Allowing a child to have foods you know his parents don’t allow, just to not exclude him from an activity?

Hi everyone! I’m quite new at this and looking for some advice. I just finished my technical certificate in ECE but I have only been officially working with children for about 2 1/2 months, so there’s a lot I'm still learning to navigate!

My lead teacher has planned an activity for next week that involves the kids digging around in cereal (captain crunch oops all berries) and scooping it into buckets. We have 1-2 year olds, so more than likely, a great deal will end up in their mouths.

  1. I’m not sure whether we are supposed to give the kids food that doesn’t meet nutritional guidelines, even though it’s for an activity? (we participate in the state food program) But I’m having trouble finding information.on that, so I’m not sure. (I live in Indiana.)
  2. I would really prefer not to give 1s food that is basically just sugar and dye, but I don’t know whether that is my place to say something as the assistant teacher.
  3. There is a child in our class whose parents pack his meals every day because they have strong preferences for what he eats. I know for a fact that they do not allow him to have things with dye in them. I started to bring this up to my lead teacher, trying to ask what was the plan for making sure he didn’t eat any of the cereal. She cut my off, getting a bit defensive, and said that his parents know we do activities like this and it’s not like the food choices are because of allergy, just preference, so it doesn’t matter.

To me it matters a great deal. I’m only 19 but when I have kids one day, I would want those caring for my children to respect reasonable choices, such as what I allow my child to eat.

I really don’t like giving any of the 1s sugar and dye, but I certainly don’t think it’s right to allow this particular child to eat it.

Am I rhinking too much of this? Is it not my place to say anything?

Should we even be allowing the children to consume food that doesn’t meet nutritional guidelines? Is it unreasonable to want to respect these parents wishes for their child when it goes against what my lead has planned?

I would really appreciate perspectives from those who have been doing this a lot longer than I have. thanks!

What was your "I can't believe these words are coming out of my mouth right now" moment this week?

Mine was "We don't eat our friends..."

I meant to say "We don't eat our friends with a dinosaur; they don't like that." But I couldn't get through the sentence without laughing with my co-teacher, mentally adding it to the list of things I never thought I would say in my life.

What is a random life tip you want others to know?

I'll go first: Putting a few drops of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel/cotton ball and smelling it can make your nausea go away. A nurse taught me this after a surgery, and it has worked many times.

Recent self harm marks while getting my blood drawn?

I (19f) relapsed yesterday after 1 3/4 years clean from cutting. I wanted release and I was tired of the “pressure” to stay clean.

I thought it would be fine because it’s always cold where I work and I can just wear long sleeves. But I forgot that my doctor wants me to get labs done soon!

So now I’m trying to figure out the best course of action, because the cuts are on my forearm. None of them are very bad, they barely bled and they are all scabbed over. But they are very obvious as to what they are.

So I’m thinking:

  1. Will it matter to the phlebotomis? Do I even need to say something or try to cover it up? or will they hopefully ignore it?

  2. Should I try to wait until they are mostly healed before getting the labs done?

  3. Or should I try to cover with long sleeves and hope they will accept my “clean“ arm, even though my other arm does have better veins for blood draws?

Have any of you had to get your blood drawn while having recent marks? I would appreciate your insight. Thanks!

Why can't I post?

I've tried posting in a few different subreddits that require minimum account age and karma. I have 8 Karma and my account is 6 months old. It says the minimum requirements are 5 karma and 3 days old, but it's not letting me post?

In the state of Indiana, can a child who sexually abused another child be charged after the “abuser child” turns 18?

When I was a kid (multiple times between the ages of 2 and 9) I was sexually touched by my cousin who is 2 years older than me. I am a little foggy on the details.

It‘s a complicated situation, but he hasn’t done anything since we were kids, and I do NOT want him to get in trouble. I’m 19 now.

However, the experience affected me in ways I want to process in therapy. When I was 17 I wanted to bring it up in therapy, but I was warned that my therapist would be required to report it since I was still a minor.

Now that I’m 19, would my therapist still be legally required to report what happened when I was a child? And could my cousin still get in legal trouble for what he did when he was at most 11? If so, how long do I need to wait before he could no longer get in trouble for me talking about it?

Thanks!
