Difference between diary form,ㄴ/은 past form, and 는 descriptive form??

For action verbs, you can use ㄴ/은 to modify them into past tense:

가다 --> 간 or 먹다 --> 먹은

And you can make them descriptive verbs like this:

가다 --> 가는 or 먹다 --> 먹는

and the plain form is this:

가다 --> 간 or 먹다 --> 먹는

But for some reason in context, i can never tell which one is being used or when to use each one, so i misunderstand the meaning. How do you tell the difference?? I am constantly confusing them and using them wrong. Thank you!!

So I'm broker than broke, car is constantly breaking down, and I'm in college. My current one is unsustainable bcs the issues make it unreliable and I regularly get stranded places until it decides to work again. It's also a BMW (not my choice, I was gifted this car by my parents and it is 100% paid off) so every repair costs an arm and a leg.

I've researched a lot of cars and I basically keep coming back to Honda Civics and Toyota Camrys, but they're just too expensive. I need something that is usually 6-7K MAXIMUM, preferably a hybrid but just gas is okay, is long-lived, and easy to care for. I don't mind ugly crusty cars, just need a daily. Are there any years that are typically less expensive? The least I've seen is 10K.

I'm trying not to do a loan and car payment because I have not kept a job for longer than the summer due to moving back on campus for college, and the pay on campus or nearby is not enough to handle a car payment. Also, I have a collections debt rn that is tanking my score to "Fair" and until I negotiate that and pay it off, any loan terms would be so poor. My goal is to work full time this summer, save literally all I can, and pay off an inexpensive but reliable car.

I also wonder about hidden costs - I know a PPI costs some money, but other than that I don't really know how much I should put aside other than the cost of the vehicle. Sorry for the long post and thank you for any advice! I know the financial stuff needs to be worked out more clearly, but if I get an idea of makes and models to start looking out for, I can better decide my path.
