Gabriela Torabi

Where does she go from here? Sinatra is gone; Jane is gone (we think). Where does Torabi's story go from here? I can't believe this writing team would go the soap opera route of having her be pregnant with Xavier's baby. I don't see her becoming the next "leader". I think this has become a leaderless society. If anyone is going to be in charge, it will be Xavier and Link. Maybe Torabi will help with transitioning people from bunker life to outside life. That will not be easy for many of them.

Brennan's Cystic Fibrosis Expert

When Russ's girlfriend Amy comes to see Brennan and tells Brennan about her daughter with Cystic Fibrosis, Brennan gives her the name of Dr. Leo Getz, an expert in Cystic Fibrosis. Leo Getz is the name of Joe Pesci's character in the Lethal Weapon movies. 😊

Jack's Proposal To Rebecca

Jack is re-creating the carnival date. Miguel comes in and says "I got everything. Hot chocolate, candy apples, corn syrup." What was the corn syrup for?

Do You Think Rebecca Had Food Issues Too?

Obviously, Rebecca's mother Janet instilled some very unhealthy body images in Rebecca. Advising her to starve herself before her wedding, serving her a ridiculously small piece of pie at Thanksgiving and the "we have to watch ourselves Rebecca" line. Also, any woman who has ever struggled with weight bristled at Rebecca's line to Jack "no ice cream for me or you won't be able to pick me up anymore". Impossibly thin women who say things like that annoy me.
I also think that Kate had a valid point in the argument between her and Rebecca at Kate's first gig. Kate told her mother "you wanted me to become the you that you never became". I think that shows Kate felt disappointment from her mother about her weight.

The Big Fight

Team Jack or Team Rebecca? I realize they both had their part in how things led up to this point. But if I had to side with anyone, I side with Jack. Earlier in the episode, Rebecca says to Ben, "I look like a mom playing dress up" and she did. I have been in the music business. Female lead vocalists in pub bar bands do not wear full length sequin gowns and feathers in their hair. And I agree with Jack's comment that she was a 40-year-old woman singing covers in pubs. That is not a career, that is ridiculous. Rebecca went to Los Angeles and was told she was "Pittsburgh good." She then decided to become a stay-at-home Mom. Being a stay-at-home mother of triplets IS a career and she wasn't done with it yet. She made the choice to opt for motherhood instead of continuing to pursue a singing career. There are other things Rebecca could have done with her love of music that would have fit in with her life as a mother of three teenagers.

The Scene Between Billy And The Bartender

About an expensive liquor is very similar to the scene between Dr. Loge and Sinatra about an expensive liquor. I don't know if that means anything, but I noticed it on a rewatch.

Did Any Of The Scenes In The First Episode

Seem strange to you? I thought the opening sequence was odd. As you face the bed (from the foot of the bed) Xavier is on the left side of the bed. He reaches out and strokes the pillow next to him. And yet, as we find out later, Teri had never slept next to him in that bed. Okay, maybe it was a "before the bunker" memory he was having. Then, in the next scene, Xavier is taking a drink from a glass of water that is on the right side of the bed, as you face the bed (from the foot of the bed). Okay, that was likely just bad editing. When Xavier goes to talk to Mike about the film footage of the day in question, Mike says, "That dude has said four words to me since we got down here." First big clue about the bunker situation. Did you notice anything in Episode 1 that seemed off?

Technically, Kevin and Kate Are Not "Twins"

They are surviving triplets. I always wondered why the show made so many references to them being "twins" when technically they aren't.

Least Favorite Scenes and Episodes

When I do a re-watch of this series, I often think that certain scenes and episodes were weaker than others and could have been replaced by others. I love Milo and I can see why they wanted to devote a whole episode to Jack, but the episode about his mother dying seemed out of place. It was weird that Nicky was not addressed in the flashbacks. Okay, maybe Nicky was a baby at that point. But since there was no mention of him, or scenes of a baby crib or something, that episode felt like Nicky didn't exist. Maybe they originally intended to include that episode before we knew about Nicky and it got moved to a later season.
The flashback scenes to Rebecca getting her hair cut seemed out of place and like they didn't really serve a purpose. However, I did get a good laugh out of young Kate's line, "Mommy is upset because she looks like He-Man". Were there any scenes or episodes that you thought were weaker than others?

The Very Last Scene Of The Series

I have always found it an odd creative choice to make the very last scene of the very last episode, Jack looking at Randall. This show was not about Jack or Randall or their relationship. This show was about the whole family, and how each of them developed, changed, and dealt with their challenges. It was about the people they brought into the family.
I would have thought the last scene would have been Jack and Rebecca looking at all three of the kids.

Worst Case Scenario

These scenes always made me laugh. Especially the last one where Beth says that Randall buys an RV and travels from parent grave, to parent grave and ends up in Puerto Rico swimming with Miguel's dead mother.

Things About This Show That Didn't Make Sense

There were a couple of things about this show that have never made sense to me. One was Randall's nasty voicemail to Beth. Yeah, I get he was angry. However, Beth and Randall had been angry with each other before and he never spoke to her in such a shitty way.
Another thing that never made sense to me was Jack's refusal to make things right with his only brother. That was very "un-Jack" of him. I have rewatched the whole series several times and these two things always feel out of context for the characters. Anyone else have any things that didn't make sense for them?

Kate and Toby

This is not a Kate hate post. I love Chrissy Metz and I loved the character of Kate. I only wish that the writers had developed the character of Kate beyond her weight issues. An argument can be made that they did that at the end of season 6, but for me, that was too little too late. And honestly, I hated Kate and Phillip and found that relationship beyond unbelievable. Kate's relationship with Toby was one of my favorites on the show. But it always bothered me that while I believed that Kate loved Toby, she was often jealous of him. And that is not a healthy way to love someone. One of the worst Kate and Toby scenes for me was when she suggested that Toby keep his fat pants. Truth be told, I don't think Toby would still have those fat pants around, but there were a lot of writing flaws in this show. And Kate wanting him to keep them showed that she secretly hoped he would get fat again because she wasn't truly happy that her husband had gotten healthy. The other tough Kate and Toby scene was when Kate said she had been imagining "old Toby" and Toby lost it and said that she fell in love with a coping mechanism. Toby found a way to get beyond his weight and depression issues. And yes, I know that his doing that stemmed from his wanting to escape his sad feelings about his baby son being blind. But those sad feelings deserved to be recognized and he wasn't getting that from Kate. So instead of doing something destructive, he burned them off in the gym. I don't know why Toby keeps getting slammed here for that. I will always believe that the writers could have taken a different direction with Kate and Toby's story and kept them together. It makes me sad that most of the other couples in this show got a happy ending. Jack and Rebecca, Beth and Randall, Kevin and Sophie, Malik and Deja. But Kate and Toby didn't make it just because Fogelman was so obsessed with including a tear-jerker divorce in his drama-fest.

One Of The Best Scenes In The Show

I know there are a lot of what people consider "best scenes" but my favorite is when Randall finds out he is having a grandson. It is such a "Sterling moment" and I am a total sucker for those. What are your favorite scenes?

Chrissy Metz's Voice

Chrissy Metz's voice did not get a fair shake on this show. Metz has a beautiful voice and her version of "Landslide" is my favorite. There should have been less Mandy Moore and more Chrissy Metz when it came to the singing scenes. Metz has the better voice.

About Season 5

The only way they can write a Maggie/Cal wedding is if they elope. There is no way they can pull off a believable big wedding without Sully there. And since it currently looks like Patterson is not returning, I think the only way to write a believable wedding is if Maggie and Cal elope. I would say that they put their wedding plans on hold due to the Ben/Tracy situation, but I really hope they drop that storyline like a hot potato. Season 5/Episode 1: Aunt Someone comes to Sullivan's Crossing and takes Ben and Tracy home with her to a faraway province. We never hear about them again. All fans stand and cheer.

Edna's Earrings

They are like Maggie's forehead. They keep getting bigger and bigger. I appreciate the Native American jewelry, but I wonder how big those earrings will be next season.
