the bay is beautiful, but the amount of money required to live here comfortably is out of control. im ready to leave.
I live in the bay area and am very much ready to leave. I know california and the bay are exceptional, the weather is perfect year round, the produce, the politics, the job opportunities are great. however, i cant deal with the insane amount of wealth we are surrounded by anymore.
my husband and i are not in tech, but we have what should be decent salaries, yet it still feels like we are hustling for nothing. $2 million has become the norm for a home in Oakland, where we live. its like money has zero value here, but of course it does because even if you make $500k joint income it is still not enough to feel afloat, and we are renters, which i hate to admit i am becoming embarassed about since everyone around me owns a home.
Weve lived in Seattle, DC and NYC before. The lack of sun in seattle was challenging for my mental health. we both loved DC and NYC, but it would be nearly as expensive or more, so why not just stay in the bay. I lived in Milwaukee pre husband, the winters were rough, but maybe its different when you have a family?
we need a city/town that is racially diverse, my husband is a POC, a decent latino population would be ideal, politically leans blue, decent schools (we have a toddler), and nearish an international airport (we travel to visit family outside of the country twice a year).
Minneapolis and Chicago are on my mind. Are there other cities/towns i should consider that dont require you to have stock options from your employer to afford to buy a house or over $500k joint income to feel like you can afford life, including childcare for a toddler?
Edit: we cannot even afford a $1 million home. Excuse me for not saying that. Clearly if $500k isnt a comfortable life for us there are things life requires us to pay that others may not, parents, student loans, childcare.
