Anyone else feel this way? (Or how to avoid it)

I'm from suburban America where people (generally) live in big houses and have yards. I now live in Taiwan (and Japan before this) where living space is extremely limited. I honestly didn't mind when I first moved overseas, but over the years it has been bothering me. There are certain hobbies I have to avoid, despite my interest in them, primarily because I don't have space. I don't have space for nice furniture, or even to exercise how I want. And now that I have a child, a yard sounds real nice. She'd be able to play outside at a moment's notice. It would no longer be an ordeal to get to the park just to play for a short period of time, which means she'd be able to do so much more often.

Obviously there are pros and cons to each country, and many reasons for living in Asia over the US. At the same time, this one particular aspect is not something I've grown accustomed to over time. Conversely, it's something that bothers me more and more the older I get.

Does anyone else feel this way? Or have any advice for navigating these feelings?

Leftrin appreciation

I'm rereading the series for the first time and I'm currently on City of Dragons. I don't see much love for Leftrin on here, but I just wanted to say what a great character he is. He's competent and loyal, but also not above getting his hands dirty or admitting his faults. He's the perfect foil for Hest, as he is basically everything the pompous Bingtowner is not.

Feel free to share whatever you like about the captain of the Tarman!

Is PKJ's Superman easy to understand for a beginner?

Or do you need to know a lot about Superman and/or the Authority to get what's going on.

Being a comic fan, I'm used to missing out on a few things and that's fine. But there's a difference between missing out on some details and being completely confused.

Wondering about this one specially because otherwise it looks sweet!

What are your favorite DC omnis?

A lot of members here seem to prefer DC to Marvel.

However, the DC omnis that are often recommended don't really appeal to me for one reason or another.

On the other hand, I'm really attracted to a lot of what Marvel puts out, despite it being hard to get at times. (For reference, some of my favorites include Ultimate Spider-Man, Hickman's Fantastic Four, Cates' Venom, Agent Venom, Aaron's Thor).

The only DC omnis I currently own are Loeb and Sale Batman, Snyder Batman 1-2, and Tomasi and Gleason Superman (haven't read yet).

I'd like to get more into DC, but like I said, I'm having trouble finding something that interests me. Drop some of your favorites below with a quick explanation of why you like it.

Is smoking this pervasive throughout the city? Or is it just Wanhua District?

I live near Longshan Temple Station and it seems that almost every person has a cigarette hanging out of their mouth at all times of the day.

They're not discreet or apologetic about it either, going so far as to blow smoke in my face and that of my 2-year-old daughter. Of course I try to avoid them as much as possible, even changing my route sometimes to limit the exposure, but it does very little due to the sheer number of smokers here.

I'm wondering if this is unique to the area or if it's a citywide issue. I've definitely noticed it less in other parts of the city, but it's really hard to tell not having lived there.

I really want to get out of here, but it seems like other 'nicer' parts of the city are exponentially more expensive, especially for a decent size place that can accommodate a family. Not really sure how people afford it...

How do you guys fill up your shelves while keeping books in some kind of order?

Most collections I see posted here have every book in alphabetical order with absolutely no empty space on the shelves.

And then there's me. I don't have that many omnis yet and I have the often recommended Kallax shelves, but even so, there's always some space that I can't fill.

I mean, I probably could if I put the books in some kind of whacky order, but as is, I can't seem to optimize my shelf space.

I've also heard it's better for the omnis to be stored flush against other books. So for the sake of my collection, help a guy out here!

Is the Death and Rebirth of Jean Grey omnibus a good read?

Especially for fans of Phoenix?

Does it present a cogent and enjoyable story even though it collects issues from various series?

I'm mostly seeing opinions of people annoyed at how it double dips other omnis, but I don't have those other books, so I'm considering it.

These pages of Aaron’s Wolverine (2010) hit me hard

Demons have possessed Wolverine and the X-men, among others, are trying to stop him. I’ve always found Magneto a sympathetic character, so this scene is just brutal.

Has anyone moved to a new country, disliked it at first, only to end up loving it after a while?

If so, please feel free to share your stories!

I'm wondering if there's any chance of my feelings changing since I'm currently in the "disliking it" phase.

Still recruiting members for comic book club!

I posted a few days ago about starting an American comic book club in Taipei, but I'm still looking for members to get this idea off the ground.

Here's the rundown:

Every other week, we will discuss a predetermined comic. The selections will be based on episodes of Back Issues by Comic Pop on YouTube (both old and new), so mostly Marvel and DC books (with titles by other publishers thrown in very occasionally).

You're free to read the book if you're able to obtain it and/or watch the episode so that you're able to contribute to the discussion.

After that, there will be time for members to share what else they have been reading recently. Any comics, graphic novels, or manga will be welcome for this portion of the meeting.

Meetings will occur every other Thursday from 8:00-9:00 pm at the Starbucks Banka Shop near Longshan Temple Station.

The first meeting is tentatively June 25th if there's enough interest.

If you're interested, please DM me so I can add you to our Line group. Thanks!

Taipei Comic Book Club

Hi! I'm interested in starting an American comic book club in Taipei. I posted this in some other places as well, but I thought it might get more traction here.

Here's my vision:

Meetings will occur every other Thursday from 8:00-9:00 pm at the Starbucks Banka Shop near Longshan Temple Station.

I'm hoping to get a small group of committed regulars to make this a thing.

If you're interested, please DM me so I can give you my info and add you to our new Line group.

How is Maze of Ith in 2026?

[[Maze of Ith]] is one of those classic cards that used to feel so powerful that it was practically broken, but I'm wondering about people's perceptions of it nowadays.

I'm personally debating whether I should put it in my pillowfort deck. I do have [[Weathered Wayfarer]] which can search it out and [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]] to make it tap for mana, but I'm still a bit on the fence. Not tapping for mana seems like a huge downside early in the game before I've stabilized.

In today's increasingly fast format, what do you think of this card?

What kind of decks would you consider running it in, if any?

Huge haul feat. my first non-Marvel omnis

I don't normally buy so many books at once, but I'm visiting family in the US so I'm going to save a lot on shipping by bringing them back in my spare suitcase.

It's ok--this will probably be my reading material for the next year or so 😂
