Full aftermarket exhaust on a LAMS bike — how do you keep it legal and insured?

Looking at putting a full system (not just a slip-on) on my CBR650R, but want to keep it LAMS compliant and not risk my insurer knocking back a claim down the track. For anyone who's actually done this — did you go through an engineer for a compliance cert, stick to specific brands, tell your insurer upfront, or just wing it? Based in the ACT if that changes anything. Keen to hear how people have actually pulled it off rather than just theory.

Why some people accelerate when you trying to switch lane?

Was riding on Hume Highway back home today, tried to switch from centre lane to left lane so I can turn left into a branch road, saw a beater Toyota Corolla travelling at around 60 something on my left, so I accelerated a bit to switch the lane (my signal was already on for a few seconds).

Then that Corolla straight pedal to the metal, get right next to me, I thought he may trying to match the speed limit, then I accelerate a bit more right to the speed limit, try to switch lane again, then that Corolla straight goes over 70, just to keep his bonnet right in front of me. I just gave up at this point as I don't want to risk myself a speeding ticket, and tried to slow down to let it pass first.

Then I suddenly hear tire screeching, as that car just discovered there were parked cars right in the front. Don't know whether it crashed or not as it straight disappeared from me.

Of course I missed that turn and had to go for another minutes for the next turn...

As a new rider/driver, I just can't fathom what drives these people to do this...

Failed the MOST test

Hey guys, today I had my MOST test and I failed terribly. I was told I needed to use the hire bikes because my clutch was damaged and it was pouring down non stop rain. Everyone else passed except me and I just feel so stupid. I was wondering if anyone else failed as well and are a confident rider now. Just wanted to get this off my chest and see if anyone had the same experience :(.

Just booked my Ls. Looking for recommendations and some LAMS advice.

Hey everyone!

I've just booked my learner rider course for next month and I'm super excited. In the meantime, I've been going down the rabbit hole researching bikes and trying to figure out what I might want to buy once I've got my Ls.

I'm very new to all of this, so I'd love to get some advice from people with a lot more experience.

From what I've seen so far, I seem to be drawn towards the more retro, modern classic, naked kind of aesthetic where you can actually see the engine and there's less plastic fairing. I really like bikes that look a bit more mechanical and timeless rather than super sporty. A couple examples of bikes I am liking are the Royal Enfield Classic 650 and the Triumph Speed Twin 900.

I'd love some recommendations for other reliable bikes with a similar look and feel, especially anything that's LAMS approved.

I also have a question about the whole learner/provisional bike progression: Would you recommend just buying something cheap and learner friendly to get experience on, then sell it once I'm on fulls and then buy a bike I want to keep longer term?

I've also heard that you can buy a bike that's factory LAMS restricted, then derestrict it once you're on your fulls. Thinking that could save me from having to buy, sell, then buy again. If so, are there any models you'd recommend that fit the sort of retro/modern classic aesthetic I'm after?

Finally, if there are any bikes, brands, or even categories you think I should be looking into based on the style I've described, I'd love to hear them. I'm still learning the differences between all the different types of bikes, so any recommendations or beginner tips would be amazing.

Thanks so much.

2016 Z300 oil leak

Hi everyone

Nice to meet you all, I’m new here. I recently lowsided my bike and snapped the rear brake assembly and scratched the clutch cover.

As I was driving home, I noticed smoke coming out from the sides because oil was leaking and touching the pipes. The oggy knob looks bent. We noticed oil seeping from the head-gasket region, which dripped down the block and onto the exhaust hence the smoke. I think it might be the valve gasket cover.

The visible crack I’m referring to is on the oggy bracket not engine frame. But it’s mounted onto engine bolts so frame damage can’t be fully ruled out

Please let me know which part/s is damaged and how much approximately it would cost to get it fixed at a mechanic.

First night ride!

Hey all!

Got my Ls a few weeks back, finally got a bike (cfmoto 450clc bobber), fucking loving every second on the bike!

Been out for 3 25kms runs around where I live. Hit a top speed of 80kmph. Just taking stuff slow. Honestly, feeling really good on the bike. I get a bit nervous when I am suiting up for the ride but once I'm on I'm just locked in big time.

Finished work today and figured I'll go for the first night ride seeing as it isn't raining. Ended up having to pull over because my visor just about fogged out completely! Popped it up a few clicks, wiped the condensation off and kept going.

When I got home I was like "shit, I've got that pin lock and the helmets not a cheapy. I should see what Google has to say"...

Yeah.. I didn't have any of my fucking vents open!

Figured some of y'all might get a chuckle out of it. I sure as shit did.

I do have a question about lights. Noticing that I often am getting stuck at reds lights because I'm not triggering them. Any tips on how to trigger them? I've just been rolling myself back and forth like a dipshit and nothing is happening.

NSW - Please help, might lose my licence over a 7km/h speeding fine and I'm terrified

Hey everyone, genuinely stressed and hoping someone here has been through this.

I'm on a P1 rider licence in NSW. About 10 days ago I got caught doing 67 in a 60 — 7km/h over, first ever offence. I already paid the fine without realising what it actually meant for P1 riders.

Turns out any speeding offence on P1, no matter how minor, triggers an automatic 3-month suspension — separate from demerit points entirely. I didn't know that when I paid.

Since it's already paid, I can't challenge the fine in court anymore. My only option now is to wait for the Notice of Suspension to arrive, then appeal it within 28 days.

Here's why this is hitting hard: I'm a full-time uni student, working shifts that start at 6am, and I rely on my licence to actually get there reliably. I've just bought a car too. A 3-month suspension isn't just inconvenient for me, it genuinely threatens my job. My workplace doesn't have any train station or proper buses.

What I actually need to know: Does a suspension on my rider licence also take out my car licence, since they're both under one licence number? Or are they separate?

Once I appeal the suspension, is a section 10 / no-conviction outcome still possible, or does the appeal only shorten the suspension while the offence stays on record?

Has anyone actually been through this — P1, already paid, appealed the suspension — and can tell me how it went and what actually helped?

I've contacted LawAccess and I'm waiting on a callback from a community legal centre, but I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been in this exact spot. Even just knowing what to expect would help me stress a lot less right now. Thanks so much for reading, genuinely appreciate any advice.

PSA: Do not buy from shark leathers!

Bought some jeans that fit way too small for the size they are, and returned for a new larger pair. Not only did they bump up the price so I had to pay an extra $30, but they also took over a week to just send the dispatch email the first time, then two weeks to reply to my exchange email, and even now they still haven’t dispatched the new order… and supposedly theyre based in Australia!

Don’t waste your time. Literally pick any other place to buy gear.

airbag vest - Dainese smart jacket good or not?

Hello,

I'm seeing Dainese smart jacket on clearance for 500 dollars - does anyone have experience with that? Any other airbag vests people like, especially without subscription fees?

I don't have any special requirements like protection during low-speed or off-road riding - most of my riding is on the motorway and suburban roads.

Options for a daily 170km commute

Seeking some informed advice on best 170km daily commuter options. I travel daily between northern Gold Coast and Ipswich, and return. No bike at the moment, but I have an open licence with most of my riding on dirt. My preferred route would be via rural roads through Beaudesert or Jimboomba; I don't want to contend with Gold Coast Hwy and Logan Mwy traffic.

I was thinking V-Strom 1000 or similar, based on other posts. I'm old enough to not have an ego so I'm open to any options. Mainly looking for something to add to my life; make the commute nicer; but still use the car when it rains.

Advice/options, please.

Haven't owned it for a week.

I was at my friend's apartment, neighbouring the royal melbourne hospital and is directly facing a police station (as you can see in the photo) and I heard my bike startup. As I came down to check for it, it was gone and the airtag was on the pavement. Building management refuses to provide CCTV without police intervention and the police keeps replying to me with "it's undergoing investigation". I've been losing my hair looking for it all over facebook marketplace hoping the perpetrator is dumb enough to have posted it on there.
I haven't even taken it for one ride.

It's a Yamaha R3 with very distinct features:
No backseat
Gold colored accessories all over the bike
GoPro attatchments under the right mirror and on the rear

Stolen in North Melbourne, Victoria.

Someone pushed my bike over in the train car park

Tonight got back from work Box Hill 5.30pm train car park and two police PSOs are standing next to my bike laying flat on the ground, fab helped me lift it up and accidentally accused me of number plate not matching bike- sorted once upright. Kawasaki versys x300 screen pressed up against a car and panniers bent. A bit to process. Another commuter said it happened about 7am some person bashing shopping trolleys into cars and being a dick. any how my question is I had it on a centre stand, disc lock on front disk, air tag where I cannot even remember where I put it what more can I do to leave my bike alone. I really would like to hurt the person that did this but aI guess they have other stuff going on.

Bike colour visibility

Looking to get a new bike and I’m tossing up between Yamaha blue and black. I think I would slightly prefer black but I’m cautious about the fact of blending into the road more.

Am I overthinking it and being unreasonable? I ride defensively and always aim to be in no blind spots etc also my gear isn’t fully black it has some white/hi-vis. Does a black bike actually make a big difference for being visible?

Melbourne to Darwin

Hi everyone,

We’re planning to drive from Melbourne to Darwin with our 3-year-old child and wanted to hear from people who have done a similar trip.

Is it a good idea, or would you recommend flying instead? We’re planning to take our time over several days rather than rushing.

I’d love to know: • How many days did you take? • Which route did you choose? • Any good places to stop overnight with a young child? • How were the road conditions? • Anything we should be aware of, especially when travelling with a toddler?

We’re mainly doing it for the experience and to have our car with us in Darwin, but we’re open to any advice or tips.

Thanks in advance!

Crash cage - buy it online then bring to the mechanic or just ask the shop to do it?

Hi there, wanting to install a crash cage kit for my Honda CB125. Should I buy one online and then have the shop install it for me, or should I ask the shop to handle everything? Also, is it legal to install it by yourself? And how hard would it be?

By the way, is it legal for LAMS bikes in NSW to install a crash cage?
