Knee extending past foot when lunging

Is it really necessary (from a technique and injury perspective) that your knee shouldn't extend past the knees? I have heard many coaches point this out for how it not only helps you keep balance, but also recover faster for remise/reprise opportunities. Also good for an injury perspective for not putting too much strain.

I've always had trouble with balance when lunging and many of it comes from knee overextending. If I keep my back straight sometimes it will be too straight and it leads to a leaning back motion which is bad in the middle as a saberist.

Footwork translating into actual bouts

Is it just me or that learning footwork sometimes doesn’t translate as well into actual bouts. Like in theory when we do it with no opponent, it’s always fairly straightforward. But when it times to come to the actual bout, where there are constant distance and tempo changes, it’s hard to apply what you actually learned and you resort back to your old habits?

Absolute zero confidence

When there if there’s a clear gap in skill, footwork, timing, etc my mental gets foggy and I autopilot. Pretty much every time in the middle I just guess and pray it works. I think about how stupid I look from a perspective of someone watching.

I have a fencing camp coming up and I kinda regret signing up for the first place. When I moved back to my home country for the summer, I attended a local club thinking I would improve somewhat. Besides physicals and facing new opponents, I feel that I have no improvement in actual bouts. I go once a week and some days I think of making it two, but the language/cultural barrier gets me.

Well I’m only 11 months in, and others have fenced for years, probably before they were teens. Now I know I shouldn’t worry too much 11 months in, but I’m wondering how to deal with this mental block.

What makes each country’s fencing styles different?

For example, a prominent one is Korean saber. Before that fencers used to have their feet grounded as much as possible, but the Koreans introduced bouncy movements and athleticism that changed the game. I would also say France’s style (entirely based on my knowledge through clips, so not 100% objective) , they have a very upright stance, cuts everywhere, and staccato footwork.

LI, BUHE for Accounting Information Systems

Has anyone had any recent classes with him before? He's a TA and looks like has taught some other classes before in the business school. Looking to see if anyone has any experience of him regarding this class or the class is general (to me, the class sounds like comp apps but for accounting majors).

Fencing shoes for gym floors (no piste)

I have actual fencing shoes (fencing star) but I’m pretty sure it’s specifically designed for the piste and not the hardwood gym floor. I noticed that it became very slippery after a practice or two. For those reason, I’m thinking of using regular indoor sports shoes like ASICS gel rockets, pickleball/badminton shoes, and etc. What did you guys think? I’m particularly interested in the gel rockets since they’re inexpensive and also a club mate has them.

What do you do after getting your license (car)

I went to a driving school and passed, but moreso how to pass the test rather than learn how to drive. I thought those who hold a learners permit aka new drivers can only drive on roads designated by authorities and is also limited by the time of day (I know you get fined if caught but I'm not sure how enforced that is?) Anyway I thought about practicing on some suburban or urban road. And obviously I will be refraining from highway.

Blue Gaunlet Mask Painting Service

Has anyone had a mask painting job done by BG? I’m considering getting a new mask but also want to paint it. Just wondering how their paint job is and if anybody has any experience with them. The design I’m planning is not overly complicated but just wondering about the paint they use or whatever

How to understand timing better in sabre on defense

On defense, my timing is really bad. I know the "perfect" time to launch your counterattack (stop cuts, counter-blockouts, etc.) is when your opponent is about to take a step towards you and/or their blade is at a relaxed position. Problem is, it's hard to see when that happens when you really only see the upper half of their body in first person view. Also that with better fencers, they go from 0 to 100 in speed very fluidly its hard to catch a timing. The times where I'm sucessfully be able to catch a timing is when they make some sort of hitch, but even the sometimes my brain sees it but theres a delay in my blade actually moving towards the target.

Does anybody at practice just sometimes forget how to fence

I swear I don’t even know why this happens exactly but at times but some practices I feel like a complete beginner. Footwork is very uniform with no variation, I tend to swing the whole blade, lunge is not as fluid. I might be overthinking my actions too much but I still don’t have a concrete reason.

Other times at practice I feel absolute livid. Footwork is smooth, bladework is small & precise, etc etc. I notice that there’s no lag in my decision making.

I fence sabre btw but I’m sure this applies to all weapons.

Mask fitting help

Had to buy a new temporary cheap mask because I left it overseas, and I noticed the fit was pretty snug. The mask itself fit my face but vertically if feels tight. It kinda clamps down on my chin and on the sides where my jawline is. Like it touches both sides of the cheek so sometimes accumulated sweat builds up a lot there and it gets very hot. The previous mask I used didn’t have any of this, it was slightly loose on the chin, but after using the back strap it’s not a problem. Never had a problem with it being snug on the lower cheek/jawline area either. Is this how it’s supposed to be?

Still confused about cutting technique in sabre

So I started about 8 months ago and I didn't have any coach help, just people at the club. Learned most of the stuff durings 2 hour bouts excluding very basics like en gaurde stance, advances, retreats, etc. Ever so recently, I think I've done the cutting motion wrong the entire time. I'm moreso using the wrist for the cutting motion Only realized I should be cutting with the fingers a few practices ago.

For the cutting motion with the fingers, is the "correct" way to sqeeze your other 3 fingers (middle, ring, and pinky while the thumb and index dictate which direction you want to cut? For example, I wanted to cut to the left, I would rotate my thumb and index to acting as a "pivot" before squeezing with the 3 fingers like a spray bottle? I've also heard other say squeeze with all 5.

Using only the metal tounge for mask

Reference

In competitions (non-FIE) are you allowed to not have the horizontal velcro (in red) on? I used to use my club's mask for practice nd it doesn't have the back strap. I honestly got used to it by only clamping down on the metal tounge (green) so it wouldn't be loose on my face. I also like how I can just slide the mask up easily to take a breather compared to the horizontal strap. I tried a new mask recently that has a horizontal strap and honestly it feels really uncomfortable, maybe because it hasn't molded to the shape of my face yet so I can't say for certain.

How is Will Morrill able to pull off this high pressure defense here

https://youtu.be/vEJ0QXY3zGc?si=dPA\_m6J-53Eo4E0x

Seen him do this a lot in his other matches but at 0:08 and 7:20 are great examples what I’m talking about. He pressures highlight leaning forward with the blade towards Homer, making it hard for him to get momentum/watch out for the counter.

By the looks of it it’s a combination of great agility and distance control? When Homer speeds up at 7:20 Morrill is able to retreat fast enough without getting overwhelmed. His distance also seems to be abit further than usual to make up for him leaning forward? Anyways I’m sure I’m missing a lot here like what line/where Morrill is trying to counter etc but just seeing what you guys think.

Meeting with advisor during summer?

Does anyone know if its possible to quickly meet with an advisor? I just have a really quick question about academic requirements that would take like 5 minutes max. I know during the regular semester they host drop-in times but do they even run/workl during the summer?

Allstar, Uhlmann or PBT?

Do you guys prefer to get your stuff from Allstate or Uhlmann? I fence Sabre at a uni and local club and pretty much everyone uses Allstar for lamés, masks, and blades. But lately I’ve heard that Allstar’s quality has decreased in the last 15 years, which led to be me being a bit hesitant on getting their gear. I also heard that Uhlmann is a nice alternative that other people and top fencers use. I think PBT is also a good budget option? Though I’ve never used their gear before.

I’m a bit biased currently since I use an Allstar glove which I love, but that’s pretty much the only equipment I own currently from them

2v2 teammates are not real

Genuinely how are these people the same trophy range as me? I thought that when I went from 6K to 10K trophies, people would actually you know… learn the core mechanics already. Tell me why they’re just sitting at 10 elixir leaking for 30 seconds. Placing troops directly at the bridge when you are on 0 elixir and praying you take down the whole tower. I’ve also seen a common thing with E-golems player especially that they just don’t seem to know that when it’s killed, it gives your opponent elixir. I’ve seen people (both teammates and opponents) use E-golem on defense with zero supporting troops.

It’s also like these people think they are playing 1v1 in a 2v2 game. Many times I will hover a log/spell over an incoming goblin barrel and my opponent STILL double logs. I also see a common pattern that these players don’t know troops work like just dropping an E-wiz into a 20+ elixir push as if the spawn damaged is a rocket or something or not knowing how to activate king with a firecracker.

I’ve played CR pretty much ever since it’s global launch, and people in 2v2 were no where near as braindead. I get that it’s supposed to be a casual mode, but how is it any fun if your teammate does shit like this and ends the game in a minute?
