First Night Shift: No Training, No Login, No Manager… Is This Typical?

I started my first night shift, since it is my first shift it could just because because I am new and I am anxious but so far it’s been a shit show. I cannot get access to my account, they don’t have my bank information yet

On my first shift I was told to go to my section. I went there and I had no idea what to do so I asked around and a lovely girl showed me where to get the cages but that was it. Luckily I worked in a Tesco so I kind of knew the rules to facing up and filling the shelves but there was literally no support.

I wasn’t told that I could go on my break whenever I wanted. Later, a case of things were broken and there was no one there to tell me how to damage them since they were not refrigerated. I cannot get into my account, they don’t even have my bank details to pay me. I could have met my manager but I wouldn’t know 🤷🏼‍♀️ Is this normal and I am not used to it since I used to work in a small store or is it just the store I now work at?

During my whole shift I unbacked caged and faced up. I wasn’t even told if I was supposed to face up. I’m not saying I want someone to hold my hand every shift but J feel like there is no support at all

I want to be a good worker and not onto anyone’s load or be a burden but I wouldn’t know if I was doing a good job since I haven’t been told what to do. I feel out of my depth

All the staff at my induction said night shifts were hard

I had my induction to work nights at Tescos, the whole time the day staff (some had worked nights) were saying that nights is tough or nights is so hard, harder then any other role. I am not trying to be ignorant when I ask this, just trying to understand if the role is for me but why is it so hard? Is it because it’s genuinely a challenging role or is it because people aren’t night owls/ are there other factors that make it difficult?

I usually stay up all hours of night so I feel like I should be okay. I also worked in a small Tesco 6-11pm (close) where there was only ever me there on the weekends with a manager so I had to juggle serving customers and emptying Dollie’s (alcohol cages, freezer and milk which could not be out of the freezers or fridges for too long), rumble, face using up, cleaning in between serving customers. I feel like the little store was challenging so will nights be that level of intensity or is it harder?

What factors make it harder?

Books recommendation where the story is basically just one journey

I love books that the story takes place on a journey to somewhere. I don’t mind id the journey is only a small part of the book but I prefer it to be the whole book. I have only really ever found this in a couple of books

I don’t mind the genre if it isn’t horror!
