm planting can exist with deer, but I know they sometimes nibble even grasses, allium, milkweed, and mountain mints, and these are all super plump, full leaves, so I think every deer needs to check if they're good or not.

If I cut them back hard will I excite root development and maybe get them to put up more shoots to be slowly nibbled?

In past I've often had things pulled, but not really eaten.

I've also considered pinning down w chopsticks or twigs.

am watering them all season

escrow account for awful construction situation

We have a 2.5 year old construction contract (for a six-month project 🙄), with a company who rrrrrreally messed up (ordered and installed wrong siding, among other things). We have outstanding invoices, but the unmitigated damages they caused likely exceed what I owe them.

At my last contact with them, they suggested I pay the invoices before they begin to move forward with cleaning up their own mess. I've asked for a copy of their certificate of insurance, with no response, and when I brought the company up with another company, that guy said "oh they're still in business?" which doesn't inspire me to send them money while my house is a them-caused disaster. I sent them a detailed report of known issues, and separate full home inspection report; that the nearly-retired inspector said "I've never seen anything this bad." They didn't respond to either report.

Unfortunately the siding work that has to be completed is tricky -- the siding material is usually used in commercial building, and regular siding companies won't touch it, let alone come in and try to fix this company's work.

Someone brought up the idea of me sending money to an escrow account, with payment released as certain metrics are completed.

How would I initiate that? What would I ask for, and who could set it up and enforce it?

Note this is an insurance situation, and the insurance company didn't have anything helpful to say.

anyone need a (free) twin bed?

edit: pending

we have an incredibly basic ("from Wayfair or something") twin bed, with a mattress, that i'd like to get to someone who could use it. We used it for a kid a few years.

The headrail can be attached (bolts are there) or left off.

I have a truck and can deliver it anywhere around campus, as soon as today, (at no cost)

sheets and pillows not included

Summer pollinator magnet by mailbox [facepalm]

it's easy to see opportunity in a planting around a mailbox. The dream is taking it from a sore thumb bare post to something levitating on top of a gentle mound of flowers

a few years later, the rattlesnake master and mountain mint are in bloom, with SO many great black wasps and other fine hymenoptera exactly right where the mail lady opens her window.

I'm working to move things now, hopefully moving them a few meters away gives the immediate area some breathing room.

Fortunately there are other good plants for the site, including earlier-blooming pollinators, which bring a less intimidating crowd.

partial partition sink

I had never encountered this sink style until yesterday.

I see a lot of upsides, specifically being able to wash the baking sheets I use almost every time I cook

I can also see the possibility of sometimes wishing it wasn't there, including what I see as the inevitable accident with hitting dishes against it.

My own inclination has always been to single basin sinks, and then pull in a wash tub as needed

those who have lived with them: how has your experience been? anyone consider, but choose otherwise?

does oak no-cut window include stump grinding?

hello is it recommended to wait til late Fall to grind an oak stump for blight control?

The whole tree fell last year (root failure); they cut and removed the main mass but left the torn up and upturned stump.

big transformer in Kerrytown

this corner (Fifth Ave and Detroit St) has had bad feng shui forever, but this 2 meter block of electronics brings the vibes up a whole level. The "no touch/hot surface" seems particularly unlikely to be followed as it looks innately climbable and across from a high school.

houttuynia cordata

it's my sixth year with this beast which was intentionally planted by the previous owner. At first it was in sprayable masses, but now it's in the context of a mixed planting so today I'm snipping individual stems and dabbing with triclopyr.

Also the smell of this plant makes me want to vomit.

my first time looking at renderings

Hello we have a bathroom project and just got these renderings. I mostly turned the design over to the other parties here, but I really dig what they came up with. I'd love some corroboration that we're not insane to think this looks great and we should proceed, or suggestions for changes

One thing I see that I think I might change is that the step into the shower could maybe have a stone top instead of tile. Also we're planning a legged vanity not to the floor cabinets.

Note we could not come up with any alternate layouts to this, largely due to the skylights and windows; this is the shape we're working with. House is 70s white block with kinda Bauhaus sensibilities.

one strap and a bunch of loose wood 👍

a three foot long 4x4 flew off before my very eyes. I flagged him down with the classic honk and point at the trailer move. His expression told me he knew.
