CMV: Paid Plasma Donation Should Be Legal and Carry No Stigma.

Plasma is vital for medicine, used in a number of different therapies as well as given directly to patients. However, it takes a LONG time to collect, and it seems difficult to collect without compensating people for their time. The rules for donating are also somewhat restrictive. As it is the US, one of the few countries that allows donors to be compensated, exports 70 percent of their plasma.

It has a seedy reputation in the US but plasma donation centers, in my experience, tend to be fairly pleasant places with a wide variety of donors.

It is also something that easily and painlessly regenerates, unlike organs.

Hallmarks on Conservative Catholics

Hey all,

A friend was asking folks for hallmarks of progressive and conservative Christianity. One person said a hallmark of conservative Christianity is "individual focus (ie Jesus died for me, individuals pray a prayer for salvation, focus on personal faith, etc) vs communal (ie we’re all saved, community minded/justice)."

Would you say that is true within Catholicism?

When Are Timeshares Worth It?

I know someone who bought a timeshare in the mountains of Colorado decades ago. Now they're paying $300 a week to stay somewhere that would be $1000 minimum to book as a hotel. Turned into an INCREDIBLY good deal.

Same person has an HGV "vacation club." They value it a lot, but the value there has always seemed more debatable.

When would you say a timeshare is actually a good deal?

What Leaders Would Be Remembered Differently If They Lived?

There are certainly some leaders who would likely have been remembered very differently had they lived, either better or worse.

I think there is a good argument that Julius Caesar, JFK, and Martin Luther King Jr. would be seen more negatively, or at least would be more polarizing figures. You can probably add Alexander the Great to the list too..

Lincoln is the only example of the opposite that comes to mind. If he had lived he potentially would have been more successful in guiding Reconstruction (though there is a decent argument the other way too).

Trying to decide what should go into a review, and a rating [USA]

I just had a pretty so so stay and I'm trying to decide what is worth giving less than five stars for, or even less than four.

Some things were more or less out of their control, but good to know. The main example of this was construction right next door, with all the noises that go with. I probably won't factor that into my rating, bur might mention it in my review.

I had several other issues that were within their control, but are big fixes. The unit was a second floor duplex in a manufactured home, and it definitely had that "old trailer" smell. Lots of the fixtures and details were worn and/or VERY dated, and the stairs, railings, and deck were obviously in poor shape, though didn't seem dangerous other than splinters.

In terms of the small stuff, everything was fine. The hosts were responsive, the unit was clean, and everything worked. It was just deeply unimpressive.

What Is The Equivalent of Genocide for Disabled People?

Is there a term for the mass eradication of disabled people, either broadly of specific groups?

Examples being the victims of the Nazis, eugenicist programs, etc.

OEM_Knees Lore

I always assumed they were a boomer. No offense to boomers. There's a lot of real ones out there. But the anger and self-assuredness fits a certain stereotype.

Apparently they aren't?

So my new guess is a teenage boy. Or a bot.

What's the lore here?

Anti-Abortion Bill in NC

There is a bill in NC that would put to the voters a referendum saying life begins at fertilization and all applicable state laws will be applied, ie. abortion would be considered attempted murder or murder.

This is entirely logically consistent with the mainstream "pro-life" argument. If personhood begins at conception, this is entirely appropriate.

However, the bill has zero chance of passing. It is unlikely to even make it to a floor vote and the other sponsor, someone who is fervently anti-legal abortion, dropped it.

Why?

Because it would make women who use the morning after pill subject to the death penalty.

It could even create a legal pathway for people to, for example, kill an OB who was offering IVF.

If you consider yourself "pro-life" but disagree with this bill, why? You could argue that the death penalty and legal vigilante justice aren't consistent with being pro-life, which is entirely fair, though it kind of skirts the issue since the NC state law around murder isn't like to change. But would you still support it if the penalty for the above was life in prison?

What to Do With Old Boots and Helmets

Any suggestions on what to do with old boots and helmets? Any creative reuses? Recycle them? I suppose I could try to sell the boots but they're about a decade old at this point.
