Utahime doesn't have "deep hatred" for Gojo
I've seen the "Utahime hates Gojo" thing get taken way further than what the actual canon supports so I wanted to clear up what I mean when I say she doesn't hate him.
First, yes, Utahime genuinely dislikes Gojo. I'm not trying to argue against that.
Her character sheet says:
"五条のことは割とマジで嫌い"
Gojou no koto wa wari to maji de kirai
A common translation is:
"She hates Gojo most of the time."
That's not an accurate translation of 割と (wari to). It doesn't mean "most of the time." The sentence is closer to:
"She actually seriously dislikes Gojo."
五条のことは = "As for Gojo"
割と = "fairly", "rather", "actually/pretty"
マジで = "seriously", "for real"
嫌い = "dislike/hate"
I'm not going to pretend 嫌い (kirai) can only mean "dislike." Depending on the context, it can absolutely be translated as "hate." The important thing is that 嫌い by itself doesn't tell us that we're dealing with the strongest possible form of hatred.
Japanese has other words that more explicitly convey things like deep resentment or intense hatred. For example, 怨恨 (onkon) carries the sense of a grudge or deep resentment while 憎悪 (zouo) refers to intense hatred. I'm not saying Gege had to use one of these words if he wanted to say "hate" - language obviously doesn't work that mechanically. I'm just pointing out that 嫌い alone doesn't establish that Utahime has some profound or malicious hatred toward Gojo.
What the full phrase 割とマジで嫌い makes especially clear is that her feelings are genuine. She's not pretending to be annoyed or secretly playing along with Gojo's teasing. She seriously dislikes him and his behavior. That's canon. The idea that this automatically means she has some deep-seated hatred for him is the part that's being added on top of the text.
Her irritation is very real
This is also consistent with Gege's supplementary comments about Gojo being a source of stress for people. The fanbook basically jokes that Gojo is the source of stress for at least Utahime, Ijichi and Gakuganji, potentially Yaga too because having to give Gojo orders is stressful.
So yes, Gojo is genuinely annoying to Utahime because he constantly teases her, talks down to her, mocks her and deliberately gets on her nerves. She's been dealing with that since their school days.
But I've seen this "source of stress" comment used as evidence that Utahime deeply hates Gojo which is kind of funny because then we'd have to say Ijichi hates Gojo too.
Being annoyed or stressed by someone isn't automatically deep hatred.
Gojo doesn't even realize how much he annoys her
There's also a supplementary interview/comment explaining that Gojo doesn't know Utahime genuinely dislikes him.
From Gojo's perspective, their constant arguing is basically banter. He thinks they're joking around and considers them good friends. He apparently sees this as an inside joke they've had going since their school days.
Utahime, meanwhile, does not see it that way. She isn't joking around with him; she genuinely thinks he's an asshole.
I think this is important because there isn't anything malicious coming from Gojo's side either. There's no indication that he's deliberately trying to hurt her. He's just an obnoxious guy who enjoys annoying people and doesn't realize when he's actually crossed the line.
So their dynamic is basically:
Gojo: "Haha, I'm annoying Utahime again."
Utahime: "I genuinely fucking hate dealing with this guy."
Gojo: "We're such good friends." 💀
But Utahime still trusts him
This is where I think "deep hatred" becomes especially difficult to support.
Utahime clearly recognizes that Gojo is a great sorcerer and someone she can rely on professionally. Gojo trusted her enough to ask her to investigate the traitor at Jujutsu High and she helped him. >!She also helped him before he fought Sukuna. !<
It makes perfect sense that she dislikes him personally while still trusting him as a sorcerer at the same time.
They've known each other for years, have mutual friends and share the goal of protecting and raising the next generation of sorcerers. Their personal irritation doesn't erase that.
It's similar to how Nanami views Gojo: you can find someone insufferable and have very little respect for their personality while still having faith in them and trusting them when it actually matters.
So I don't think Utahime was secretly cheering for Sukuna or hoping Gojo dies or anything insane like that. She knows he's not a bad person. She just thinks he's an asshole.
I also think people make their relationship more complicated than it is
There's honestly not that much material about their interpersonal relationship. A lot of the fandom interpretation comes from familiar dynamics and tropes.
Some people see their constant arguments as a tsundere-type dynamic. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. Some people interpret Gojo's behavior as him genuinely thinking their banter is a form of bonding. Others just see it as Gojo being annoying and Utahime being pissed off.
That's all interpretation.
If you ship them, cool. If you don't, also cool. Shipping is just for fun and you don't have to turn your interpretation into a statement about what the other person "doesn't understand" about the characters.
Personally, based on what we're actually shown, I think the simplest reading is:
They're old colleagues who have known each other for years, have a degree of professional trust and can work together just fine while Utahime personally finds Gojo incredibly annoying and genuinely dislikes his behavior.
That's it.
She dislikes him. She hates his antics. But she still trusts him. And doesn't have deep, malicious hatred for him.
Those things aren't contradictory.
Also I'm not saying any of this because I ship them. I just like Utahime and I don't like seeing her characterization get turned into "Utahime genuinely hates Gojo and wanted Sukuna to kill him" 💀
Like dude, she thinks he's an annoying asshole but she isn't seriously plotting his downfall 🙏
TL;DR Utahime genuinely dislikes Gojo. Gege literally says so. His teasing annoys her and her irritation is real. But 嫌い doesn't automatically mean profound, malicious hatred and nothing in their actual relationship suggests she wants him harmed or considers him an enemy. She can think he's an annoying asshole while still trusting him as a sorcerer, working with him and recognizing that he's a good person underneath all the bullshit.
