Question for other managers: How much notice does your GM usually require for requests off?

Basically just what it says on the tin. How much notice do you (shift supervisors and above) usually have to give your GMs if you want to request time off?

My cafe got a new GM at the beginning of the year and this one is very different than the last one. I’m curious how they compare to others. I was invited to an event with some friends at the end of this month (over three weeks from now) and just had my request off denied because the manager schedule had “been completed for weeks.” It’s important to note that our store’s manager schedule is never actually set in stone (at least not in practice) and does change sometimes. It’s also worth noting that we have at least one other manager that could swap days with me without issue.

I know a manager needs to give more notice for a request off than other associates since our job has fewer possible people that can cover it. I’m fully aware of and accommodating of that. Still, this seems excessive to me.

What do y’all think?

I always forget how unsettling those first Regenerator encounters are

Title pretty much says it all; I just wanted to share some appreciation.

I’ve been playing through the og RE4 again. I reached the initial Regenerators area tonight and god damn does this game do a great job of spiking your adrenaline! No matter how many times I play, those first couple of Regenerators always make it so that I can feel all of the blood in my body. I absolutely love it!

I’m so tired of the constant cycle of being understaffed, overworked, and criticized for working long hours

I need to rant.

I’m an AM. I’ve been with Panera for seven years. Things used to be great (or as great as any customer food service job could be) but it’s been going downhill for a long while now and at this point it’s just exhausting.

The thing that’s been really dragging me down recently is the constant hounding about hours. I’m almost exclusively a closing manager (not by request; I have no opposition to working open or mid shifts but it’s extremely rare that I’m scheduled for them since apparently every other manager in existence hates closing) and I tend to get out late. This leads to me often having more overtime than scheduled (or desired, thank you very much) and then getting screamed at by our new GM and our DM for it.

I genuinely don’t know what I’m doing so differently that makes me get out later than others and when I’ve asked for help/advice/recommendations on how to improve my times all they ever say is to be faster and to abandon my crew. Our times and retail health are already in the gutter and we’ve been getting under scheduled by like 60-80 hours a week recently. (Which, according to the GM doesn’t actually count as being short staffed since sales are down. As if being lower in sales magically reduces the amount of closing responsibilities/tasks we have, instead of just putting extra work on the shoulders of the people you do schedule without any additional compensation.) Leaving my employees to fend for themselves with no support helps no one in this equation. I have taken steps back and been delegating more (I’ll readily admit to having been a bit of a mother hen, but I’m working to change that) but they don’t care. If it doesn’t happen instantaneously they don’t see it as improvement.

I’m just sick of working 50+ hour weeks ensuring that my job is done properly only to get yelled at for having the audacity to care.
