Uber and Lyft engineers are testing a new manipulative feature: pushing bonuses and surge zones to the edge of your location.
Drivers, over the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed yet another dirty algorithmic manipulation tactic targeting us. This new dynamic deployment serves two main goals:
- Keeping you online and moving empty: The system hates stationary drivers. Instead of reflecting actual passenger demand, it deliberately relocates heatmaps and bonuses just outside your immediate geofence to trick you into burning gas and driving empty.
- Chasing phantom spikes: It’s a psychological carrot-on-a-stick designed to maximize your online hours while minimizing corporate payout scaling.
The algorithm is cold, hard mathematics—it executes precisely what the engineers code. The only way to change this behavior is through collective driver discipline. Do not chase these moving bonuses, and stop accepting trash requests. Enforce strict per-mile filters ($2+/mile).
This is currently an active platform test. If drivers fall for it and keep eating up garbage rides, corporate will permanently lock this predatory feature into the system. Stop panicking over app status colors or tier levels. A "Platinum" status won't pay your bank loans or replace your tires. Wake up, protect your vehicles, and stop letting an app treat you like a pawn.
