James Forrestal served as the countries first secretary of defence under President Harry S. Truman. On May 22nd, 1949, Forrestal commited suicide by jumping out of a sixteenth-floor window. Truman had fired him only two months prior.
JFK picking his own brother as Attorney General was ridiculous, right?
This doesn't get talked about enough. I genuinely think that's its one of the worst pieces of nepotism that the us federal government has ever seen.
If the Cuban missile crisis happened today the media would probably get bored of it by day four
I mean...thirteen days. Jesus. That's a long to keep checking the news.
Does America have the most interesting leaders of any nation?
I like the psychology aspect of it all. Forty five men, some rich, some poor, some ill, some healthy, each tackling the exact same thing - absolute power.
A child is born in 1880s Missouri. He spends his youth working on a farm alongside his father. By thirty three years old he is enlisted into the U.S. army and is sent to fight the germans. By sixty one years old he now wields, at his sole discretion, the literal power of the sun. His decision and his decision alone ends up determining the lives and deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, as well as setting the precedent for the total destruction of the planet earth.
In 1976, a spoilt nepo baby rich kid is pulled over by a police officer and is forced to read the alphabet backwards. He is taken into custody and charged with a DUI. Twenty five years later that same drunkard is seen giving a rousing speech while stood on top of a crumbled Manhattan skyscraper. All around him are the rubble submerged corpses of countless men, women, and children. He speaks of avenging their deaths.
In the county of Erie, New York, 1872, a condemned inmate stands waiting. Finally, a rope is placed around his neck and he is slowly walked up onto the gallows. The executioner mutters a few words of grace, looks the condemned inmate in the eyes, and pulls the lever. Patrick Morrisey falls, jolts, and is pronounced dead soon afterwards. He had been convicted of murdering his mother. Thirteen years pass and the executioner who had carried out his sentence, Sheriff Grover Cleveland, is named President of the United States.
You don't get these kind of stories with prime ministers from my country. Most have interesting lives, sure, but I always find them to be a bit "samey". Here, someone like Andrew Johnson, a former indentured servant, or Andrew Jackson, a former child solider, would never be elected MP let alone Prime Minister. Their pasts wouldn't allow it full stop.
Michael Douglas | 1945 - 1963
" Michael Dutton "Mike" Douglas was not only a student at Robert E. Lee High School in Midland, Texas, but he was one of the school's biggest football and track stars. At one point, he had received a broken neck during a football game.
His young and promising life was tragically cut short by an injury received in an automobile accident. During the evening hours, he was driving south towards downtown Midland when as he took the right-of-way at the intersection of Farm Road & State Highway 349, another car sped past a stop sign and collided into the side of his car. Despite being quickly removed from his vehicle, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Midland Memorial Hospital at 8:55 P.M.
The driver of the car, Laura Welch, was both a close friend & fellow classmate of Mike. She would go on to become the wife & First Lady of George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States. "
If Hinckley had successfully assassinated Reagan the conspiracy theories would have been ten times worse than JFK
IIRC The Hinckley family had direct financial ties to George H.W. Bush - the one man in america who stood to gain from his boss getting shot and killed just two months after taking office. That coupled with Bush being a literal former CIA director (who also claimed not to know where he was the day JFK got murdered lol) would have made the whole Lee Harvey Oswald thing look like child's play comparatively.
For the record, no, I don't think that George Bush orchestrated the shooting of Ronald Reagan. I'm just saying that it would have 100% bred a new level of paranoia otherwise unseen throughout american history. If there's anyone out there who can credibily be called a "deep state spook" its George Hebert Walker Bush lmao.
Second to Reagan, I also think that if Gerald Ford had been shot and killed by Squeeky Frome the ensuing conspiracy theories would also have been off the charts what with the whole MKULTRA-Manson connection. But that's something else entirely. (Again, I don't believe that the CIA attempted to use a manchurian candidate against Gerald Ford. I'm just saying that the theories would have been fun to discuss while six beers deep.)
TIL about Enrico Prado, a CIA operative who worked on the original Bin Laden Task Force prior to 9/11. Before joining the agency, Prado is alledged to have been employed as a hitman for the Cuban mafia.
reddit.comProfessor Robert D. Little - alledged accomplice of serial killer Larry Eyler - accused of ordering the deaths of two potential witnesses | Does anyone have more information on this?
I have to admit that up untill today I had very little knowledge of Larry Eyler and his crimes, but after doing some more research it now seems that this whole thing is a much larger rabbit hole than his wiki page lets on. If Eyler's confession is true, Professor Little has to be one of the most highly educated/high society serial killers on record.
Meet Claude Jones, the 152nd and final inmate to have been executed under George W. Bush's tenure as Governor of Texas. The DNA evidence which saw him be condemed (a strand of hair) was later discovered to have belonged someone else entirely.
Why do Democrats keep nominating CIA candidates?
The current dem governor of Virginia was a CIA operative responsible for orchestrating the war on drugs. Prior to the rape allegations, the dem nominee for Governor of Maine, Graham Platner, was a literal Blackwater mercenary. Senator Elissa Slotkin of New York worked for Israel during the war on terror during the 2000s... I feel like the Dem's have a lot to answer for in this regard. How best do we combat you in this area? If we let your lot win in November the next thing we know we will all be dosed up to high heaven in LSD and jumping out of hotel windows. These are the stakes here, folks.
Obviously, I am being facetious, but does this not bother anyone else? My party, the Republicans, have a lot of problems, but the one thing we're good at is avoiding the military industrial complex. For all of Trump's many, many flaws he is assuring that all the grubby arms dealers of america are not all over Ukraine right now reaping their particular brand of mayhem and misery.
TIL Jimmy Carter openly called Bill Clinton corrupt. Speaking of Clinton's controversial pardon of Marc Rich, Carter stated "I don't think there is any doubt that some of the factors in his pardon were attributable to his large gifts. In my opinion, that was disgraceful."
abcnews.comDo you think that there has ever been a true sociopath president?
Obviously the vast majority of presidents have psychopathic traits, but even the most particularly "evil" ones like Jackson and (Andrew)Johnson seemed to have at least some ideological beliefs about america that kept them teathered to reality. Has anyone ever successfully sought the office of president for the purpose of power and power alone?
I feel like Dexter doesn't work as an anti-hero - like at all.
I mean, on a numerical level, he has objectively saved more lives than he has ended. Thats a fact, right? Plus it is not even like he tortures his victims or anything nor does he derive sexual pleasure from the act of killing. On both a professional and social level he is arguably more well adjusted than even a none-serial killer could ever hope for.
After watching all eight seasons I've come to the conclusion that Dexter Morgan is probably an overall better person than I am. Even the "innocent" photographer that he killed in season three was arguably a rapist in his own right.
This series could have been so great if the writing was even half-way competent. I have always felt like Dexter's character should have significantly regressed as his murder-addiction worsened throughout the seasons. Start by having him exclusively take out other killers and end it with him killing car thieves/drug dealers. Like an alcoholic running out of champagne and resulting to mouth wash instead.
George McGovern's daughter, Teresa McGovern, froze to death in a snow embankment while intoxicated. She had struggled with alcoholism all her life.
MCGOVERN'S DAUGHTER FOUND DEAD (1994)
Teresa ``Terry'' McGovern, a daughter of 1972 presidential candidate George McGovern who often shared the public spotlight with him, was found dead in the snow after years of struggle with alcoholism.
The 45-year-old woman had been receiving treatment at a Madison detoxification center, her father said.
An autopsy showed she died of ``hypothermia due to exposure while in a state of acute alcohol intoxification,'' said Dane County Coroner Ray Wosepka. Her body was found Tuesday behind a dilapidated building in a seedy neighborhood.
Ms. McGovern's blood-alcohol level was 0.339 percent, Wosepka said. A blood-alcohol content of 0.10 is considered evidence of intoxication under Wisconsin law.
In a telephone interview from his home in Washington on Wednesday, McGovern said his daughter had drinking problems for years.
``I think she was powerless to control it,'' the former U.S. senator from South Dakota said. ``It isn't that she didn't try to overcome it. If you're not one of the few lucky ones who can control it, you die.''
One week earlier, Ms. McGovern was found passed out in a snowbank just a block away. She was taken to the Dane County Detoxification Center.
She had lived in Madison for most of the last 15 years, her father said. The McGoverns have three other daughters and a son.
She was not married but had two daughters, Marian, 9, and Colleen, 7, who live in Madison with their father, Raymond Frey, said a sister, Ann McGovern of Washington. Frey said they had been separated for about eight years and Ms. McGovern visited her children ``very sporadically.''
McGovern said he had visited Madison in March to help his daughter get settled in a new apartment.
Recently, however, she had been staying with friends and looking for another residence, and police said she had no permanent address.
McGovern, a Democrat, recalled how she worked tirelessly in his unsuccessful presidential campaign against Richard Nixon.
``She wasn't a public person, but she was very active,'' he said, adding that she spoke at rallies ``all over the country'' and appeared on television talk shows on his behalf.
What would the U.S. response be to the Soviet Union shooting Richard Nixon out of the sky ?
Was it not ridiculously easy to get away with crimes during the 20th century?
I apologise for the morbid question, but as someone who has only ever experienced the 21st century, I find the lack of CCTV/forensic ability present in the 20th century absolutely insane to think about. If I hit my head and suddenly gained homicidal tendencies what was it exactly stopping me from taking a gun, walking into a city centre at night, and shooting the first homeless tramp I saw? How would the police have any remote chance of catching me? Surely all that you would have do to get away with your crime of choosing was to put on a pair of glasses, a hat, and a nondescript t-shirt? Gloves, too, if you're feeling particularly nervous.
Obviously I have no desire to commit murder but I do kind of bemoan the fact that I never got to live in a time where you could just...get away with things. I feel like the ability to commit crimes relatively consequence free was, in itself, an innate human liberty. You ever wonder why historical texts were so obsessed with discussing morals? Because once upon a time you had to actually put those morals to the test. Now we're just barn animals locked away in a pen of our creation. Still, less chance of me getting shot I suppose.
