My Old rag hike - a summary

Hi good people, a few weeks ago I posted about trying the old rag and just wanted to give a short update.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ShenandoahPark/s/cmsfJvkvrA

So first and foremost alot of thanks for all the helpful comments it was truly an amazing and unique hike, loved the view and the challenge of the rock scramble was simply perfect, I really felt like a mountaineer.

I was so stocked when I reached the top! Old rag really lived up to the hype.

The descend was also beautifull, but the ascend takes all the prices. It was hard, but doable and I expect you could temper it by changing you pacing, but I would emphasize I considered to be a test of my endurance.

Some practical details most for others who contemplate this hike:

I started going up at 7:45 and was down again by 13:00ish, I had a long break at the summit but otherwise did it with minimum breaks.

The footing was loose and uneven so I was very, very happy for the excellent traction my boots provided.

I brought a gallon fluid and a good sandwich but only drank 50 Oz and didnt eat the packed sandwich, I think this was in part because the morning was cool and the descend was quite windy as the day was very hot.

During the rockscramble you have to literally climb rocks and boulders I was struggling a little because I felt drained for energy, but after I drank the gatorade I brought along my energy returned, so if it was the electrolytes or rhe sugar or both I dont know - but I was like drinking a magic potion, so highly recommended.

The wind on the top was insane, I had brought a windbreaker with me, that was the only time I used it, but glad to have it at that point.

What is the most unhinged climate morality take you have heard and would follow?

Just some examples I have heard IRL or here on reddit, in no particular order or unhingedness - not trying to make fun of anyone with my "unhinged" part of the title, but I really think the discussion can broaden our all perspectice when you share the most unhinged hinged thing you still chose to adhere to.

Dont use a car it is immoral to go anywhere you legs could take you, and if your legs can't take you consider if you need to go there or use public transport.

Dont eat meat and only eat locally sourced goods it is immoral to eat meat or goods that needs to be transported any significant distances.

Dont gets kids it is immoral to further burden the planet with more humans.

Dont buy stuff, it is immoral to spend money on anything fabricated if you could buy it secondhand.

Dont take it easy it is immorral not to dedicate every ounce of energy for making the world a better place.

Dont extend your life with medication your are a burden to the planet as it is already.

Minor edit to try to emphasize this is actually a serious question.

Making a large PD 3.x powerbank using older powerbanks.

Hi so I have several older 10-20ah powerbank but they are individually only capable of 5v 2A charging.

I know some electronics, and a little about lipo batteries but not an expert.

I dont really use the powerbanks as they charge my stuff to slow, so I was contemplating to upcycle them to a large capacity powerbank, a PD supported 20v output would be the dream as I could then charge a laptop.

To.make it simple I wanted to put all the cells in prallel on a bus with small value resistors to reduce max current draw. But is that project reasonable achievable to boost to a PD 3 compliant delivery.

Is there a point to the high end inserts in packaging of hunting cartridges

I was basically wondering what caused the manufacturers to use the very nice deluxe spacers you get with hunting cartridges, they all do it attached is a picture of some cheap S&B FMJ training rounds and their 3x price hunting rounds.

I can functionally understand there needs to be a spacer to protect soft ballistic tips from getting scratched up - but it is never just a cardboard dividerer, but always something more nice.

The 5 pieces from S&B can be easy to grab and bring in the hunt but sakos is all 20 in a plastic row so they dont really provide that benefit.

Is there more to it or is it just for premium feel to justify prices, because all the competitors do it or something I completely miss?

How to keep prices down for food and boarding on a roadtrip

Hi just looking for tips.

Family of 4 going for a 3w roadtrip in central europe next year in the high season we are travilling to see the countrysides so we are avoiding major cities.

So insights into how to keep proces down when looking for somewhere to sleep, must have toilets and baths but otherwise anything is possible, experience with bringing tents, motels and only booking ad hoc same day etc.

We will undoubtedly buy some meals along the way, but in general we will aim for it to be selfmade and hopefully budget friendly meals - although we dont want to live of oatmeal 24/7, we dont expect ot be able to keep food cold in a refrigerator so what have you done? What cooking gear have you brought?

Input to how to roadtrip Europe on a minimal budget

Hi all,

Any inputs to how to do a shoestring roadtrip, both budget wise and how it panned out in practice e.g. or how your day looked it as we are open to suggestions.

The details:

Me and wife was contemplating a 3w cross Europe roadtrip in car, including 2 girls (tweens).

We had a thousand things planned to see and would rely on hostels/B&b etc for sleeping, but open for tent, but clean toilets and baths would be something we wouldnt like to cut out.

Food can be simple meals which requires no cooking or could be made on our camping stoves (gasgrill, trangia and gasburner) to cover most meal.

We havent really set our plane in stone, but the general gist that we would divide driving into even bits and loop from route roughly following Copenhagen to Berlin, Prague, Salzburg, Venice, Milano, and then return through Bern, Basel and some cities yet to be decided on the return loop but we expect hem to cover France, Belgium and Netherlands with a few nights each stop.

Note we dont intend to necessarily visit all of these cities it was just to give an idea of the route as these cities are close to what we want to see if relevant.

AITAH for telling someone they could technically undo his birth

Hi,

So Jumping straight into it.

I was at a party at the weekend where Matt was present. Matt is not my friend, I know him well due to overlapping social circles, but we dont hang out privately and to be honest I find him exhausting.

Matt is a 34yo and his entire persona seems to be how his life is shit and everything conspire to put him down and he lives to talk, it is just constant negativity coming from him - cant recall he ever said something positive.

e.g. he can go on at lenghts about how he hate his boss, coworkers job - how he does everything and noone appreciates him and similiar grievances.

I happen to know one of his collegues and she told me he is on an improvement plan and does no work just hover around other collegues telling them how much he is doing while being at week 2 for a 3 day task.

The info is more for context to understand what type he is.

So at rhe party me and some friends were talking at the topics was about parents in general and the expecation from them for us to come home at Xmas (instead of them coming to us).

Matt then comes from the sideline and invites himself to the conversation with a major tirade about how his parent was shit and had not supported him and was the reason his life was hard and so forth so he was not going to home for Xmas.

A guy said something, cant recall what but Matt said his had done the bare minimum they had to, he owed them nothing and no gratitude because he had not asked to be born it was their decision.

It was just so cringe so we started to laugh and he got upset and demanded to hear what we where laughing about.

This is my AITA moment as replied that talking about not asking to be born is beyound cringe from someone who isnt 14 - he was an adult and had full control to revert that decision if he really wanted to.

Matt just shut up and got red in the face and left.

Apparently Matt has been talking shit about me and telling how I embarrassed and humiliated him, and unbelievably horrible to him and told him to unalive himself to some of our friends who relayed it to me.

I have just responded to the group chat that I learned I upset Matt, but Matts sensitivities and my humor is clearly poor match so we should probably give each other space at parties.

AITAH?
