Retinal Detachment

I’m currently a 4th year med student, always wanted to go into a surgical subspecialty. I’m also a high myope so I was always at a risk for a detachment and then it just happened. Got surgery, it healed well but now I have another detachment; I’m afraid it’s going to be recurrent and I will have minimal to zero vision in one eye.

Should I still be looking into pursuing surgery or is it just a colossal waste considering the poor vision. Would I be better off doing a less intensive specialty like IM/FM? Would having poor vision make me a less competent doctor?

I’m at a loss here, would appreciate any and all advice!!

Retinal Detachment

I recently had an unexpected case of retinal detachment in one eye, high myopia (-8.00, -6.25) so I’ve always been at risk and it just happened.

Got my surgery, in recovery, extremely blurry vision, will remain so till I get the silicone oil removed in a couple months. I was planning on giving my step 1 in 6 months. This just completely broke my flow, I’m having trouble focusing for long periods of time.

I haven’t booked my exam yet. Should I keep the 6 month timeline or move it ahead knowing I’ll be having downtime again after the follow up surgery which will be while I’m in dedicated? Just completely lost here, would appreciate any advice

Hello I will be registering for MyIntealth and Step 1 soon from Pakistan. Been hearing that paying from a Pakistani debit card will have an additional tax (10-12%) and to preferably use a foreign card. I have the option of registering using an international card from the gulf (Saudi Arabia) as well.

Can anyone who has registered recently please fill me in on this?
