Update on the toad who we think got into Raid

He recovered a LOT but sort of hit a plateau because he was terrified of us and wouldn’t move or eat. So at our vet’s advice, we released him. I built him a toad shelter but he didn’t stay long and hopped off to his life in our backyard full of leaves and logs. I haven’t seen him since but I hope he is living his best toady life. Thank you everyone for your kind words. Most of you were very supportive and understanding.

Two kinds of Medicare QMB?

I live in Alabama and my partner is disabled. Their new insurance and QMB kick in on August 1st. Everyone has told us there are two kinds of QMBs--one that only pays $20 doctor copays and nothing else, and one that pays everything. They all say we can't find out which one my partner got until Monday, August 3rd.

If we get the only-$20-copay QMB, we will be out an additional $500 a month with the higher Out of Pocket max and we will be financially screwed. Absolutely no one can give me any info as to how prepared I need to be for this possibility. Everywhere I look online says there is no such thing as a QMB that only pays doctor's office copays. But every medical professional in our life insists on it.

Does anyone know if this is real?

Books that changed your life as a teen

Long story short, my friend (due to absolutely no fault of anyone) unexpectedly and tragically lost her young daughter who was adopted and had some physical disabilities. The local foster closet, which provides free clothes/school supplies/etc, has given us use of one of their buildings and we will be opening a library for foster kids (and kids in the community) in her daughter’s memory.

It will have plenty of books (returning the books is optional), weekly or monthly storytimes, and a space for kids to draw/color/play games. We have received several large grants, piles of donations, and also have an Amazon wish list of books, but YA is very much underrepresented on our list.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there any former foster youth here who had a book really speak to them? What book changed your life as a teen? The neighborhood the library is going in is predominantly POC so I especially want characters who reflect that. Also maybe some books to help kids in foster care feel seen or books they can relate to. I already have classics on our list like The Hunger Games, Chaos Walking, some Neal Shusterman books, The Book Thief, etc.

Suggestions for lighthearted comfort shows

My partner is disabled/chronically ill and about to have a tough procedure. They’re gonna be in a ton of pain and unfortunately this has lined up with them being without a show as they just finished one.

They have binged and loved Derry Girls, Reservation Dogs, The Good Place, and BBC Ghosts. Nothing heavy or too serious, they also don’t like a ton of sex or romance unless it’s really sweet. They have emetophobia or I would set them up with Our Flag Means Death (I feel like someone throws up in every episode lol).

Any recs on a character-centered, funny, lighthearted show with a lot of sweet moments like the ones I just mentioned?

She laid an egg, pooped on it, and walked away

Also I know she’s a Pekin but someone dumped a flock a long time ago and now they all live wild at the park.

Accidentally overdosed my bird

Before I go any further with this post, HE IS ALIVE AND WELL. In January 2025, my cockatiel was prescribed meloxicam for arthritis in his wing. (He is now 21 years old.) The prescription bottle said 0.1 cc daily, so that is what we gave him. I continued to order in refills and pick them up at the vet when he ran out and no one at the office ever said anything. My partner is the one who doses his meds and said ordinarily the bottles said 0.1, but every now and then one would say 0.01 and they would think that was a mismark because it’s such a tiny amount. I also want to note that we have an amazing exotic vet who has treated all our animals so well.

No one ever said anything until now 17 months later when I called in a refill, the vet office called me back and asked how much I was giving him. I said 0.1, like it says on the bottle. They all grew very concerned and even had my vet get in contact with me and she said she was extremely concerned and that his prescription is 0.01 cc and that I was giving him 10 times the safe amount. She said she double checked all their records and nothing said 0.1 but I KNOW most of his prescription labels on the bottle said 0.1–I’ve seen them all myself and my partner mantains this, too.

I should note that all this time, my bird has been happy, healthy, goofy, hungry, even has playful moments, begs me for my food, etc. just normal senior tiel behavior. He sleeps a LOT but I chalked that up to being 21 years old and surviving a stroke in November 2024. But I feel like an absolute massive piece of shit and that my vet will think I’m a horrible person who shouldn’t have my animals. I can’t believe I gave him 10 times the safe dose. I am literally in disbelief that I could have killed him and that he’s apparently been high as a kite this whole time. I am cutting his dose to 0.01 immediately but he looks happy and healthy as you can see by the photo which I took just moments ago. I asked my vet what long term damage I should expect. They haven’t answered yet and I know he’s 21 but what if I took years off his life.

I’m not sure why I’m posting this except to vent how horrible and responsible I feel.
