Lever action: 357 or 44mag?

Looking to buy a lever action for a laugh. No real need for one or needs to fit a purpose at the moment, but possibly later on when life settles down. I've gone against 30-30 and 45-70 because of ammo costs and I don't reload.

My questions:

  1. what's your take on 357 vs 44? I've only shot 44mag handguns, no experience with 357 - I'm sure either handles fine out of a rifle. The Model 29 44mag was a handful for me

  2. Henry vs Marlin vs Browning? Leaning more towards a Henry, then Marlin. Anything I need to know or understand? In not sure that my LGS stocks them, but will make an effort to try and see them in the skin. People seem to dislike the modern Marlins and the tactical variants - I think they're alright. Same for the Henry X

Optic mount: How to get one of these to Australia?

I'm after this particular mount, which appears to only be available in the US. IT's an Empire TRIGA Acro mount. The places I've found it don't ship to Aus. I understand the US are strict with optics, and accompanying accessories, being send out of their country.

My questions are:

  1. if you have managed to successfully get optic mounts sent from the US to Australia, from somewhere that stated that they don't ship outside the US, how did you circumvent that or what was your process?

  2. is it a case of "too difficult and expensive" to do, given the restrictions between both countries?

"second" .22LR handgun within first 6 months of General Category Handgun License

Just wondering if you were in your first 6 months of a full handgun license in Vic, and already owned a .22 handgun - can you buy another upper that matches and would be used on your existing frame? The upper requires a PTA, but as it's going on to my existing registered handgun - will it be signed off as an interchangeable part and not seen as another complete handgun?

Select all squares with MOTORCYCLES

I keep getting asked and I'm sure I'm answering it correctly (zero, none, no motorcycles). What am I doing wrong?

AIMPOINT ACRO quality control

I recently got an ACRO C2, it was delivered sealed in plastic and the box looked a little dusty. When I removed the plastic, the packaging was still dusty, which I thought was weird. Then I noticed that something was stuck between the outer and inner box - it was a dead moth! WTF? When people drop Aimpoint money (especially in my country where everything handgun is $$$) they expect sterile, clean-room assembly standards, not a stowaway entomology specimen. The black box inside was fine and the unit itself seems problem (and moth-dust) free - but as my first Aimpoint, what an introduction. It also had two copies of the same manual included... it must have come off the assembly line at 4:55 on a Friday afternoon.

Fake Aimpoint Acro Final Form

This was my son's previous work https://www.reddit.com/r/volquartsen/s/CMUJeOqfrq - but he felt like he needed to make it more accurate (the brightness buttons and the elevation/windage dials). I feel like the extra red Lego piece with the arrows would be a nice addition to the real one!

There won't be any more versions, though - he's moved away from Lego for the minute and on to drawing the two members of Daft Punk 😎

Fake Aimpoint Acro

My son has been watching me check out red dots on the internet lately and has decided that he likes the "mailbox" the best... so he made me one out of LEGO. The viewing box is to scale, so it's tiny AF. It also slides up and down the pic rail, so you can adjust it on the fly! Little legend. He also knows that this will probably be his VQ one day, so he's making sure it's kitted out how he likes it...

B709A import permit for a compensator (VIC)

I've had an issue with a factory compensator on a .22 and have reached out to the manufacturer in the US. They've said that they'd send me out a replacement through EasyExport: happy days. Just wondering if anyone knows if I need a B709A import permit for it? Thanks in advance

***edit: I'll call LRD tomorrow (it's their only day in the office, apparently) and find out for sure, but just want to plan ahead and see what you guys know about it***

Volquartsen compensator steel dowel pin removal

Hi all, I'm having trouble removing the steel pins from a compensator. They won't tap out, I soaked them in G96 overnight to loosen them, but no luck. Anyone got any tips or tricks to solve this issue?

Best red dot for a Picatinny-mounted Volquartsen .22?

***update***
After user feedback (thanks, gang) I'm going with the Holosun 507 Comp in the green - and have discovered that there's a 507 Comp Pro Max (that's even bigger and has solar) that's around the corner. There seems to be a bit of reliability problems on the Defender XL, but it has a crisper dot and the lifetime warranty would sort out any issues. I like the 2moa + 8moa ring, and also the 20 and 32moa ring, so the winner is Holosun. Thanks for all your help!

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to put a red dot on a Volquartsen .22 (it’ll be mounted directly to the top Picatinny rail). The problem is, the deeper I dive into the research, the more choice paralysis I’m hitting. There are tons of options across wildly different price brackets, and the consensus on each seems to conflict. For reference, this is my first pistol red dot, my skill set is basic - but I'm enjoying the journey and having fun along the way.

Here is a quick breakdown of where my head is at with the main contenders after reading a million threads:

  • Trijicon (SRO / RMR HD): Obviously the most popular choice, but they are incredibly pricey. Also, it feels like Trijicon's technology is lagging a bit behind the actual innovators in the field right now. Is the premium still worth it for a rimfire range/competition gun?
  • Leupold DeltaPoint Pro: Still seems popular, but a lot of recent user feedback says they are pretty outdated compared to newer glass. (full disclosure: I’m not a huge fan of Leupold's rifle scopes anyway, so I’m already biased against this one).
  • Holosun (507Comp/509): Seems like the undisputed value/entry point. People don't really seem to beef with them mechanically, only that they aren't considered "top-tier" by the brand purists. The large window on the 507Comp looks appealing for a rimfire setup.
  • Sig Romeo-X Pro & Vortex Defender XL: Both seem reasonably priced (roughly half the price of a Trijicon). The Defender XL has that massive window and the legendary Vortex lifetime warranty, and also has a picatinny rail mount in the box! I’ve read a few mixed reviews on the reliability of the early batches, but: lifetime warranty.

Because this is going on a flat, non-reciprocating Picatinny rail on a zero-recoil .22lr, heavy duty "duty proof" ruggedness isn't my absolute number one priority. I care much more about window size, dot clarity, and overall tracking. I’d prefer a green dot if I’m honest and had the choice - I’m colourblind (strong deutan), so can track green easier.

For those of you running high-end rimfire pistols or steel challenge setups, what actually makes the most sense here? Cost isn’t the main issue (I mean, it is - but this hobby isn't cheap) so do I cry once and buy the Trijicon, go with the massive window of the 507Comp/Defender XL, or am I overlooking something else entirely like an Aimpoint?

Appreciate any insight from people who have actually run these side-by-side.
