Iron casting

I had a course in school for molding and casting, so I know the basics, like the difference between investment and sand casting. Now I have some old cast iron train parts I want to reproduce. All less than a pound, maybe up to 4” in the largest dimension.

I’m thinking that I’m going to scan them with my phone and import that into my CAD system, create some models that I can 3d print, then cast them. This is where I get lost…. I suppose I could investment cast them at this point by using a burnout grade PLA and apply the proper shrinkage factors. Or I could grow some nice solid parts to use as patterns and cores for sand casting. I suppose I could make my own casting box (cope and drag).

For the experts here, how would you approach this? I have a little knowledge, a good budget, and a willingness and ability to learn.

CARB legal?

If I want to get and drive an ACTY in California, I can register it first in Arizona, then move it here to California. But I understand that I have to make it CARB compliant and there’s a shop somewhere near LA that can do that. Does anyone know who or where?

TIA

Silo voice

Did anyone notice that the announcement voice during the last few moments “Seek shelter in the nearest silo as quickly as possible” sounded a lot like the AI voice in the Server room?

Flying a picture path

We’ve all seen them, those marriage proposals and male anatomy pictures drawn across the GPS tracking maps. I thought it would be fun to do my own sometime and it got me wondering, is there a way to draw the image onto a layer in FF so it shows on the map, giving you a path to follow in flight?

FF & FS210 & Sentry

I have a Sentry set up to talk to my iPad with ADSB-In and AHRS for synthetic vision. I just added a FlightStream 210 to the GNS530W. Since the FS210 also can send out AHRS data to the iPad, which data will be used to drive the synthetic vision on the iPad, Sentry or FS210?

The Sentry connects to the iPad via WiFi and the FS210 connects by Bluetooth.

CLA near Los Angeles?

I have a 500C with the 80 and 150 lenses. I just got a new strobe for the system and the 80mm lens won’t trigger the strobe. The strobe works perfectly with the 150 and when connected to the body sync connection, but not the 80. Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to send it? Last time, 40 years ago, I took it to a shop in west LA somewhere.

Or can I continue to just sync off of the body shutter?

ELI5: Log in with Google?

When I follow a link to some webpages, Zillow for example, a box pops up asking me if I want to log into the website using my Google account. How does Google know that I’m visiting that page?

ELI5: Data center water usage

Data centers everywhere are getting called out for their use of large quantities of water. I understand that the water’s being used for cooling, but where is it going? Does it just evaporate?
