Stop cold DMing portfolios: A simple outreach pivot that doubled my UGC response rate
When I first started out in UGC, I fell into the classic trap: sending long, text-heavy cold messages with a generic link to my Google Drive portfolio. Unsurprisingly, my response rate was hovering around 5%.
Brands and agency buyers are flooded with links daily. They don't have time to open a massive folder unless they already know you solve a specific problem for them.
After testing a few different outreach strategies, I switched to what I call the "Value-First Teaser" approach, and my response rate jumped significantly. Here is the exact framework I use now:
- The 2-Second Hook (The Video Audit)
Instead of pitching your general services, pick one piece of content currently on their TikTok or Instagram Reels feed and offer a micro-critique or a fresh hook idea.
Example: "Hey [Name], saw your latest product breakdown for [Brand]. The hook was solid, but I tested a variation on a similar skincare product last week that bumped the retention rate by 15% by shifting the pain point to the first 2 seconds..."
- The Low-Friction Visual Proof
Instead of linking an entire portfolio, embed or attach one single screenshot or GIF directly in the message that proves you can match their aesthetic. If you're pitching a fitness brand, attach a cropped, clean screenshot of a high-converting hook text overlay you used previously. Keep it bite-sized so they don't have to click away to see your capability.
- The Soft Call-to-Action (CTA)
Never ask for a call or a big project right out of the gate. Ask a low-friction question that makes it easy for them to reply with a simple "yes" or "no."
Example: "Are you guys currently testing new UGC creators for your upcoming Q4 campaigns, or are you fully locked in right now?"
