Great Basin NP

Took my daughter to Great Basin NP for the weekend. It was my first time and a nice check mark on my bucket list of parks. We had a great time, hiked to the summit of Wheeler Peak, stayed at WP Campground (the resident herd of mule deer were adorable), ate at the Lehman Cave Cafe (absolutely delicious), took photos of the Milky Way (not terrible for an iphone), and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves (but are utterly exhausted).

If you haven‘t gone, go. It is a hiker’s paradise with a ton of trails from easy to strenuous. Wheeler Peak summit is no joke, but definitely worth it. I can’t say it is my favorite NP, but I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend visiting.

Total loss?

2018 Scab got in a fight with an immovable object over the weekend and I’m afraid the object won. It’s currently sitting in a tow yard, will be towed to body shop tomorrow for estimate.

Was doing about 20 when I hit a massive steel pipe head on while driving on a dirt road. I had just turned out onto the road, following a truck in front of me. I couldn’t see because of the dirt so I wasn’t ripping along at a high rate of speed. Then suddenly I was airborne and lots of crunching and squealing. No airbag deployment. No injuries.

What do you think? Totaled or it can be saved?

Chile Relleno, Spanish Rice, Giant Baked beans 🤌🏼🤌🏼

Wife and I got home late in the afternoon from a day at the lake, both tired, sun-kissed and hungry. We swung by our local store, conveniently on our way home, to grab something for dinner.

I saw the chile rellenos and had an idea, albeit not terribly clever, I admit. We could air fry the rellenos, make the insanely easy and tasty spanish rice, and toss in a can of the giant baked beans.

Holy hell was it delicious. I emptied the beans in the pan, then added the rice, I tossed in the sauce packet from the rellenos as well. Once the rellenos were done, i plated a giant spoonful of the rice and beans on the plate and set the relleno atop.

This kept the relleno nice and crispy, and the beans and relleno sauce made the rice really something special. This will now be in the regular TJ rotation for the family. Utterly delicious and highly recommended!

EDIT: My apologies for not taking a photo but I will rectify this later this week when I make it again for my entire family.

Yeti zipper wax saved the day

Wife and I headed to the lake yesterday for some paddle boarding. Perfect day. 80 degrees, intermittent clouds, light breeze. Snagged our spot and set up the sun shade, towels, and boards.

We had just used the paddle boards a couple weeks ago during a house boat trip we did at Shasta, but when we began using the pumps, both seized up and the “plunger” for lack of a better word, wouldn’t flow freely as we tried to pump and inflate the boards. Eventually, the pumps seized up entirely.

I took the pumps apart, and sure enough, whatever lubrication that the manufacturer had originally used was basically dried up, so the rubber gasket wouldn’t allow the plunger to slide up and down the tube.

My wife, the brains of the operation, immediately suggested the Yeti zipper wax we keep inside the Sidekick. And wouldn’t you know it, it worked like a dream. The pumps were pumping like brand new, and we were quickly on the water. An amazing day was had, all thanks to the handy dandy Yeti zipper lube. (I wish they sold it individually, but maybe it’s an excuse to buy another Hopper or maybe a Panga. 🤙🏼

Bull has potential

Saw this guy and 6 other healthy bulls while scouting for my September archery hunt. Should be a fun one. Hopefully he and I have another run in this fall, or maybe me and his big brother. Image was taken from a video clip I snagged from nearly 2 klicks away, so sorry for the fuzzy image.

Any experience with Alpacas?

I’m looking for feedback or inout from anyone who has actually rented or used alpacas for backcountry hunting, especially for elk or mule deer. I drew two choice NV tags (elk archery, deer rifle).

I’m considering renting alpacas for my hunts and am trying to figure out whether they are worth it compared to packing everything myself or using more traditional stock. I’m not looking for sales pitch info from rental companies as much as real-world feedback from hunters who have used them. I’m no longer a spring chicken and am trying to save my back and knees.

Anyone done anyone western big game backcountry hunting using alpacas to move gear in and pack meat and bone out?

Thanks in advance!

I hear this metallic rattle over bumps while driving. I held my phone outside my truck on my way to the car wash in hopes you could hear it. Sorry for the wind noise.

I’ve checked the skid plates, wheels and tires, brakes, bumpers, and driveline. Still can’t pin it down. Any help is appreciated!
