In the 20th century, the military junta that ruled from 1967 to 1974 suspended democracy, imprisoned thousands of citizens, and used systematic torture against political opponents. That same regime’s reckless attempt to change the status of Cyprus in 1974 brought tragedy to the island.

These dark chapters show how easily nationalism, military ambition, and the desire for revenge can lead to moral failures. The lesson is clear: no matter how just a cause may seem, targeting civilians, abandoning democratic values, or pursuing expansion through force always leaves a stain and creates new cycles of pain. True strength lies in protecting human dignity even in difficult times, respecting international law, and choosing peace over domination.
