need advice

hey r/CalgarySocialClub

as most of you know, i've been building koffeeyap publicly and this community is literally where it all started. so it only makes sense i come back here when i need advice.

this weekend I ran our first ever hand-picked matches. it's been equal parts exciting, stressful, and genuinely fun, but i've hit some real issues i need to be honest about.

issue 1: no-shows

some people aren't showing up. no message, no heads up, nothing. the other person is just sitting alone in a coffee shop waiting. that's not okay. if you can't make it, the bare minimum is letting your match know 24hrs before. leaving someone stranded is disrespectful and it kills the whole vibe of what we're trying to build.

issue 2: people taking advantage of the free model

i've been running koffeeyap for free because i wanted to learn, what works, what doesn't, what actually makes a good match. but some people have used that to request 10+ match changes. never seen that before honestly.

so here's what i'm thinking:

i want to add a small monthly fee, $11/month for one curated match per week. that's four real meetups a month for less than the cost of two coffees. affordable, but enough that people actually show up.

i'm also considering keeping the pre-meet details minimal on purpose. i've noticed we all carry way more bias than we realize, but when you actually sit down and talk to someone, you find out they're genuinely cool. i want to protect that moment.

what do you guys think? is the price and hiding other persons name till they meet fair? would you pay it? is this the right direction to head in?

best independent coffeeshops in Calgary?

hey everyone!

my name's Dev, i'm a cs student in calgary working on something in the "meeting people irl" space called koffeeyap and honestly one of the things i keep thinking about is where people actually feel comfortable grabbing a coffee with someone new.

not doing a pitch or anything lol, genuinely just curious:

what are your fav coffee shops? especially Canadian ones?

chains totally count, like Good Earth honestly hits different sometimes. but I'm also curious about the little spots people swear by that maybe not everyone knows about.

bonus points if you tell me why, is it the vibe? the seating? the fact that it's not too loud? the staff? genuinely want to understand what makes a coffee spot feel like a good place to just... exist and have a real conversation.

drop your picks below, would love to hear from people!!!

thx u so much for ur support! i love this comm

Hey everyone, I posted in this comm not so long ago, and got some really genuine responses, so I wanted to come back.

I've been working on something quietly for the past few days, personally matching strangers in Calgary for one-on-one coffee meetups. No apps, no algorithms, just me reading a short survey and pairing two people I think would genuinely click.

We're opening up a founding cohort right now, the first 100 people who want to be matched. That's it. No cost, no catch. Just coffee and a stranger who might become a friend. Lots of folks in this comm have supported me in making this( thx u so much!), and it's time I thank you back by inviting you to our founding cohort! Let's connect Calgary! Just sign in and check it out!!
