Avoid this Edit Hotel: Hotel Proper SF (a lesson learned about the edit)

Editing to say this was a more controversial take than I thought. It wasn't my personal best stay in SF. I preferred the palace or st Regis on prior trips. But TLDR maybe do a street view "walk" before booking to make your own call on this one because some people seem to love this place despite it not feeling like a typical edit properly to me.

Original but follows :

I should know better but I've gotten lazy about just booking whatever edit hotel has the best point conversion. This week I was in a rush an panic booked the Proper Hotel in SF for what felt like a "too good to be true" rate. And it is. The room & hotel are ok (not great - kind of lipstick on a pig imo) but it's right at the edge of the tenderloin. (historically not a great area) Would not stay or recommend this one.

So all that to say don't get sucked into the trap of thinking the edit is actually some sort of curated list. Too good to be true IS probably just that. And do your own research (duh).

OK explain it to me like I'm 5 (US citizens in the EU and saving and investing)

I've read snippets here and there that US citizens living in the EU saying they keep all their money in the US and transfer only what's needed to live in the EU.

Plus something something something about investing in Europe loses ground because of fatca.

Our scenario is of course a little complicated

I will be a regular employee of a German company

My husband is a freelancer (Freiberufler) as a lawyer practicing in the US

We own a small business in the US

We own a home in the US and will collect rent which will mostly be offset by expenses.

We will of course consult with professionals for tax purposes but I want to make sure we make good choices with our money.

Venue for a casual party

Hello!

I'm looking for a location to host a casual party. I want it to be the kind of vibe where people can stop in and have a drink and a snack and say hi.

I want to do it at a restaurant or brewery. I want there to be a private/private-ish area we can take over and the ability to cater a few snack trays but nothing too complicated.

Prefer ballard or Phinney but open to anywhere North of the ship canal.

I expect 40-50 people but probably not all at the same time.

I don't have time or capacity to plan or clean up so not going to do picnic at a park or something like that.

All the venues I've done this at in the past have closed and I'm feeling a little uninspired. Thanks!

Edited answer a few questions :

-of course I expect to pay for a private /semi private room

  • my experience with catered parties is that the host usually doesn't clean up
  • timing is now ish

International Health Certificate Veterinarian

Hello,

Does anyone have experience with a local vet (preferably in Seattle) that has experience with the USDA international health certificate process? This is for a cat going to Germany.

I did Google of course but I'd love a recommendation by someone who has actually gone through the process since there are very tricky timing components.

Thanks!

Realistic Spousal Reunification Time line - US /DE Citizen

What is the realistic Spousal Reunification timeline for a US citizen joining a DE citizen?

We are currently living in the US but planning to move to DE. Spouse is a dual citizen (US/DE).

My understanding of the process was that we could move together & get an apartment that allows for registration. Then my spouse registers, then I take his registration, our marriage certificate (appostiled), my passport, A1 language cert, and I should get a 3-4 year residency permit with full right to work.

I have heard of this going as quickly as a few weeks in Munich.

Well, I started sending resumes out "just in case" and am expecting an offer. During my conversations with the employer they suggested a start date of 1/1 because the visa could take 4-7 months. I probed a little because it doesn't seem like it should take quite so long for spousal reunification? I checked the registration appointments for the city of my potential employer and they are booking a few weeks out but nothing crazy. I am afraid the hiring manager will freak out at a 1/1 timeline and that's also not an ideal time to move by any stretch!

PSA: there is a coffee vendor van near the grove and front porch

You don't have to walk all the way over to the pivot for coffee. These guys have coffee and breakfast burritos!

Can you still bring empty water bottles in?

The last time I went to a show at the gorge you could bring in an empty hydration pack. I saw someone posted an article referencing the same rule recently but it also said you could bring your own chair which isn't allowed so I'm skeptical if that's still the case.

Anyone been recently and able to comment on if hydration packs or empty bottles are OK?

Tell me about life in Hannover

I'm interviewing with a company in Hannover as an international candidate. The hiring team seems extremely skeptical that I would actually choose to move there to the extent it's making me nervous!

I find this confusing because from my research it seems pretty ideal :

- Not a huge cultural hub like Munich or Berlin, but still a real city with all the things people who like cities look for.

- Well connected for travel

-excellent public transportation

- Green with lots of parks and nature

-Affordable

I'm too old to be looking for rowdy night life or constant high intensity stimulation of any type so a medium sized city appeals to me.

I do wonder if it will be hard to make friends as an immigrant. (I'm working hard to improve my German but not yet proficient.)

What am I missing? Will I hate Hannover for some unforseen reason?
