I want to become a nanny, but I don’t know where to start
Hi everyone!
I’m an 18-year-old college student looking to become a nanny to make some extra money while I’m in school. I originally planned on working at a daycare, but with my class schedule, that really isn’t the best fit for me right now. I’ve always loved working with kids, so nannying seems like a great option, but I honestly don’t know where to start.
I keep hearing mixed (and sometimes really bad) things about apps like [Care.com](http://care.com/) and Sittercity, so I’m a little hesitant to rely on those. Are there better ways to find nanny jobs? Agencies? Facebook groups? Word of mouth? I’d love to hear what worked for you.
A little about my experience:
I’m the oldest of six siblings, so I’ve been helping care for children for as long as I can remember.
I’ve babysat for friends and family over the years, including children of different ages.
My grandmother owns and runs a daycare, and I’ve spent time helping out there as well, so I’m comfortable around groups of children and understand basic childcare routines.
I know this isn’t the same as having years of professional nanny experience, but I’m responsible, patient, eager to learn, and genuinely enjoy working with kids.
I also have a few questions:
Should I get CPR/First Aid certified again before applying or is my highschool certification okay?
Is it worth going through an agency if I’m just starting out?
What hourly rate is reasonable for a beginner?
What are some red flags to watch out for when interviewing with families?
Is there anything you wish you knew before becoming a nanny?
Any advice, tips, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. I really want to do this the right way.
Thank you!
