Shoe garland hung on MP Archuna’s portrait

A portrait of MP Archuna was found adorned with a shoe garland in Jaffna, a symbolic act often used to express public disapproval.

The banner reportedly described him as "Arjuna Rajapaksha Eena Piravi", with "Eena Piravi" being a derogatory Tamil term that roughly translates to "degenerate" or "despicable person."

The incident comes shortly after Archuna praised Rajapaksa at a recent public function, drawing criticism from sections of the Tamil community. Many are viewing the shoe garland and the wording on the banner as a direct response to those remarks.

Political protest or personal insult where should the line be drawn?

The Rajapaksas have faced countless allegations over the years, yet not a single major case has resulted in a conviction.

Does this mean the accusations lacked evidence from the start , or have they simply been able to use political influence and legal loopholes to avoid accountability?

Also, recent gestures and public behavior by Yoshitha Rajapaksa have struck some people as unusually confident, almost as if he has little concern about legal consequences.

Do such gestures tell us something about confidence in the Sri Lankan legal system, or are people reading too much into them?

What do you think?

Hi Mods,

The images attached to this post are publicly available photos taken after Yoshitha Rajapaksa was released on bail. They are included solely to discuss his public demeanor and gestures following his court appearance, not to make any claims about guilt or innocence.

The post is intended to encourage discussion about public perception, accountability, and confidence in the legal system.

Fitbit Charge 6 - Paid Premium for a Half-Baked Device

I need to vent because I've been dealing with this for weeks and I'm genuinely baffled by how many basic things just don't work on this device.

  • Music Controls - Embarrassing Half the time it can't even connect to my music app. And it's not a phone issue - Bluetooth drops randomly even when I'm sitting still with my phone in my pocket. I've re-paired it more times than I can count. This is a $160 device that can't reliably maintain a Bluetooth connection.
  • Google Maps Navigation - Completely Broken This one genuinely baffles me. Notifications are ON. Location permissions are ON. Google Maps is open on my phone. Directions are actively running. The watch just stares at me and says "Please open the app." What do you think I just did? I literally have to wonder if this feature works for anyone, or if it's just shipped as vaporware.
  • GPS - What GPS? I've seen people say the GPS is "slow to acquire." Mine just doesn't work. Workouts that should have a route just... don't. At this price point, GPS is a baseline expectation, not a bonus feature. We need to acrry the phone always.
  • The EDA Sensor is a Gimmick I was excited about stress monitoring. What I got was: press and hold the sensor for a guided breathing exercise. That's not stress monitoring, that's a breathing app that requires me to manually activate it and sit still. My Fitbit isn't tracking my stress - it's waiting for me to already know I'm stressed and then ask me to calm down. Completely useless for real-world passive stress tracking.
  • Auto-Exercise Detection - Selective at Best Basic stuff like walking? Sure, it catches that. But weight lifting? Half my sessions go untracked. Other exercises? Hit or miss. I'm manually logging things I paid a premium to have automatically detected.

The bottom line: Basic activity tracking works. Everything else — the stuff they actually market this device on -is either broken, half-finished, or a downgrade from what the feature description implies.

Is anyone else dealing with this, or did I just get a lemon? And has Fitbit said anything about fixing the Maps navigation? That one alone is infuriating.

A researcher named Sanjana Hattotuwa studied Facebook posts between May and June this year and found some pretty unusual patterns around the campaign defending the former spy chief.

Something interesting came up while looking into the Suresh Sallay case in Sri Lanka.

A researcher named Sanjana Hattotuwa studied Facebook posts between May and June this year and found some pretty unusual patterns around the campaign defending the former spy chief.

Out of 7695 posts from 1233 unique accounts, 3236 of them which is 42 percent were word for word copy pastes. Another 1539 of those same posts appeared across multiple different account owners. One single account posted 87 near identical messages within a 5 minute window. A page called Save Mother Lanka spammed the same text 65 times in under a day and another narrative 68 times over two days.

Before June 3rd there were roughly 36 posts a day about Sallay. After a court issued a travel ban on Gotabaya Rajapaksa that day the numbers exploded. June 7th saw 1174 posts. June 8th hit 1886. By June 10th after the minister told parliament that Sallay had directed the Easter attacks the daily rate hit 1112 posts, which is 31 times the original baseline.

Total engagement across all posts reached 3224882 reactions, 620087 comments and 424522 shares.

Namal Rajapaksa personally showed up to a protest for Sallay and posted about it publicly making the political link hard to deny.

The scale:

  • 7695 total posts from 1233 accounts between May 12 and June 10
  • 6737 posts were in Sinhala, 270 in English, 67 in Tamil

Signs it was coordinated:

  • 3236 posts (42%) were exact copy paste duplicates
  • 1539 posts appeared across multiple different accounts
  • One account posted 87 near identical posts in 5 minutes
  • Save Mother Lanka page posted same text 65 times in one day and another message 68 times in two days
  • A mobilisation message appeared 13 times across 5 accounts within a 2 minute window

How fast it grew:

  • Before June 3 court order: 36 posts per day
  • After court implicated Gotabaya: 827 posts per day (23x jump)
  • After minister said Sallay directed the attacks: 1112 posts per day (31x jump)
  • June 8 alone had 1886 posts in a single day

Total engagement:

  • 48% of reactions

Is Sallay Above the Law? Because It's Starting to Look That Way

Does Dayasiri really think the public doesn't understand what's going on?Could it not become contempt of court?

I believe everyone, regardless of their position, should be subject to the rule of law. If a court makes a lawful request, it should be respected.

What is especially troubling is the claim that a personal computer contains intelligence secrets so sensitive that it cannot be examined. If that is true, then it raises even more serious questions about judgment, accountability, and security protocols. Why was such highly classified information stored on a personal device in the first place? How could that be considered acceptable?

With football season coming up, I was remembering when we had a dedicated local sports channel. What actually happened to CSN? Is it still operating at all?

Chemmani Mass Grave Reaches 327 - Could It Become Sri Lanka's Largest?

The Chemmani mass grave excavation has now identified 327 human skeletons, with 311 fully exhumed, including 8 infants in the latest phase.

This brings renewed attention to a 1998 testimony by Sri Lankan Army Lance Corporal Somaratne Rajapakse, who alleged that 300–400 bodies were buried at Chemmani. He later assisted investigators in identifying alleged burial sites, and Amnesty International reported concerns for his safety following his testimony.

(Source: Amnesty International, ASA 37/016/1999 — https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/asa37/016/1999/en/)

Chemmani is currently considered Sri Lanka’s second-largest mass grave, behind Mannar (\\\~376 remains). If current excavations surpass that number, Chemmani could become the largest mass grave discovered in Sri Lanka.

What’s striking is how closely the current findings are aligning with the original 1998 allegation.

327 found and counting. The excavation is still ongoing.

The remains are believed to represent Tamil civilians allegedly killed during the Sri Lankan military's reoccupation of Jaffna between 1995 and 1996. These weren't combatants , they were civilians who disappeared after military checkpoints and never came home.

Somaratne Rajapaksha confessed from the dock of Colombo High Court Year 1999 : "Almost every evening, dead bodies were brought there and the soldiers were asked to bury them.

Why do some politicians suddenly get hospitalized when investigations or court proceedings start closing in?

I'm not saying every illness is fake, but the timing often raises questions. Psychologically, could this be a form of avoidance coping escaping immediate pressure while gaining sympathy and buying time?

A hospital bed can change the narrative from "What are they being investigated for?" to "How is their health?" Critics look insensitive, supporters become protective, and legal processes get delayed.

Is this genuine stress-induced illness, strategic self-preservation, or a mix of both? Curious to hear your thoughts.

Chemmani Mass Grave Reaches 302 - Could It Become Sri Lanka’s Largest?

Cultural respect or social pressure? Bowing to monks in Sri Lankan politics

In Sri Lanka, it’s very common to see politicians publicly bowing or showing deep respect to Buddhist monks and other religious figures.

But I wonder what happens if someone chooses not to do it. Is it seen as disrespect, or even interpreted as being against religion? Could it lead to social backlash?

I don’t feel comfortable bowing my head before someone ,At the same time, when everyone else is doing it, there’s also social pressure and a question of self-respect.

I’m not trying to disrespect anyone’s beliefs I’m just trying to understand where cultural respect ends and personal freedom begins.

Would be interested to hear different views.

45 Years Later: No Justice for the Burning of the Jaffna Library?

The Jaffna Public Library was burned in 1981 May 31st to june 1st midnight, destroying nearly 100,000 books and priceless manuscripts for no legitimate reason.

During the violence, senior UNP politicians and government figures, including Ranil Wickremesinghe, were in Jaffna. The attack has long been linked to government supporters and members of the Sri Lankan police.

Forty-five years later, no one has been prosecuted. If key government figures were present in Jaffna at the time, why was there no accountability? What does this say about Sri Lanka's justice system?

How is a separate court for Buddhist clergy even justified?

How the hell does it make sense to have a separate court system for Buddhist clergy? How are they any different from ordinary citizens of Sri Lanka when it comes to criminal law?

If monks commit crimes like rape, murder, spreading racism, or even smuggling cannabis, why should they get “special treatment” through courts connected to the clergy itself? It just feels like a system designed to protect them rather than deliver justice fairly.

What confidence can ordinary people have in the justice system if some groups can avoid normal legal consequences through separate courts or internal processes? Won’t every religious community eventually ask for its own special court too?

This whole thing sounds like a joke. A country cannot claim equality before the law while allowing certain groups to handle criminal matters within systems influenced by their own religious hierarchy. Justice should be the same for everyone, regardless of religion or status.
