This image explains writer's block better than most writing books.

I came across this image today and couldn't ignore it because... yeah, this is pretty much every writing session I've ever had. We throw around the term "writer's block" like it's one thing, but it really isn't.

Sometimes I have no clue what happens next, sometimes I know exactly what happens next but I just don't feel like writing it.

Sometimes my brain is fried after work and sometimes I somehow end up watching YouTube videos about Roman roads instead of writing my novel

Realizing this completely changed how we built Novel Mage. Instead of trying to create one magical button to "fix writer's block," we started building tools for different situations

Brainstorming when you're out of ideas, Agent Chat when you've lost track of your story, feedback when you're second-guessing yourself, and Writer's Voice when you need help getting words onto the page without losing your style.

Because not every writer gets stuck for the same reason.

Whenever I get stuck in the middle of a story, it’s usually because I’ve lost track of what should happen next.

This kind of structure helps a lot

  • Act 1 (Ch 1–15): Setup, characters, stakes, inciting incident
  • Act 2A (Ch 16–30): Rising action, relationships, small wins, midpoint twist
  • Act 2B (Ch 31–45): Things fall apart, betrayal, lowest point
  • Act 3 (Ch 46–60): Final push, confrontation, resolution

It’s not something you have to follow rigidly, but it’s great when your story feels messy, pacing feels off or you just don’t know what comes next

Think of it like a map, not a rulebook.

I’ve been using this kind of breakdown while building inside Novel Mage, and it makes organizing long stories way less overwhelming.

I came across a simple tip recently that actually changed how I think about characters. Instead of only describing how they look, you give them a specific smell or sound tied to them. Something small, but consistent.

Like a character who always smells faintly of cigarettes and cinnamon, or someone you recognize by the jingle of keys before they even enter a room. It’s such a subtle thing, but it makes them feel more real and easier to remember.

I tried it in a few scenes, and it instantly added more presence without needing extra description. It’s almost like the character shows up before they’re even on the page.

Curious if anyone else does this intentionally, or if it just happens naturally while writing?

I saw this idea floating around that strong writing comes down to sensory detail, motion, and tension. It sounded obvious enough that I didn’t really question it. But when I actually looked at my own draft, I realized I was basically just describing what things looked like and calling it a day. Everything was visual, a bit of dialogue, and almost nothing you could actually feel or experience.

Out of curiosity, I ran my manuscript through something I’ve been building for Novel Mage, and it kind of called me out. It showed me that smell barely existed in my writing, touch was inconsistent, and whole chunks of scenes were just “sight-only.” There were even sections where nothing sensory was happening at all, which probably explains why those parts felt flat no matter how much I edited the wording.

What hit me was how specific the feedback was. Instead of vague advice like “add more detail,” it pointed to actual gaps like where a scene could use grounding, or where everything felt too distant. It didn’t try to rewrite anything for me, which I appreciated. It just made me notice what I wasn’t doing.

Since then, I’ve started thinking less in terms of “describe better” and more in terms of “what is actually happening in this moment?” What does it sound like, what does it feel like, what’s changing? Even small tweaks started making scenes feel more alive without adding a ton of extra words.

I’m curious how others approach this. Do you consciously think about senses while writing, or is it more instinctive?

Plot holes used to be the thing that killed every draft I started. Not bad ideas just inconsistency & forgotten details

What changed things for me recently though was using dedicated novel writing tools

Using something like Novel Crafter or Sudowrite, but these tools are not quite sustainable with the monthly subscription plus the credits and the BYOK the more you write the more you pay doesn't make sense to me

So we worked on Novel Mage just a onetime purchase and lifetime access and here are a few things stand out which can actually help you with plot inconsistencies

  • The agent chat remembers your manuscript, so you can literally ask: “Does this contradict chapter 2?”
  • Character interviews helped me flesh out motivations without overthinking
  • Reader personas simulate feedback super useful for spotting “this doesn’t make sense” moments
  • And the structure (acts → chapters → scenes) makes it harder to lose track in the first place

It’s not magic, but it reduces the confusion a lot.

  • Helps you iterate faster without guessing what works

🔓 Jailbreaking System (Beta)

  • ⚠️ Still early let us know if anything breaks

⚡ Improvements

🧠 Context & Long Chats
