Why doesn’t child and adolescent psychiatry do a better job of apprising kids/adolescents of sexual side effects?

Research demonstrates that psychiatrists inform adults about sexual side effects of SSRIs much more frequently than they inform children and adolescents. If anything, I would think children and adolescents deserve more monitoring and information about these side effects, because at least adults have an established sexual baseline, whereas children and adolescents may not. Is this disparity due to a paternalistic-beneficence dynamic within child psychiatry, or due to the awkwardness of discussing sex with children and adolescents?

How are sexual side effects monitored when prescribing antidepressants in children going through puberty?

I am curious if there is a method to monitor these as a child would not know what is normal. Do you take them off after puberty and ask them if they have any difference in libido, genital numbness, etc.?

Are you able to mask anhedonia/cognitive dysfunction from friends and family?

If you try to “Fake it until you make it” do you have any advice?

I find this to be incredibly difficult.

For those in relationships, do you try to ensure your significant other does not use cosmetics with endocrine disruptors to prevent secondary contact?

I am wondering if this is something others do or if it is not necessary.

I’m still in disbelief I made it out of this hellscape for 5 years and was thrown right back into it and could use some words of encouragement

So I had a very severe condition for a year but recovered to where I could live a good life. Sleep and emotions were at 80-90% and sexually I was at 50-60% and I honestly didn’t think about the condition much. For the past 5 years I have lived the cleanest lifestyle possible to avoid crashing again. I move in with my partner and within 6 months starting a month ago I crash again hard with anhedonia, insomnia, dry nose, shrunken genitals, dry/numb skin, hair texture changed, etc. I am 95% sure it was due to repeated secondary exposure through kissing to a chap stick and/or lip mask she used with endocrine disruptors. I recall vividly tasting/feeling the products after she applied them so I know I was def being exposed in at least some small quantities.

I’m just in such disbelief and frustrated because I literally followed the PFS/PSSD playbook of not to ingest or expose yourself to further anti-androgens but how are you suppose to account for secondary exposure through kissing. And now my relationship is on the rocks. But yeah any advice or words of encouragement would be appreciated.

Is it possible to have a delayed secondary crash from another substance?

If you are exposed to a substance for 5 months and don’t crash until month 6 does that make any sense?

If I was feeling progressively worse for a little over a month and then enter a crash do you think this is due to an acute exposure to a substance or sustained?

I’m curious what you think about this crash pattern.

Has anyone with bizarre physical symptoms (dry nose, skin, thin skin, increased body hair) recovered emotions/anhedonia and sleep?

I am curious if people with these physical symptoms at least recovered emotions

Looking for some hope and words of encouragement

So I had very severe PSSD for 1-1.5 yrs and at first was taking diff supplements and benzos for sleep. I slowly recovered through time after stopping all supplements to where I was at a functioning baseline for 4.5-5 years (60% of pre-PSSD baseline) where most days I didn’t think about PSSD.

Recently in the past 2 weeks I have crashed hard again with anhedonia, insomnia, and a worsening in some physical symptoms. I believe it was due to a lip skincare mask that my partner was using for months that would also get on me when we would kiss at night. I am trying to remain positive and have firsthand seen the power of time in healing. I would appreciate any words of support and encouragement. I’m just frustrated because I intentionally lived my life so cleanly these past 5 yrs to protect my baseline but still crashed.

For those that live with their significant other do you try to ensure their cosmetic products don’t contain anti-androgens to prevent secondary exposure?

I’m just curious if other ppl do this with their significant others or if it is likely unnecessary.

Is it fair to blame parents for long-term medication side effects?

So I was put on SSRIs at 11 for anxiety and on them for a while. Anyways I moved out of the house to go to college and finally realized they were causing s*xual side effects and quit. I would have quit much sooner if I realized earlier. Anyways, I moved back home during the pandemic my anxiety increased and I was essentially forced to take the SSRIs or find alternative living arrangements even though I told my parents I didn’t want to take the drug anymore due to s*xual side effects. They said it didn’t matter because I wasn’t having s*x. Anyways I ended up with a condition called PSSD where the side effects last for years after quitting.

This has cause a strained relationship with my parents because I blame them. First of all I shouldn’t have been on an SSRI at 11 and if so I should have been told about s*xual side effects and secondly once I said I was done with the drugs that should have been respected.

Figured out I crashed from an overnight lip mask my partner used with pomegranate juice

Just as an FYI for months she was using this lip mask and when we kiss I would be directly exposed. Really hoping I can recover but not optimistic.
