8BitDo Ultimate 3 Mode Works Wirelessly on Xbox

I've discovered this like a year ago, but haven't seen anyone else discuss it. But the non-Rare Xbox Ultimates actually do work wirelessly with an Xbox. It's just not officially documented.

Been using my jade green Ultimate 3 Mode wirelessly on my Xbox (with the charging dock) just fine for about a year. So here's how you get it working:

  1. Make sure your Xbox is completely powered off. And I mean completely. When you initially power it off, it's actually still in a suspend/sleep state. You need to give it a couple of minutes for it to fully shut off. 2 minutes should be enough, but I'd give it 5 minutes just to be sure.
  2. With the Xbox fully off, plug in the 2.4ghz receiver that came with the controller. I have it inserted in a USB port in the back via the charging dock.
  3. Now simply turn on the Xbox, put the controller in 2.4ghz mode, and it should sync to the receiver.

And that's it. Your Xbox Ultimate now works wirelessly. You can even use the Ultimate-X app on the Xbox while wireless. In fact, the wireless profiles are separate from the wired profiles. Headphone jack works too.

Now, a couple of quirks:

  1. If you unplug the receiver while the Xbox is on, then plug it back in, the controller won't resync. You will have to fully power off the Xbox for it to resync. I think the receiver hooks into some API call on boot that allow it to work.
  2. In relation to Quirk 1, you can turn the controller itself off and back on just fine. So you can put it in the dock, and undock it while the Xbox is powered on and it will still work. It's just the receiver itself you can't remove.
  3. Say you've been using the controller away from the Xbox for a few days. Perhaps wired on your PC? When you put it back on the charging dock, it will power on the Xbox. This is interesting, since you can't power on the Xbox with the controller wirelessly any other way. The dock doesn't even need to be connected to the Xbox. It could just be the receiver in the Xbox, and the dock in your PC. It will still power on the Xbox.

Managed to brute force Lime's skin and voice

Won't spoil the code, but it's an easy one.

Local multiplayer is an underrated aspect of these handhelds

Devices are the TrimUI Brick Hammer and RG35XXSP running BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II on PPSSPP. Both devices running their respective Stock OS.

MuOS Themes are surprisingly easy to port over to the latest Stock OS

Decided to update my 35XXSP to the latest Stock OS on a spare card to see how it goes before committing to reflashing my main card. With the new OS comes a new theme style called "Mu." The .ini for it is literally called muos.ini, so Anbernic isn't hiding that they're just copying MuOS' theme style. With that, I wanted to see how easy it is to port over the themes I made for MuOS to Stock's copy of it. While it's not as simple as dragging and dropping the .pngs into a new folder, it's still relatively straightforward. Just had to resize and rename a couple of things. Anbernic does have one extra menu option than MuOS (Game Rooms). For that, I just left it as a menu-less wallpaper. One thing to note is the Anbernic Mu theme is horizontal and my theme is vertical, so I need to press left and right to navigate up and down.

Definitely gonna spend a bit more time with my theme's top border design to accommodate for the empty space, but pretty neat that Stock now has nicer customization. Now, this is only for the front/home menu. Everything else underneath (sound effects, system icons, loading screens, etc.) still requires editing the res1 folder as shown in my old guide here: www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/1ht2o51/how_to_make_custom_themes_for_stock_os_om_xx/

The mu theme files can be found in a new res folder called res3.

Finally achieved my dream 3DS TV setup

Device is RG Cube. Game is Majora's Mask 3D with the Project Restoration mod. Using the Cocoon frontend, which lets me retain controller inputs in "desktop mode" instead of that stupid mouse trackpad.

Got my Cube set up with Azahar and my copy of Majora's Mask 3D. Used a USB C dock/hub and then a USB C extension cable to reach the Cube from the couch. Yes the resolution is very pixelated as it's 1x, but it's not that bad when you consider you're sitting 12ft or so away.

Obviously this setup has been done before plenty of times with devices like the Steam Deck. Though a 1:1 or especially a 4:3 device is the most ideal, as the 3DS bottom screen is 4:3. So less gap between your thumbs on the buttons reaching for the touch screen when compared to a 16:9 or 16:10 handheld. Gyro also just works on Android with Azahar.

I can finally play 3DS games comfortably on a TV without needing to fiddle around with screen swapping and touch screen mapping. This is essentially just a tethered Wii U. Also have it set up to easily transfer my saves back and forth between the Cube and my actual 3DS. Cube for TV play, actual 3DS for handheld.

UPDATE 4/25/26:

The Japanese Twitter account made a statement. They are working on partial offline support. Kumarine tickets and furniture/outfits are tied to the servers. We'll have to see what they mean by "partial." Will we not be able to change any owned outfits/furniture offline? The outfit menu is one of the things that freezes the game when turning off wifi.

Original post:

Just wanted to let people know that an always active internet connection is required to play holoVillage, despite being a singleplayer experience (multiplayer isn't even implemented yet). Steam Offline Mode doesn't work, turning wifi off after starting the game doesn't work (doing so will cause the game to eventually freeze when doing basic tasks). So if you wanted to play this on something like a Steam Deck on a commute, a flight, etc., you can't. I personally can't play it when I have free time because my job's wifi blocks Steam.

Hopefully enough of a fuss can be made and the devs can remove the server requirements. Really disappointed in the devs for this.

Edit: Confirmed this game uses PlayFab to handle player and world data.
