New Orleans style jazz drumming?

I want to learn New Orleans style / second line jazz drumming and just plan to play solo at home. I exclusively play simple rock and pop at home and I’m not particularly good and still in beginner self taught phase. Im in a rural area but found an online jazz instructor to do a few lessons and it’s not too cost prohibitive. In the mean time I’m wondering if anyone else plays this style and any good books or YouTube channels to jump into? I found a few cool old documentaries of Baby Dodds to start with.

Good options for online coach with one time programming fee?

Looking for an online coach. Most seem to have monthly installments of 75-300+$ a month. I’m interested in a sub 20 minute 5k. So far, I’ve found Jadon Fitzgerald who definitely has a great pedigree and awesome YouTube content that does a 120$ custom running plan that looks very detailed and incorporates some strength training as well:

It’s hard to find other one off programming options like this. Just curious if anyone else had found a good online coach that just offers a one time transactional coaching / programming option

Noob question about pedal screws

I have a Gretsch energy stock kick drum pedal with the screw missing from the hoop clamp where you tighten it down to not slip off the hoop. Are these hoop clamp screws all the same diameter across brands and what’s a good place to grab one online ?

Dumb American here, spot check my team choice please

I watch and play basketball and am familiar with baseball, soccer, American football, etc. I was skimming Fox sports and saw something called Australian Football. I stupidly assumed it was soccer. I witnessed the most glorious sport I’d ever seen and watched the entire match. It was like rugby, soccer, American football combined and then I about gasped when I realized they must also dribble the ball every 15 meters like a basketball dribble! I can’t believe American colleges have ultimate frisbee teams or Quidditch but not this glorious sport.

My research continued to learn basic rules and what was seeing. The team I saw was the Hawthorne Hawks. I did further digging and found the USAFL with American clubs. I live in Tucson, Arizona United States (I’ve heard it compared to Australias landscape) and the closest club to me is in Phoenix Arizona and is called the Hawks as well. This is about 2 hours drive but very cool. It seems like this must be my team? I choose teams for life based upon emotion, luck, and happenstance. Is this a correct team choice? There’s only a bit of the season left it seems and I only get so many matches. Also, what do you do when the season ends?

Online lesson frequency?

Said teaching noob here. I have an acoustic kit and practice pad. I can sight read very easy stuff and play along to very simple rock and pop at lower tempos. I’m wanting to one online lesson a month and no more. I mostly want someone to critique my practice routine and give me homework or exercises to do in my own. I’m pretty self motivated. It’s a bit hard to find frequency expectations or how it’s structured. I did in person lessons with one of the few accessible people around me and wasn’t a good structure.

How to be a rec or pickup goalie?

I want to start playing soccer. I really want to be a goalkeeper just at the rec or pickup level. I found a 5 on 5 indoor place that has co-ed pickup drop ins which is the lowest barrier I can find but no idea how they decide who does what. I’ve played basketball, volleyball, judo, and some boxing and I feel like the reflexes would carry over well. But not sure if goal keeping is something you can just show up and do it try.

First Bench only event at first meet, any tips?

I have a bench only event at a full meet in December. I’m probably early intermediate. My deadlift is low but working on it and squat is out due to injury rehab. I’m running 5/3/1 for bench plus accessories and enjoy it. I have a goal of 125 kg by then and am on track to hit it. I practice the commands on my heavy doubles or singles. I have chalk and a singlet and good wrist wraps. I might use a coach once as it’s closer to dial in the 3 attempt amounts. Weight class doesn’t matter much as I’m just maintaining and doing it for fun. My form is decent and my diet and protein and creatine intake are good enough for a hobbyist but I’m dialing it in as much as I can. Sleep and recovery are okay but dialing in a bit more. Any other tips to prepare? Do I need to know rack heights and such or can they help you at weigh in?

What’s your favorite splash cymbal? The weirder the better

I love splash cymbals for accents or just jamming around. It’s all I use outside of a ride and crash. I picked up a cheap Zildjian Pitch Black 13” splash on a whim. That line gets a lot of hate and it’s huge for a splash but I actually really love it now. It has a very distinct sound and no sustain. Sometimes I even crash on it since I just jam solo at home

I have a cymbal addiction but my budget is used up

Shopping for, researching, and buying used cymbals on a budget is like crack. My latest cymbal will arrive soon from Reverb. I’m already wanting more but my budget is used up and I don’t have the hardware. What’s a good equipment distraction until I can splurge again?

I thought of doing a deep dive into either tuning or sticks. I use the Rob Brown quick tuning method and it’s great but I always want to know more. I also wouldn’t mind a deep dive into sticks and might purchase a pair. I’ve never bothered and just hack away with 5bs but the sizes and compositions are interesting. My practice and trainings covered as I have a separate regimen for that but I need an equipment obsession to distract my cymbal addiction.

Offering English; seeking Uzbek

Looking for very basic Uzbek for tourist travel, perhaps less than A1 level. I’m a native English speaker with no accent. I am familiar with some tech and other vocational topics.

How does confirmation work? Is it standardized?

I want to be Episcopal. I take communion every week I’m free (twice a month or so). I’m a bit confused if there’s required classes or process to do confirmation or how it works. Or can you just have it done privately? Or is it done during a regular service? I plan on asking of course but it seems to drastically differ church by church on what’s required and how they do it. I’ve been baptized in another faith and I’m not really a huge fan of doing things in front of many people. I’m already on the email list and regular attendance of a parish.

Uzbek language learning for travel question

Hello. I am American and love to travel. I’ve had a deep interest in Uzbekistan for a long time. Before I travel somewhere I like to learn a bit of the language (probably A1 level) and try to use some of it. It seems everyone tries to learn English so it’s only respectful to at least learn a few things of the places I travel to.

I’m wondering two things: the lessons below are great and exactly what I’m looking for:

https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkREkayoYCyJTalLuWnjCV6\_0rJBfT8rC&ra=m

Is it generally well received in Uzbekistan when tourists try to speak a bit of the language? I’d probably hire a tutor as well to really learn just a few basic things.

My experiences have been mixed: very basic Spanish always is well received and other places they just look annoyed and switch to English right away, which is fine.

5 a side - What skills to just do co ed pick up?

There’s 5 a side indoor co ed pickup near me. It’s labeled beginner friendly but I want to be a bit better. I’m quickly improving stamina but what’s a good entry of skills to just not be total ass? I used to powerlift so I’m still a bit fat but no stranger to hard training. I pass the ball around with a training partner so far.

Putting low volume cymbals on Alesis?

I have an acoustic kit and practice pad station. I still have my old tiny Alesis I use from time to time when working on a new song to learn the groove. I have two extra low volume cymbals and instead of putting them in storage I thought of taking off the crappy electronic rubber ride and crash and putting the low volume metal cymbals on those arms. I think felt washers on both sides would have enough width to be able to tighten it down. It’s 5$ for a bunch of them can’t hurt to try. Wondering if anyone else has done this.

Favorite washy and dark ride on a used budget

I have a stock Sabian SBR that’s just clunky brass and my 30$ Chinese low volume cymbal actually sounds better for now. I’ve got my ride next to upgrade and I’m looking for something used on Reverb for 150$ or less. My dream would be something as dark and washy as possible with lots of sustain. Something that sounds really long and rain like if you crash on it. Not sure where to start or how old to go other than nothing brass. I found a few 1990s Zildjian bronze Avedis in that range

Best way for noobs to learn opening and closing of hi hat not just on the last eighth note ?

Noob here Trying to get that left foot control to open and close the hi hat at different places within a bar. I can do it on 4& easily when it’s open and close on just one eighth note. My plan is to just go very slow only on the hihat at like 40 bpm until it’s muscle memory. Interested in any other better tips too. I’m learning this song below, the beat and fills are no problem but I’m just buns at even simple left foot control and want to level that sucker up

How to cross and when to do it ?

How and when would you cross and when would you do it during a Rite 1 or Rite 2 Eucharist? I enjoy physical ritual stuff but not sure where to start as that’s not my background.

Do you need confirmation to officially be a member?

I’m an ex Mormon, baptized and left as an adult a decade ago. I tried out various Episcopal and UCC churches a few times a year since then trying to find a new home. I landed on the Episcopal church but kind of gave yo on religion and finally found a perfect parish actually. Everyone was very kind and it’s exactly what I was hoping I’d find as a community.

I think I want to make it my home. I’ve never thought about all the different entry points for membership. To be fully “in” do you have to be confirmed if you’ve been baptized in another religion? Or is it optional ? For everything else do they just add you to the rolls? I plan on asking but my googling has led to a few different answers. I’m not in any rush but I want to officially make it my home and be part of the community.
