Now that it's all rebuilt and running properly, I really love driving my TJ

Went to a comedy show tonight with the wife, and decided to take the TJ. It is such a cool Jeep that even non-Jeep folks comment on it. Very thankful to have a super clean piece of history, it makes me smile just cruising around town.

My take on a clean amateur radio install on a TJ.

My Yaesu FTM-500 install. I bolted the control unit to the steering column, installed an RJ12 mic jack on the column kick panel, and used a Magnetic Mic mount that had worked out REALLY well with my JL to hold the mic. The antenna is mounted to an NMO mount on the stock bumper, I might move this soonish to the actual corner of the bumper but this was an existing hole that was the perfect size for the mount.

The remote head is mounted with a RAM motorcycle mirror ball mount in the little divot on the bottom of that dash panel, using a clamp in the control head that fits the tripod-ish mount that Yaesu uses. It is remarkably well placed and adjustable, I can easily angle it to me and not get close to interfering with the shifter. I'll post better pics of this part tomorrow and post in the comments, the lighting is very poor this late in my garage, and to understand this system of mounts really requires more detailed shots.

Antenna is a Comet B10. The antenna sucks, I get perfect ~1.01 SWR after tuning on UHF, but it fails completely on VHF frequencies >3.0.) I am tempted to try a big honking half wave dual bander on it that I know works well on compromised setups just to rule out a coax/mount issue.

Forgive the dirty bumper, I just got done rebuilding the head and the engine bay and front bumper are covered in coolant and got knows what else right now

Can't stop looking at this thing when I drive it.

Looks cool as hell just running to get a pizza. Just got the top end rebuild done today, it's running great now and I fixed the CKS/CPS timing issues it had that kept stalling it at random. Truly a dream to tool around in, and I can't wait to hit some mountain roads here in WNC this fall.

When winter hits, it's gonna be time for the real project to begin, aiming to be on 33s with 4" of lift, SYE, and regear before spring.

Looking for OEM JLU Rubicon rock rails in Western NC / Upstate SC

Posting here because I don’t use FB and the options on Craigslist are thin.

I am looking to pick up some clean-ish stock Rubi rails. The previous owner of my JLUR put THE shittiest Rough Country step rails on it, and I am freaking sick of them.

Willing to pay for them, and also willing to come to you to pick em up. Let’s chat if you are trying to clear some of these out of your garage.

Threw a new soft top on the TJ before it got ridiculously hot and stormy later today

Not that it matters much, this one needs surgery for a new cam. But I had the replacement top so I might as well get it ready for the rainy season when I get all the top end work done. Bonus points: tinted windows in the back finally!

The father, the son, and the black sheep no one cares about

I recently bought this 2006 TJ, and finally got around to cleaning it up for some pics. It goes great with the 2022 JLUR, and the best part about it is my wife can't drive it so I'll never hit my knees on the steering wheel again.

Also shown is our literally free 07 Liberty that I fucking hate but can't complain about because it does drive and it has cold AC.

This whole debacle has sparked a realization for me...

You can literally be a Wallet Inspector when it comes to Magic Internet Money and if you are a good enough Wallet Inspector the money is just handed to you.

Imagine the chaos if the real financial system just folded in half if some vendor's dice roll was just a bit flawed.

Pretty happy with the Spikes Tactical enhanced castle nut and extended endplate.

Edit: Sigh, Strike Industries, not Spikes Tactical. No idea how I fucked that up. It's been a long day

I had to install this castle nut and endplate on my favorite "pistol" to correct a major oversight on the sling mounting position on the brace. The result came out great, but holy crap it was impossible to find a proper ring spanner locally so I had to order one, and you can't use a traditional armorers tool because the extended castle nut is fairly delicate at the end.

I had already planned on replacing the buffer tube and castle nut even without the sling mount fix, because I had marred the shit out of my G$ buffer tube when I first built this thing. The sling mount on the SBA4 sucks ass though, it was extremely frustrating to use with Magpul-style sling swivels because it freaking can't swivel at all at the mount points on the brace, leading to a seriously annoying situation where the sling either sits cocked weird at the brace, or just twists up and gets bound up on the brace.

That said, this project is finally done and I can't wait to go try it out this weekend. Hoping it fixes a lot of the ergonomics when using a sling, because I really don't want to buy another brace or deal with the federal paperwork to create a short barreled rifle (even if it's free. There are some major downsides to an SBR in my state regarding transport)

Anyone got an updated "NVG for Dummies" guide handy? Please school me, LGO sub.

I have read through the other subs and it's all pretty confusing to me. I know enough to know where I want to end up, something helmet mounted, something I can mount comms to, with a reasonably modern tube but nothing super Gucci or anything. Main use would probably be hiking first, LARPing behind that. I don't know if binocular tubes are imperative for hiking use, or just a nice to have.

Basically, I think what I'm interested in is if there's a turnkey "kit" of sorts to get me where I want to be that isn't just a complete rip off. My budget isn't super strict but I'm not really trying to spend late model used car money.

I finally gave in and put a TLR-7 Sub on my carry piece... it is worth it

I was not a believer on a WML until recently. I have carried my 43X for years without one, just rolling with a dot. That was until I recently got a 19X and just maxed it out. Training with the light on the 19X really put things in perspective for me, especially for dry fire practice in my dark office.

I feel like I should have done this a LONG time ago, and while I still don't think a CCW firearm absolutely requires a WML, it does help a lot IMO

I have very strong opinions on peanut butter

Got a matching backplate for my 19X to go with my JIF backplate on my FDE 43X.

NGD: Finally found a good deal on a Gen 5 Glock 19X MOS with a threaded barrel

Been looking for one of these for a LONG time. I did a stupid move and waited after the Gen 5s got discontinued, and then I slowly realized it was very unlikely the 19X would be released in a similar configuration for the GenV or Gen6s.

My buddy had one brand new just collecting dust and sold it to me at cost to him, which was blue label pricing. Instant buy for me.
