FINALLY!!! We’re A 2 Bike Household 🤙🏼

It happened. It finally actually happened. After learning on my MT-07, gaining confidence on a Grom, then selling those bikes for my KTM 690 (pictured), my wife decided she needed a bike of her own. Enter the 0 mile 2022 Kawasaki Z400 (also pictured).

She was not comfortable or confident on the 690 Enduro because of the seat height which I sympathize with. I’ve been riding for 17 years and this KTM was my first bike with a seat height over 32” and it was a little intimidating to get the hang of. But I have the advantage of being 5’ 10” unlike my 5’ 5” wife……

So off to Marketplace where after much looking and contemplating and questioning and pondering and considering and then questioning again, we went and looked at a brand new 2022 Z400 a gentleman had in his garage (long story as to why he had a new 2022 in 2026 but that’s not relevant). The bike was a perfect fit. It’s compact, 30” seat height, and only 360lb with a full tank of fuel. Clutch pull is effortless, riding position is comfortable. It was the “whole package” so he accepted $4k is cash and she rode it home!

I’m stoked to have a wife that wants to ride. I can’t wait for date night to now include motorcycles!!! The 1 to 1 ratio of kids to parents is also perfect because I have room for 1 passenger as does she now….. life it good today. I’m very proud of my wife and happy to see her enjoying what she deserves!!!

Help!!! In Line Fuel Filter Access?!?!

I ordered some extra in line fuel filters for my 2016 KTM 690 Enduro R buuuuuut I can’t figure an easy way to access it. Do I really need to remove side plastics to fully remove the air box and remove the battery? The connector is tucked right under there against the frame. I’ve watched some videos on YouTube but those must all be of newer models because they appear to access it no problem. Am I missing something?!

I’d like to throw a fresh one in there before I have an issue and understand the process so I’m not trying to figure it out on the day it eventually fails….

Thanks in advance guys. Any input from 690 owners would be greatly appreciated

Steering Damper Fluid?!?!?

So I just received the rebuild kit…….O-rings…….. for my KTM branded steering damper. I’m going to disassemble it, clean it up and replace the O-rings. HOWEVER when it comes to what fluid to put back in it, I need some help. The rebuilt kit calls for 10wt hydraulic fluid but to my knowledge (and the knowledge of ChatGPT) hydraulic fluid does not do as well as fork oil when it comes to handling heat, foaming, nor are they standardized like fork oils ie. One brands 10wt could be the same as another brands 7.5wt or 15wt. Fork oil on the other hand appears to be a more consistent option and 10wt is 10wt across the board so there’s less “fine tuning” that needs to be done. I’ve read that a fork oil between 15wt and 30wt is where I want to be depending on use case.

My use case is a 2016 KTM 690 Enduro R that is 70% street 30% dirt. As I learn to ride dirt, and get more confident the dirt portion will hopefully increase. However until then I do a lot of riding at 70mph+ where definitely get a loose front end and wobbly at speeds above 80mph. It’s scary and I want to correct that with this rebuilt. My sag and front end geometry is set just fyi. I don’t do a lot of tight technical riding. I want stability!

So what should I be using?

So I currently own a 2016 KTM 690 Enduro R that I picked up fairly recently. What I don’t want to do is pick and choose tools from my current supply to create a toolkit suitable to long trips/ off road adventures.

Can anyone recommend a good premade toolkit for this bike? I see that Tusk sells one but even that doesn’t look very comprehensive? If anyone owns this bike and has a premade toolkit, what brand did you buy and what did you have to add? If you made your own and it’s proven effective, what all does it consist of?

I need some real help on this one, the thought of starting from scratch sounds overwhelming and expensive and you often just need certain sizes of this and that.

Thank you guys!!

This bike in general is new to me and I’ve had no issues until the last week when after I ride the bike during the day and come back out to it the next morning, there is fluid leaking from my KTM steering dampener. I’ve tried riding with the setting on 1 for a day and on 7 another day. It doesn’t seam to affect how much fluid leaks out.

I can’t find any good information online about what I need to look for, what I should be replacing or if maybe something is just loose that needs to be tightened.

Please Help!

The picture attached is from this morning where the leaking is a little less than what it has been but it pools up then leaks down next to the ignition.

The bike is a 2016 KTM 690 Enduro R

Ok I have 2 questions regarding my 2016 KTM 690 Enduro R.

Firstly- What is the best way to color match the clear screen on my CNC fairing to the Smokey KTM one previously installed

Second- I installed a lowering link and now the kickstand puts the bike in a fairly upright position. Ideally it would be an inch or two shorter…… what’s the best way to go about achieving that? The link is not permanent so eventually reusing a stock one would be easy enough when the time comes.

Thanks in advance. I’m new to Reddit as a whole so if I should be posting this elsewhere please let me know. 🤙🏼
