Wedding Shower Concerns

My fiancé and I aren’t getting married for another year and some change, so there’s definitely still time to think about this, but my mom has started talking about planning a bridal shower for me. She would really like to invite some of her close friends who want to celebrate with me, but they won’t be invited to the actual wedding.

Our wedding is going to be pretty small, around 50 guests. That already includes our immediate families, aunts and uncles, and about two friends each. We aren’t even inviting cousins because we both have large families and our guest list could very easily get into the hundreds if we started expanding beyond that…I brought up my concern to my mom because I know the general etiquette is that you shouldn’t invite someone to a bridal shower if they aren’t invited to the wedding. I especially don’t want anyone to feel like they’re being invited just to give me a gift or that a wedding invitation is coming later. I also want to make it clear that I absolutely do not expect gifts from anyone who attends. For me, this would genuinely just be about having people there who want to celebrate with us.

My mom completely understands my concern and said she would make it very clear beforehand that the wedding itself is small and they shouldn’t expect an invitation. She still really wants to include some of her friends because a lot of them have known me since I was a kid, and according to her, they already understand the situation and genuinely don’t mind. They just want an opportunity to celebrate me in some way.

There’s also a little more context that makes this meaningful to me. My brother passed away a few years ago, so I’m the only child my mom will get to have this experience with. Some of her friends have been around our family for years, and I think part of their excitement is also wanting to celebrate with and uplift my mom. That honestly makes me really happy because, while the wedding is obviously about my fiancé and me, I know this is also a really special milestone for both of our parents.

I’m not trying to justify bad etiquette, though, which is why I’m curious what other people think. If the guests are told upfront that the wedding is very small, know they aren’t invited to it, aren’t expected to bring a gift, and still genuinely want to attend the shower and celebrate with us, would you still consider it rude or gift grabby to invite them?

Some extra context: My mom is an older latina lady who barely knows English. I think in general she just wants to have a little party at her house like a luncheon or bbq. It doesn’t explicitly need to be called a shower, but I fear that it may not matter what kind of party it is or what it’s called😅 From all these responses, it seems like it’ll feel gift grabby either way but i’m happy to hear more perspectives if the name of the party makes a difference or not!

Update: I spoke with my mom and we all had a nice chuckle from all the responses, mostly because she was so unaware of the traditions here and was taken aback by how strict some of the rules are. It’s not that we don’t understand because we do get why some of these rules exist, however, my mom and her friends love hosting and no one has an issue with throwing a party. We decided that we simply won’t be calling it a bridal shower and make everyone aware that gifts are not necessary. I think regardless of what we decide to call it some people will bring gifts though because that’s just how they are🤷‍♀️I know some people will still think this is bad etiquette, but my mom, her friends, and the people they want to invite don’t mind and want to celebrate me and my mother.

Wedding Dress Shopping Chaos

I found my dress on Saturday, but had a chaotic time 😅

Since the area where I live is limited, I drove three hours to visit three different shops. Before I even went into the first store, I actually called my mom to touch base since she is paying for the dress. Here is how the shopping trip went:

Shop 1: I fell absolutely in love with a dress here! I had an incredible bridal consultant, but I didn't want to say "yes" right away because I still had two other appointments.

Shop 2: I had the WORST time. I have a sleeve and several other visible tattoos, and the second I walked in, I was treated differently from other customers. They rushed me out and told me I was too plus-sized for their samples. I get that I'm not a stick, but it felt incredibly unnecessary and hurtful.

Shop 3: I had another great, body-positive experience here, but l just didn't find the dress.

After that, I drove back to the first shop to try my favorite dress on one more time. I decided to send pictures of it to my mom. I know we have very different tastes and I prepared myself for her to dislike it, but I was hoping her support of my happiness would outshine that.

Instead, she spent 20 minutes trying to convince me why I shouldn't get it, even after I told her this was "the one" and that sending it was merely a formality. When I told her afterwards that continuing to tear down my dress was excessive and hurtful, she claimed I was being "too sensitive" and blocked me. She told me she'd still pay for the dress, but I'm just so confused and hurt.
Dealing with body dysmorphia, navigating the exhaustion of a 3+ hour drive, and rushing through 1.5-hour appointments took a lot out of me

Anyway, when I went back to the first shop my bridal consultant asked me how my appointments went and I told her the truth about my experience with the second shop. My bridal consultant and her manager immediately jumped in to make me feel special - they gave me an extra 10% off their sample sale, 15% off my veil, endless compliments, and snacks/drinks for the road. They made what could have been a really bad experience into a happy one (:

edit: I did end up saying yes to this dress btw!

also, if anyone is interested in this dress it’s Melrose by Milla Nova

i love my bridal party, but i’m starting to feel a little conflicted about my bachelorette. i’m a few years behind most of them in life. a lot of them are already married and either just had babies or have young kids. i genuinely love them and their families, and their kids are all invited to the wedding. but recently a few of them have asked if they could bring their babies to the bachelorette, and the youngest would be about a year old at that point. and i don’t know… i feel kind of torn. i completely understand not wanting to be away from your baby for a long weekend (thurs - sun), and i don’t want to put them in a position where they feel like they have to choose between me and their family. at the same time, i’m not sure i’d feel comfortable doing a bachelorette at an airbnb full of kids. i think i’d get overwhelmed, and selfishly it just wouldn’t feel like a bachelorette to me. i’ve been thinking about maybe skipping the bachelorette altogether and just doing a bridal shower instead. part of me is okay with that, but another part of me feels a little sad about it. for their weddings and events, i showed up 100%, and i think i’m just having a bit of a bittersweet moment realizing things are different now. i know it’s not really logical and i don’t blame them at all. i respect that their families come first. i guess i’m just trying to figure out what’s fair to everyone without completely letting go of something i was excited about. has anyone else dealt with this?

edit: my friends are the ones that suggested the long weekend since they all had long trips for theirs and i showed up for all of them but i don’t need one..we just started planning it and i guess im just having a hard time with plans changing since i put a lot of work into it 😅 ive decided to just have a small party like a bridal shower and have a spa day & dinner a night or two before the wedding since that feels true to myself!
