Finally Got my Zf the Lens it Deserves!

The Voigtlander 40mm F2 Septon!

I’ve been using the F-Mount Voigtlander Ultron adapted to my Zf since 2023. While it’s been great, I’ve always felt like it kind of ruined the vibe of the camera.

I had been lusting over the Voigtlander 50mm 1.0, but I stumbled upon this guy for nearly half off MSRP on the used market and had to go for it instead. I used the left over cash (along with the sale of my 35/1.8S) to also get the 35 1.2S for my Z8.

Previously, before I purchased the Zf I had the Voigtlander 40/1.2. Which was a great lens, but always felt a bit weird on the Z7 I had at the time. I also never shot it wider than F/2… so I don’t think I’m missing anything by not going that route either. Instead I’m gaining a smaller package at a more affordable price. That being said, the Zf with the 40mm might look small, but it’s a porker. On my scale, with grip, it tips in at 1061g as compared to my X100V at 519g.

I haven’t yet had the opportunity to really put it through its paces, but I did take it on my bike ride with me today and grabbed a few snaps. I got to say I’m very happy with the results. The photos obviously are nothing special, but I don’t really notice any issues that would be a deal breaker for me. Of course I’m not much of a pixel peeper.

Compared to my 40mm F2 Ultron, it seems very similar, just with better ergonomics and I can finally use the aperture ring.

Compared to the TTArtisan 50mm F2 Z-mount, this thing is massively better. The aperture spins in the correct direction, the focus spins in the correct direction, and the electronic contacts mean that my exif data is recorded automatically. The coatings, distortion, vignetting, corner performance, and close focus all seem to also be massively better on the Voigtlander compared to the TTArtisan… of course they should be given the MSRP is nearly 10x that lens.

Also, the three shots of the Zf itself are with my Z8 + 50/2.8MC and some bounce flash. So I think they technically qualify as Nikon photography as well :D.

Got Two, Whoops!

I couldn’t decide if I wanted to the blush switches or the red switches for my Air75, so I ended up with both!

My initial plan was to return the one I liked less. However, after spending about an hour going back and forth between the two, I think I might keep both!

I really like typing on the keyboard with the red switches, however, I love how quiet the keyboard with the blush switches is. My reason for picking up a new keyboard was down to my old keyboard (with clicky switches) being way too loud for Teams calls. With that in mind, I decided to keep the blush for work purposes as it’ll be better on calls. The board with red switches? I’ve committed to using for my iPad and MacBook Pro.

NBD! 2022 Crockett Radioactive!

Well I suppose only a kind of sort of new bike day. I picked up this lightly used 2022+ Crockett Radioactive as a frameset and then swapped over all of the bits off of my trusty 2017 Crockett 7.

That means, it’s a Force CX1 11 speed groupset, paired with the stock saddle/post/stem/handlebar from 2017. I have however swapped the stock wheels to Hunt 4Season Gravel Xwide and also added a Stages left sided power meter.

Now the question is do I list it as a new bike on Strava or do I just note the frame swap under components. The original bike had about 13,000 miles on it.

Dad Bike!

My little guy recently learned to ride his precaliber, so of course I had to build up a bike to ride with him! Obviously would be better if I had the stranglehold version, but this will do for now! Funny enough, it’s actually heavier now than stock.

Garmin sync taking 5–10 minutes now… is this the “gold standard” experience?

I thought Garmin was supposed to be the gold standard for GPS devices, but lately syncing feels like I’m using cutting-edge technology from 2008.

I’ve got an Edge 1050 and a Forerunner 970 paired to an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and syncing has turned into a full-on routine. After a run or ride, it takes 5–10 minutes to upload an activity. Pushing a route or workout to the device? Same story.

And of course, it’s not just “wait a bit and it works.” It’s more like:

  • Open Garmin Connect… nothing
  • Force close
  • Reopen
  • Toggle Bluetooth
  • Maybe walk around the house for better “signal” like it’s Wi-Fi from 2006
  • Consider restarting my phone as a sacrifice to the Garmin gods

Eventually it syncs. Usually. After I’ve questioned my life choices.

What’s wild is this used to work fine last fall when the devices were brand new. Activities would upload in seconds, routes would just show up, and I didn’t have to babysit the app like it’s a toddler.

Now it feels like:

  • The app doesn’t wake up unless I beg it
  • The devices stare at my phone awkwardly before agreeing to talk
  • Something is clearly getting stuck, but there’s zero visibility into what

For a setup that costs… what, well over a grand total… I kind of expected “finishing a workout” → “data appears” without a 10-minute troubleshooting ritual.

I'm honestly kind of annoyed I drank the koolaid and sold my Wahoo Bolt and Apple Watch for these pieces of trash.

Is there a time constrained option hiding somewhere?

Last year I used Runna to train for my first marathon and had a great experience.

However, this year, I just want to run for runnings sake. I do still want to follow a plan and have structured, but I'm more concerned with hitting three runs per week. Two 45 minute runs and one 60 minute run.

The trouble I'm running into is that Runna keeps assigning me two runs that are less than 45 minutes and one run that is more than 60 minutes. It's honestly all over the place week to week with how long the prescribed runs take.

I do my runs during my lunch break at work, so I really want to lock in on a time window. This is easy for me to do on the cycling side with TrainerRoad, but I'm on the struggle bus figuring this out on the Runna app. I actually ended up bailing on my last Runna plan because it kept assigning progressively longer workouts that I couldn't fit during lunch.

Just to drive the point home, looking at my current plan there's a number of weeks where it's like 4.5 miles, 5.5 miles, and then 14 miles for the three runs... The first two are too short and the last one is way too long.

2011 EX Coupe

On the way into work today, I was just thinking how nice it is to cruise along rowing through the gears with no giant touch screen staring me down and all physical buttons. She might be slow as fuck, but I love how analog this car is.

I wonder how many of these non-Si manual transmission coupes still exist? I don’t see very many on my commute.

Edge 1050 Bluetooth pairing stuck — iOS says paired, Garmin Connect says failed. 2+ hours, tried everything.

I've been trying to pair my Edge 1050 to my iPhone (Garmin Connect) for over two hours and I'm losing my mind. Here's exactly what happens and everything I've already tried:

The symptom: The pairing PIN matches on both devices, I tap Confirm on iOS, it says "Accessory Paired" — then immediately throws "Pairing Failed / Unable to pair your Garmin device." The Edge stays stuck on the PIN confirmation screen. Garmin Connect never shows the Edge 1050 as a device, only my Forerunner 970.

What I've already tried:

  • Removed the phone from the Edge (Settings → Phone) and re-paired multiple times
  • Forgot the Edge 1050 in iPhone Bluetooth settings and started fresh
  • Force-quit and relaunched Garmin Connect
  • Deleted and reinstalled Garmin Connect
  • Toggled Bluetooth off and on
  • Restarted the Edge
  • Tried pairing via QR code and manually

Important context:

  • The Edge 1050 WAS paired and working before — this broke on its own
  • My Forerunner 970 is connected and working fine in the same app
  • iOS Bluetooth successfully completes the pairing — it's Garmin Connect's app layer that fails

Has anyone solved this? Could it be a conflict with the Forerunner 970 on the same account? A Garmin server-side issue? Really don't want to factory reset and lose my rides.

I forgot how much I loved this game! It’s honestly probably the most fun game I own. I know it’s not strictly a Nintendo title, but I haven’t for n64!

I’m also kind of surprised any of this stuff works after sitting in my parents crawlspace for 20 years. Of course, I had to hit up 8bitdo to upgrade the controller though. My OG controllers were a bit crusty.
