first time renting

Hey! First-time renter here 🥹 Would you guys recommend renting a cheaper place where heat and electricity aren’t included but is $1,110, or paying more for an all-inclusive apartment $1400+ in gatineau?

I see a lot of rentals that seem cheaper but don’t include utilities, and I’m wondering if I’m missing something. Which option usually ends up being cheaper in the long run, especially during winter?

What are the pros and cons of each? I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Please be nice, I’m still learning! 😊

first and last month rent

Hey everyone! I recently found out that it’s illegal in gatineau QC for a landlord to require first and last month’s rent or a security deposit when renting an apartment.

My building was built in 2026, so I’m guessing the landlord involved was new to the process since he didnt know anything about the building, etc.

When I applied, he told me I had to pay the last two months’ rent as a “deposit” because I had no credit history and it was my first time renting. At the time I didn’t know any better, but doesn’t a deposit when leasing usually mean you get it back? 😅

In the end, I asked if I could just do first and last month’s rent instead (like they do in Ottawa), and he agreed.

On my first rent day, I paid the first month’s rent by e-transfer because they said the automatic bank withdrawal wasn’t working. The next day, he messaged me saying to also send the last month’s rent by e-transfer “to fulfill the deposit condition for the lease.”

The “last month’s rent” requirement is also written into my lease that he made all the people in the building rewrite 3 times after every little mistake he did.

So I guess my question is: is this okay? Should I just leave it alone to keep a good relationship with my landlord, or should I contact the TAL and ask to have the money returned?

Also, another thing that happened is my landlord entered my apartment only giving me a 2 minute voicemail message and not giving me the required 24 hours’ notice.
Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any advice would be appreciated!

landlord entering unit

Hey everyone, correct me if I’m wrong, but this situation really weirded me out.

A few days ago around 8–9am, my landlord called me and left a voicemail saying they needed access to my apartment to open the main water valves for the sprinkler system installation. In the voicemail he said something like:

“I looked and it doesn’t seem like you’re home, so I’ll let myself in, open the valve, and lock the door behind me.”

First of all… what do you mean you “looked”? 😭

Second, isn’t a landlord supposed to give at least 24 hours notice before entering unless it’s an emergency? This wasn’t an emergency from what I understand.

What made me really uncomfortable is that I actually WAS home and I was asleep. He opened the door & only rang the bell after realizing I was there when he saw me sleeping.

I live alone as a girl, so the whole thing honestly made me feel super unsafe and uncomfortable. Like what if I was changing or sleeping half naked or something?

Am I overreacting or is this actually not okay?

UPDATE: i texted him made it clear that i was uncomfortable and would need a 24hour notice next time for non-emergency situations

he apologized and said he didnt know where the valve was in the unit

ill forgive for now 🙏

hey my fellow gatineau cat owners i just have a question.

a week ago i bought the 48 pack whiskas cat food instead of the 24 pack i usually buy. but i used 4 serving packs from it and my cat throws up from it everytime for some reason and this is the brand ive been giving to her ever since i got her.

the liquid inside of the servings looks chunky instead of watery too. seems expired.

before i make a 30mins walk to my nearest walmart, i wanted to ask if would i be able to return it if i used 4 packs from it?

anyone had a similar experience? i dont wanna walk there just for them to refuse me a refund or exchange atleast
