AMA: Basketball historian, fan, huge nerd, and author of "The Mikan-dex: Basketball, Ranked"

Hi everyone! I am a basketball historian who has a book coming out July 7, 2026 (Amazon won't give me a preorder link until I "finalize" everything, and I'm going to tinker with this thing until the last minute). If you haven't seen my posts before, either here or on r/nba over the past few years, I use a mathematical algorithm to rank players (I don't personally rank or adjust these at all once the math has done its thing, I just offer context on why the player is ranked where he is, along with some facts and stories about them.)

If you have any questions about how the system works, or how I built the system, or really anything basketball/basketball history related, ask away and I'll do my best to answer! Planning on being here for the next few hours while I do massive edits all day, so help break my day up for me please!

What would you say the odds of Brunson achieving a “Career Grand Slam” are?

The Career Grand Slam is a term I just invented, but it’s winning an NCAA title, an NBA title, an Olympic gold medal, and World Cup gold medal. He’s got the first two now, and has played for Team USA in the World Cup before (finished fourth in 2023). He’s 29 now, so will have probably two more chances at each of the international golds if he wants.

For the record, only one person has ever done this before, and it’s Anthony Davis. (They also both have an NBA Cup coincidentally)

Are the reigning championship MVPs the most random quartet of players we’ve ever had?

Jalen Brunson, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Kenneth Walker III, Jordan Staal. I’m sure there was another stretch of random guys winning, but only four All-Star selections between the four of them seems pretty low

Edit: some of you seem to be missing the point, or maybe I didn’t explain it well. They’re not *all* random non-stars individually. But collectively, would that have been the hardest quartet to predict. Someone else said 2016 though, so I think that wins so far

Firestar Toys question

How have everyone’s experiences with this retailer been? I see they have quite a few figures or add-ons that would enhance the recent larger sets. (Their Faramir is 100 times better even though it’s sold out right now.) Theoden and Eowyn look really good too, with some various torso and arm prints. Plus proper molded staffs and swords. Has anyone gotten any of these and consider them “must have” additions? Bonus points if anyone can tell me who the two rangers are supposed to be, or if they’re just generic dudes

The Mikan-dex: Methodology, Part I

Good morning, everyone! I have a new post up with the first half of my methodology chapter on my substack if you feel like checking it out. (Unfortunately, my program does not allow me to copy/paste footnotes, so I guess that's a book-exclusive feature?) Part II will be next week, and I'll probably do some samples of player pages from throughout the book the week after that. Then it'll just be a couple weeks until release! Yeah, we're only a little over a month out! Are you getting hyped and incredibly nervous, or is that just me?

Anyway... here's the link: https://mikandex.substack.com/p/methodology-part-i?r=8heigd

Thanks again for reading and your support!

Mikan-dex Substack Link

Hello, everyone. Hope everyone is having a great long weekend in the States, and I guess a great regular weekend everywhere else? Anyway, I just wanted to pass along that I have a sample chapter up, and will probably have 2-3 more over the next few weeks if you want to check them out over on my substack:

The Mikan-dex: Basketball, Ranked (The Online Version)

Right now, everything is free, and you can sign up to be notified when a new post goes live (I'll still post here until the book comes out on occasion just as a reminder, but whatever is easiest for you.)

Also, here's the updated cover with the bar code in the right place and everything!

That's all going to be a little down the road just a bit as I'm still finalizing pages and layouts, and then need to get the e-book ready shortly after. But my plan is to get all my data onto the substack and maybe subscribers could give me feedback? Or at least dig under the hood a little more if they wanted. Plus, I can do more players, and one day expand to ranking every player who ever played even a minute in the league (mwahahaha!). Well, I'm 15% done with every player as it is, you never know.

So, that's there if you want to check it out. I truly appreciate all the support this community has shown over the past few years as I've worked to finish this thing. And enjoy the game tonight everyone! (Go Wemby!)

If you’ve got some time to kill and want to watch an in-his-prime Arvydas Sabonis vs a still-in-college David Robinson for a full game, have I got a treat for you

The 1986 FIBA World Cup (called the World Championship at the time) saw Sabonis (#15) and Robinson (#11) battling for gold. I think Sabonis was 21 and Robinson was 20. The commentary is all in Spanish, so sorry if you don’t speak Spanish, but you’ll get the gist (the Spanish crowd *loved* Muggsy Bogues). This tournament also had Drazen Petrovic (Yugoslavia) vs Oscar Schmidt (Brazil) in the bronze medal game.

I’m not saying anyone NEEDS this isolated image of Bill, but I’m gonna leave it here just in case

If someone were to use this to make funny memes, I won’t be mad or anything

Good morning, everyone. I’m not very practiced at self-promotion (gonna have to get better), but I just wanted to put it out there that I have a book about the history of basketball coming out on July 7, 2026. It is called “The Mikan-dex: Basketball, Ranked” and profiles over 700 players in basketball history. If you've followed me on here or seen my posts on here or on r/nba, I've been using a mathematical algorithm to "rank" players (as in, put their careers in context and perspective) and posting the results for a few years. Well this now has been turned into a physical book!

I won’t have a link until all the files are uploaded and finalized, but it will be available from Amazon or any bookstore. It should be approximately 800 pages, and is the culmination of approximately 15 years of research, writing, editing, and designing. There will be an e-book available, but it might not be ready exactly at the same time. The tentative cover is attached here, and please ask if you have any questions!

Mods, let me know if this level of "self-promotion" isn't allowed. I'm not putting this post in r/nba for that reason, but I figured there might be some people here who wanted to know this was on the way!

I think I have every Captain America omnibus released so far. Is the Heroes Reborn omnibus something I should look into for those 12 issues? (I think I have all or most FF omnibuses too.) Or is there a chance those issues will show up somewhere else?

I feel like I’m being punk’d but I’m not sure how or why. Steve Smith is still a straight-up bitch, though
