Argentina/Brazil itinerary feedback/suggestions please

Hi everyone

My husband and I both have our 50th birthdays and 20th anniversary together next year and are planning a landmark trip. I’d love some feedback on it from those who’ve done similar before. We have three weeks. It’s from 20th March to 10th April.

We will fly from London to Ushuaia on a 28hr flight with a break in Madrid and another in Buenos Aires. Planning five nights in Ushuaia to recuperate from the journey, take a boat trip on the Beagle Channel, visit the Martial Glacier and a little hiking in Tierra del Fuego national park.

Then a flight with quite a long layover to Mendoza, first night in a hotel in town then two nights on a finca/estancia and a final two nights in town. Plan is to visit a few wineries, see the city and to relax a little, drink some wine and eat some steak.

From there, a quick flight to Buenos Aires. We have six nights (though we might spend one across the river in Colonia de Sacramento), so plan is to stay in Recoleta, spend some time exploring the city and hopefully a Huracan match at El Palacio.

After this, we’ll fly BA to Iguazu (Argentine side) then immediately take a taxi to the Brazilian side to stay near the airport. Three nights here to have a full day each for the Brazilian side and another for the Argentinian side. Flying home via São Paulo is loads easier and quicker and cheaper than staying on the Argentinian side of the border.

We are mid budget travellers and will pretty much be doing this one bag to avoid lengthy baggage pick up; will rent big coats in Ushuaia so we don’t have to cart them around the country. The additional cost of check in bags which I’ve learned to live without would add £500 to the cost of the tickets…. And looks like we can hire or buy and then thrift what we might need locally.

We love - in no particular order - wine and steak, football, big mountains, glacier views, wildlife and birdwatching, keen to get to see some tango, mostly quieter wilderness places but some city fine too. Does this sound like a reasonable plan? It takes account of travel time between places and the odd recovery day plus a day and a half of recovery from travel before getting back to work (only task will be to pick up dog from kennels 15 miles away).

Should I trim paws and if so, why?

So my flattie has very furry paws. She doesn’t have any signs of trouble, so I’m reluctant to change things. Is there a reason why I should? I’m tempted to leave her alone unless it’s making her unwell or sad and it isn’t to date. I also don’t trim but do brush her ears and feathers.

What size needles for self administration

I’ve had my first loading schedule (UK, NHS) and have been approved for a couple more but whilst having some improvement, am concerned about delays in additional loading courses. I’ve ordered some of the German suggested B12 ampoules as per the guide. I still have fairly major neuro issues (waiting for MRI to rule out other issues as I was atypical but urgent bloods showed B12 at lower than 148). Ferritin is high (around 350). Have started multivitamin and methyl B complex for cofactors along with bio available magnesium and potassium.

What size needles do I need and what injection sites can I consider? I will obviously not inject myself outside of lapses between loading courses, just want to understand how to best take it.

For science, my Mum’s Mum and Dad’s Dad both had PA. I’m expecting my blood test for that in early July and am deeply happy my GP did urgent bloods and figured out the deficiency and at least started me back on the path to sorting myself out - just hoping for advice on needle size here.

Just been diagnosed by blood test

And my injections start tomorrow along with testing for pernicious anaemia (one grandparent on each side had it). I’m reading all the posts, have also been referred for MRI (UK NHS) to rule out anything else due to nature of symptom development.

I feel pretty awful. Foot dropping, severe pins and needles all the time in hands and lower arms and feet all the way up calves, vision blurriness, low mood and nausea/vomiting including virtually every time I brush my teeth.

Any hints/tips/tricks to help speed recovery and any ideas on how long it will take to start feeling better?

Epic Sunday roast - SE London

Fairly epic roast today at the Lawrence Arms in Crofton Park. The beef wasn’t as hot as I’d have liked but the sides and gravy were (and we got extra gravy on request). Beef cooked to perfection besides temp - pink, flavourful and delicious.

Horseradish was homemade and delicious - the red cabbage was excellent as were the roast potatoes and baby carrots. Yorkshires perfect mix of crispy and soggy (and is the reason I don’t recommend the Royal Albert in Deptford where the roast is otherwise excellent in every other way - but shite overcooked yorkies). £23 per head which feels reasonable.

Skip the house made Bloody Mary - one of the few cocktails on the menu not worth it - but the margs are great and there’s a good selection of cask and keg. House wine pretty good too.

Anniversary suggestions

My husband and I celebrate 18 years together next Friday and we both have the day off.

Any suggestions for a great spot for either afternoon tea (preferably with bottomless bubbles) or decent but not fancy American diner food for a late lunch?

How it went - update

Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice. Time, playing around with colour corrector, arnica and calendula cream and Savlon all were able to give me the look I finally achieved today. This was a couple of hours before I went into my interview.

The recruiter had actually warned the panel, as suggested I made a joke of it to start with, and they really warmed up. The interview ran over by 15 minutes and I managed to get my points across in a concise way, and even made them laugh a few times.

If I do get the job, I’ll come back again to say thanks again.

The people who recommended ELF Green corrector - you are all life savers. Along with accelerating the healing as best I could, this really did make a massive difference along with some excellent application advice.

Appreciate you all!

Help me!

My dog pulled me over running after a fox at home in London last week. I’m healing well but I have a massive job interview next week.

How can I best disguise my injuries? The abrasions on my forehead and around my eye socket are coverable, but the philtrum scratches feel very deep.

I get a lot of matches in the US and have these two journeys.

There is some evidence in the family tree of several ancestors moving to the US, South Africa and Australia. The only logical reason I can think of is that their children remigrated back to the UK as I am 93% British and Irish with smaller amounts of Austrian, Jewish and Russian (from a known Austrian GGP).

Any other suggestions?

I got my updated results which now much more closely resemble the extensive genealogy our family has done. I am very English - no surprise there but the trace Russian is new (and valid at 90% confidence). My great grandfather is Austrian but all the others are British. I also got a migration match to Mayflower descendants which also tracks as quite a few of my relatives are buried in the US.

So I was in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma for a couple of weeks on a roadtrip.

Temperatures ranged from 90/32 degrees up in Austin down to 37/3 in Missouri. Plus unexpected and powerful aircon meant we needed to be easy with massive changes in temps,

I wasn’t entirely one bagging as this was an RV trip, but the clothes I took fit into an 8ltr compression bag so I think it still counts - the rest of our baggage allowance was stuff like fairy lights and cleaning sponges (so mods please delete it this doesn’t quite fit the sub rules).

Clothes and toiletries I took for 16 days:

2 x Uniqlo cotton trainer socks

2 x Darn Tough Vermont merino socks

3 x Lapasa travel pants (knickers)

1 x Wool& Summit leggings in black long

2 x Wool& Maggie in Marine Blue and Purple Fig

1 x Wool& Willow in Olive Green

1 x Julahas cotton fusion in Plum

1 x long line warm cardie in wool poly mix

1 x bamboo bra from Body and Bra

1 x tiny pair of bamboo shortie pyjamas

1 x Toggs swim suit

3 x Snag chub rub shorts (actually an Amazon dupe and I don’t love them - need to try out the Snug originals or the Wool& Roam shorts which aim to do the same thing - these not made of natural material)

1 x pair Blundstones

1 x pair Merrell travel runners

1 x Subu insulated slippers

1 x Havaianas flip flops

Small travel pouch with

1 x Mitchum 3 day deodorant (and yes it did stain my wool but I’ll go back to natural at home)

HRT stuff and a couple other prescriptions

Le Roche Posay moisturiser and face sunscreen (actually not a fan of this and going back to Olay when home, it sits really heavily on the skin)

Muji travel bottles of Aussie shampoo, conditioner, Original Source shower gel, decanted Sensodyne, and a small make up bag with mascara and all in one foundation, plus a larger (100ml) Muji bottle of wool wash.

Without the camping stuff, this would have easily fit into an 8ltr bag, wearing heavier things in the plane.

What worked great - the merino wool dresses which could be doubled up with other layers in super cold weather we hadn’t expected, and worked amazingly well even with leggings in very hot weather.

I’m a convert to merino - I’ve now tried on hot and humid holidays and varied weather extended trips and it’s just great for both.

I’ve not been paid for this post or offered credit - I see so much unregulated content on here which isn’t appropriately described - and wanted to give an unvarnished view of what I’d tried.
