My MIL keeps commenting on my weight and I can't stand it anymore.

I have a hip injury that will eventually require surgery. My doctor wants me to be mindful about food intake- he's very good, very positive doctor who understands the nuances of weight gain. Long story short, I went through a period of severe illness, gained a bunch of weight, and am now facing something like this surgery in my near to distant future.

I recently discovered one of the more filling snacks for me is a thin slice of pound cake from a local bakery paired with a big helping of strawberries. It leaves me feeling full and good, the fiber and water in the strawberries is great. I try to eat intuitively.

I am bringing my MIL into the city for a medical appointment tomorrow and mentioned wanted to stop at the bakery to get more pound cake. She immediately says, "aren't you supposed to be watching what you eat? For your surgery?" (She has a LONG history of doing stuff like this but my god....we're back).

I looked at my husband (praying at this point he was going to say something because he knows I think her constant comments on what I eat is hurtful) and said "I'm not going to answer that". He makes a joke, pushing what she said on himself. She digs in and goes, "no, I'm talking about (me)".

I'm afraid to tell her to knock it off because she gets extremely agitated at the drop of the hat. Husband isn't very close with her and didn't grow up with her. She needed help and we moved her to be closer to us. I'm happy to help. I don't dislike her. And I know what people think about me, a fat person, daring to eat food. But for the love of god, I just want to enjoy those fucking strawberries and pound cake in peace.

Just screaming into the void. I'm bad at setting boundaries with people like her, so I'll probably just suffer in silence until I blow up on her one day. But how anyone thinks the level of commenting on my weight that she does is okay is beyond me.

Second opinion today, doctor suspects torn labrum and MRI shows moderate cartilage wearing. Hip replacement inevitable :(

I'm 37. BMI of 42. He wants me to get down to a BMI of 35 for hip replacement surgery. I can't walk more than a few feet comfortably.

Just...digesting all of this.

Was anyone else told their pain wasn’t from their hip?

My doctor told me my symptoms weren’t caused by my hip. The MRI showed “Mild-to-moderate right hip osteoarthritis as detailed above. There is fraying and degeneration of the right acetabular labrum without discrete tear. There is physiologic joint fluid. There is femoral morphology which could predispose the patient to cam-type femoroacetabular impingement.”

I am going on my third month of not being able to walk without significant pain. I get this sharp barbed wire feeling running down my inner thigh, pain into my abdomen (mild obviously referred), and a pinching feeling in my groin.

I see a hip preservation specialist for a second opinion on the 27th. My current doctor wanted to inject my psoas muscle with steroids but I just feel like this is 100% my hip. He was even convinced it was my back at first until my lumbar MRI showed that my back was fine :/

Elevator Closing Down For Move In / Move Out

I might be TA here, and I'm open to hearing that I am, but my apartment complex does something that drives me absolutely insane.

We are in a long building that is two units across and 11 units long (5 floors total) plus the amenities in the middle. There are two elevators- one in the middle of the building and one on the end. So it's a bit of a walk getting to and from the elevator if you are on an end unit that isn't near the elevator.

We moved into a unit that is on the far end from the middle elevator / other side of the building from the end elevator, not realizing that the building closes the middle elevator down every few days for move in / move out. Usually for several hours, usually with zero notice.

Ordinarily I just deal with it- it's annoying at worst. But lately I'm injured and using crutches to get around. The elevator being closed down means I have to walk to the other end of the building then all the way back along the building to get to my car.

When I called to ask the leasing office about this, they said there was nothing they could do and that move ins / outs are unpredictable because it depends on when the moving truck shows up.

It seems crazy to me that for several hours a day, every few days, the entire building is reduced to one elevator just because one person needs to move their stuff in. With zero accommodations for people who need the closer elevator.

Hopefully I explained this well- am I being unreasonable here? At the very least I would love for them to tell me WHEN the elevator might be closed so I can plan ahead. I'm willing to leave the apartment early so I can ride the elevator down and hang out into my car for a bit if I have somewhere to be that day.

Sharp, stabbing, electrical shock pain down the inner thigh?

This symptom was very confusing to my doctor. At its worst, I had/have sharp, stabbing electrical shock type pain down my inner thigh. I also experience my inner thigh getting hot if I move too much.

MRI showed that I could have / am predisposed to cam type impingement, labral fraying, and moderate to high grade of cartilage wear.

Right now if I don't do anything but lay around the house, I'm fine. Sitting hurts after 20 or so minutes. Walking is brutal- I have to take lots of breaks, walk slowly, and walk bow legged on my right hip to get anywhere without pain. Any more than that flares it up again.

Did anyone else have a similar experience?

Cartilage thinning

I’m seeing some not so great things about cartilage thinning.

Is having a “moderate to high” grade of chondral thinning really bad?

MRI Results Today

The summary from the MRI report:

”Mild-to-moderate right hip osteoarthritis as detailed above. There is fraying and degeneration of the right acetabular labrum without discrete tear. There is physiologic joint fluid. There is femoral morphology which could predispose the patient to cam-type”

I am a full-time dog walker so this has been a really big hit for me. I have been on limited mobility for four weeks because any walking causes a sharp zapping / stabbing feeling in my leg- though that has been improving with rest, I still go backwards very easily.

Would anyone be willing to weigh in on what these MRI results might realistically mean for me?

Detailed Report:

There is diminished offset at the anterolateral aspects of the femoral head and neck junction; a morphology which could predispose the patient to cam-type femoroacetabular impingement. There is associated subcortical cystic change at the anterolateral aspects of the right femoral head/neck junction. The right femoral alpha angle is 59 degrees. There is mild fraying and degeneration of the right acetabular labrum circumferentially without discrete tear. There is moderate to high-grade chondral thinning at the superomedial/inferomedial right hip joint. There is physiologic joint fluid. The right hip capsuloligamentous stabilizers are normal.

Unable to walk without pain

Hi hi- I have an MRI tomorrow morning for lumbar spine and hip, but wanted to ask here if anyone had a labral tear that affected them most with any activity.

Right now the only reliably comfortable position is laying down on my back. Side can hurt, sitting up hurts, and standing / walking is very uncomfortable after a few minutes.

My symptom is an electric / sharp stabbing pain that travels down my inner thigh with activity, very reliably triggered by activity.

Physical therapist was thinking it was a groin strain until he evaluated me, then said a torn labrum is a possibility and said it would be a big one if it is a torn labrum :(

Did anyone just have that electric shooting thigh pain? As I've rested it, the worst of the pain subsided and now I just have to stay off my feet. But when it was in the angry stage, it felt like I was tearing something in my leg every time I moved.

(I'm a dog walker so I haven't been able to work in four weeks, since this started- this sucks!!)

Terracotta

I've seen a few people mention you shouldn't plant hoya (or other tropical plants) in terracotta.

Something like 75% of my plants are planted directly in terracotta. I did this intentionally, because it prevents me from overwatering them. I have a tendency to be...abundant with my watering practices. It does seem to be working for most of my plants (especially my calathea). But I'm curious about the hoya- I have a GG currently in terracotta that is happily growing.

Is watering more often offsetting the downsides of terracotta sucking out moisture? Or should I repot my hoya?

Hoya ID? My Aunt’s 20 year old Hoya

She says it was labeled as a black margin, but it doesn’t look like my black margin.

She says the flowers are light pink.

Give yourself a break: Update

I haven’t been able to leave my house for anything but a medical appointment in two weeks because I can’t get to my car without crutches.

Give yourself a break. Seriously. Say no. Working for months on end with zero days off is NOT healthy. Your body WILL quit on you.

Give yourself a break (before your body forces you to).

Timely with my last post, but after working for a month straight with zero days off and killing myself to manage the business plus my household, I developed a groin strain- now I can't walk even a few feet without an electric shock running through my leg.

Recovery time is anywhere from 3-6 weeks. I went from handling absolutely everything to being able to do absolutely nothing literally overnight.

So this is your reminder to take breaks. Say no. Give yourself a few days off. You may have to give up a couple days worth of pay, but that's better than losing out on six weeks!

Work/life balance is BRUTAL in this industry

I went into my current business knowing what it was going to be like. I’m in a VERY high cost of living area with lots of pet people. I ran a business for 8 years in another state. I know to schedule time off and protect it.

But somehow I was still blindsided by just how successful this business was going to be. I basically find myself working every single day, all day. I have maybe an 30 minutes to an hour off somewhere in the middle of the day, but work from the early morning until late at night.

It sucks for me, for my own dogs, for my husband who is in school and working full time AND helping with the business when he can.

I know this is a recipe for burn out. I have a friend helping (who is part of the business) but that friend doesn’t drive so they can only cover so much. And despite the amount of work we do, we are still struggling financially in our area (our rent is $2,700 after utilities- it’s brutal here).

I hate saying no to good clients but one weekend off every so often isn’t cutting it for me.

I think one of our core issues is that we offer dailies and pet sitting and we’re maxed out on both. As of right now, I’m booked through July. The sucky part is that we have both really good dailies and really good pet sitting clients and I don’t want to give either of them up.

I’m sending out a price increase this week in the hopes some of these people will self select out of the business. I don’t know if I’m just at the point where I need to hire somebody? Or drag my friend to the DMV (lol, their mom and I have considered it)?

I’m chronically exhausted right now. I worked a month straight in April and have had one weekend off since then. I work this weekend. I’m desperately protecting next weekend.

Should I be announcing to my clients what weekends I am taking off? Just say “no weekends”? Hire for weekend help? How are all of you handling this?

I was diagnosed in my 20s and at the time I didn’t believe them because I genuinely thought it was just *me* that was the problem.

Looking back now that I am in 30s, I don’t understand how teachers, parents, and school administrators who always has the time to criticize everything about me never took the time to stop and consider that I was struggling.

Girls present differently, but I had TEXTBOOK symptoms.

I’m 37 now. I’m mad about how much I had to suffer to get here. I will never get back the potential I would have had in a world where I wasn‘t blamed for everything.

I’m trying to set limits for our business after a particularly grueling couple of weeks. This was so much easier when I was younger, but I just don’t have the energy to go at the same pace I used to.

So at what point do you feel maxed out?
