I miss the old Namor

I miss the old Namor

Up until the last 20 years of humiliation rituals Namor had been over Sue for decades and the two had become genuine friends with Namor even have friendly enough relationships with the other 3 members of the team. He got married and widowed, he threw away his only chance to be with Sue in order to save her marriage and protect her happiness over his own. He spent actual decades watching him grow and develop and now it feels like Namor showing up in F4 book is a humiliation ritual packed with all of the character assassination for all parties that you can fit is present

It’s to the point that these days this character assassination is all people know this genuinely deeply layered and complex character for. It’s like if the Hank Pym slap kept happening over and over again like a bad family guy gag

(1979) Top 50 kill counts as of the end of 1979

Our final update of the 70s with some real breakout superstars in this sport of mass destruction! The top 10 hasn’t been shaken up like this since 1945, so you can assume 1985’s update will be equally if not more major.

This time around we can begin adding other characters published by marvel but not owned by them as most are generally canon like with Godzilla battling the champions.

For those curious Spider-Man is up to 3 kills btw

Also a heads up I may start shrinking the time frame between posts as 5 years of marvel 1980 onward is not the same as 5 years of marvel used to be with there just being a lot more content and kills becoming far more commonplace. Also to give you guys an extra treat, I’ve begun the project for DC as well so you’ll probably be seeing that coming up before too long

Why is the DC fandom wiki so substantially worse than the marvel one?

I’ve been doing a project of reading all of marvel in release order and I’m up to 1979 at present and I want to start the same project for DC, but DC’s fandom wiki lacks the same tool I’ve been using for the marvel project and does not show me each publication week of the company’s history

And the more I looked the more I saw even the most basic articles are horribly out of date and unkept

So is there a reason such a useful resource for the fandom is in such a sorry state of disrepair?

When did Kraven go back to being a bad guy?

I’m a big SG fan all in all and throughout her book from
2015 to her 2022 canon to 616 radio show he was on the up and up in the self improvement and path to redemption. Was there a point where he backslid or is this just a case of spider books ignoring whatever a spider adjacent character does or experienced outside of ASM?

Since 7 years of him being on the up and up is just sad to see go entirely untouched these days

Squirrel Girl runs the gauntlet, everybody in character, how far does she make it?

A win counts both if she just punches them out and wins by force or if she talk no jutsu them into ceasing hostilities; either quitting the battle and whatever heinous thing they were up to or simply coaxing them to surrender or leave or befriending them

Waylon is out for the blood of a mobster who wronged him, the Rogues are out to snatch a big art collection in Central City, Slade has a contract to kill a diplomat she’s playing bodyguard for, Lobo’s got a contract on her, Black Adam is after Felix Faust for scamming him in regards to his wife’s resurrection and Darkseid is doing his old school invasion of earth shtick

Can she thwart all of their wicked deeds?

Back when Beast was Mr Steal Your Girl

I really do hope that now that Beast is back in full swing we get the classic lady killer, watch your girl without even trying, beloved by the public across the board including anti-mutant people Beast back

Because this is the Hank we have again now, Mr Fine Shit himself that even the anti-mutant government had to take pauses in their mutant hating ranting to glaze him. Straight up some “god we hate mutants!… except Beast, he’s fresh af and we cannot fathom an avengers team without him, we should really pay him extra this month” timing

And I can’t help thinking it would be so fun and funny to have this universally beloved in universe king of being glazed Hank back to his full self. It’s good to see he’s got his pure heroic heart back, now I’m just eager for the rest of him

And yes for those wondering Spider-Man’s short time girlfriend at the time did in fact ditch him to go glaze Hank as well

Never ask Thor what he was doing in WW2

Thor canonically was summoned by Hitler, tried to murder the Invaders for Hitler and then tried to murder Joseph Stalin for Hitler whom Namor had to save from him

This was like right before Thor got Donald Blake’d btw

When does Daredevil get consistently good?

For the last year and so I’ve been reading the whole of marvel comics from 1939 in publication order and previously rough books like the X-Men and Iron Man have recently gotten good. And DD has certainly improved don’t get me wrong, but he’s currently on Iron Man’s old style of giving me steadier and more frequent dopamine hits but eventually sending me back to eat my brussel sprouts for a year at a time.

The introduction of Bullseye, the return Hell’s Kitchen from San Francisco and Widow finally finding her personality and leaving the book have all helped. It feels like we’re right around the corner from finding our stride. I know Frank Miller’s run is in the 80s which I’m excited for, but I just wanted to see if it picks up before then or if that’s what I’m waiting for

Mighty X-Men: A team roster and series concept

Immediate disclaimer, this is a concept for an Uncanny Avengers spiritual successor hence why we have a half of the team as non-mutants AND why the X-Men are borrowing the Avengers editorial name. A unity team effectively, but with a focus not on superheroics (of course we’d have plenty of time to play with super heroics) but on building up mutants within New York and directly connecting hero teams both mutant and not. Maybe Uncanny Defenders? But it felt strange to call them Defenders without Strange or Valkyrie

With Beast back to his old self, he is specifically at a very special period of his life; his Defenders era. So while he now lacks his connections to his fellow X-Men beyond the O5 outside of passing and being generally positive in his opinion of them, he’s very deeply rooted in his connections outside of the X-men and still at the prime of those connections. This puts him in a very special position, it doesn’t just mean the most heroic X-Man is back to the peak of his heroism, it means Xavier’s most successful student and the original dream of unity itself has been revived in full.

It makes him the perfect middle ground. The perfect person to spearhead a proper unity team with a focus on building up mutantkind as a part of humanity rather than apart. Not building up isolationist island nations purely of mutants, but building up specifically a mutant community within NYC itself as an act of collaboration.

Not a Genosha or a Krakoa or a Utopia, but a Harlem or a Brooklyn or a Queens.

This specific roster would be headed by him and each member is chosen not because of power but because of what they could contribute to helping to build up this community and unity. As well as a connection to Hank specifically with two exceptions of course.

Giant Man is the classic Avenger pick, the only one more senior than Beast, but also a Hank grappling with his sins albeit this Hank doesn’t have the luxury of having those sins wiped from his ledger or being able to turn back the clock. It gives a good counterbalance. He was also a teacher during Laura’s time at Avenger Academy, so we have some good familiarity there with his daughter Nadia specifically being my pick of Wasp which I’ll get to later. On top of that he and Angelica are close as he’s the one who cured her in the past which could give us a bit of fun tension between him and Emma.

Firestar is there as she’s one of the New Warriors and on top of her connection to Giant Man and the Avengers, she’s familiar with life as a non-x hero. It makes her a no brainer as one of our mutant picks here. It also gives us some tension in the team of course between her and Emma while also giving us an enjoyable means to have the surviving New Warriors like Nova and Night Thrasher and Speedball popping around as recurring supporting cast members and allies

Emma is a big star here as you can tell, but also because I quite care for the bond her and Hank used to have. That bond is gone now, but I’d like to see it developed again, to unpack things between Hank and her as well as using this to give Emma a chance in the wider superhero sphere in a less combative role. She cares deeply for the future of mutantkind, this would be a great chance to spotlight her and form new connections be it negative or positive within the super community. Plus it brings in the cuckoos as supporting cast members which is always fun!

Hellcat is Hank’s first friend outside of the X-Men, she was who was with him when he was undergoing his changes from very human to the furry blue beast we see today. He walked with her into becoming a superhero and so it’s only right his oldest bosom buddy be here. And she offers a VERY special thing in that she runs a superhuman work agency where she finds jobs for superpowered individuals who don’t want to be heroes or villains, it was originally tuned for the major boom of Inhumans but could work wonders for a community of mutants who just want to be a part of society. She’s the perfect right hand woman for Hank in this!

Laura is our Wolverine, she has a lot of close relationships with heroes outside of the X-Men like Kate Bishop and even Squirrel Girl who would be brought onboard by Laura for this because I think they do have great chemistry. On top of that she’s another strong connecting fiber between the X-Men and the greater super community. I also like the idea of her, Doreen and Nadia forming a sort of trio within the team, a mutant, a human, and somebody who isn’t quite either or. I also think her and Nadia would hit it off, their lives are shockingly similar and I think they’d relate to each other very well.

Sam is our Captain America, not because he’s our current main avenger Cap, but because of his history as a social worker and a champion for the people of Harlem. His stories tend to be focused around uplifting his own marginalized community which is why I think this would be a great chance to both help dig him back into his roots as well as to give this team their Cap.

Nadia is here as our Wasp because on top of those fun dynamics with Laura and SG I mentioned earlier and her desperately needing more time to be on panel with her dad, community outreach and such is her bread and butter. She already runs Pym Labs stuff as a community thing for girls, so this would also be right up her alley on top of her experience as a Champion which would also bring us characters like our other Nova, Ms Marvel, Miles and even the Vision family as supporting cast!

And the Doreen who would be brought in by Laura like o mentioned before; she is no doubt the iffiest one for most of you reading this but uniquely she spent a long period of her life believing she was a mutant only to learn she was not. She has a lot of experience as an outsider and never quite belonging to any group because unlike mutants or humans or synthetics or anybody else, she’s one of a kind. She also spends a great deal of her time trying to reform bad guys and to get them on the straight and narrow, she’s a master of mediation, of trying to see the other side of things and to see another’s point of view. On top of being great for the general energy and dynamic of the team, she’s exactly the kind of person who would fit this team perfectly.

And of course we’d get frequent appearances from people like Mayor Luke Cage and of course down the road Wonder Man would join up as well with I’m thinking Blob also getting his bar set back up on the ground floor of the team’s very publicly accessible building

Great Vanguard Picks #1: Take the Count Nefaria pill

Behold, the villainous gangster of a man who can spin the block on entire rosters of Avengers and X-Men alike! Even on top of his power grid putting his strength at a 7 (the highest it can go) and both his ranged attacks and durability being at a 6 (right below the maximum) his powers are perfectly suited towards the role of a vanguard.

This includes the ability to make energy constructs such as SHIELDS or potentially walls depending how you would want to approach his design.

But importantly he is also an energy vampire, giving us a good chance at a unique tank with a vampirism ability. And let’s not forget on top of that, he also is a horribly dangerous mad scientist, that alone is the perfect means to feed him any sort of ability you could want out of a tank.

And if you don’t want a ranged tank? He’s a master swordsman and can outright brawl with the toughest of the tough. There are few villains so outright vanguard coded as Count Nefaria.

And tell me with a straight face you don’t wanna play as a classic gangster who’s also a vampire and a doctor doom type. And as an idea for his vampirism… maybe he has an ability that lets him drain enemy over shield to charge up the health of his own shields or to shrink the cooldown?

AND on top of it all, he’s a classic avengers and X-men villain going back to the 60s with steady appearances and showings all the way up to this decade

So what does Bobby and Warren’s relationship with their fellow champions look like these days?

Been re reading their old Champions run and it got me thinking about how these guys full on lived together and worked together, they fought GODZILLA together, etc etc

So what’s their relationship looking like with Hercules, Nat and Johnny these days? Or is it a case of X Office not letting the kids see their friends again?

Of all people Paste Pot Pete just had his soul annihilated, man is out here without a soul these days

This is the first time a hero did anything like this in marvel and of all of the potential deserving victims it’s PASTE POT PETE

This poor bastard 😭

Who would work well for marvel’s Legion of Doom?

So first things first; Marvel does not have a Legion of Doom or an equivalent

This is largely because marvel’s big league baddies like Doom have a compulsive need to betray other villains when they team up which inevitably leads to a collapse of any long term team or cooperation between baddies outside of cliques.

What makes the legion of doom unique is that among them there is a sort of friendship, each one has proven capable of long term cooperation and collaboration without flipping the table on their own side. For example Sinestro and Black Adam just actually rock with each other, as do Cheetah, Manta and Grodd and as do Luthor and Joker even if they act otherwise. It’s why so many flash and Batman villains are on the roster; they all have proven capable of working together and collaboration without the back stabbing. There’s a fucked up kind of friendship within the Legion.

Some members will even risk themselves to save other members. They’re prolific haters. They focus on the league, but menace every team and hero as easily as the league. A true threat to the world like a well oiled machine.

So realistically, who would make up marvel’s legion?

(1974) Marvel’s top 50 kill counts as of the end of 1974

Back again with the kill count project after months and months! ‘70-74 took more time than the rest of the project put together! These years got very dense on content, but also on kill counts. I’m proud to report that the sport of mass violence is back in full swing in the marvel universe and our players are putting points on the board again whether it be consistent and steady numbers like Conan and Dracula or big cash ins like Thanos. Some star players of prior years have fallen off with new prospects showing great promise!

We even have some shocking performances like Peter Parker getting a kill before any of his villains ever did. Upcoming prospects to look out for on the next installment are Wolverine, Ghost Rider, the Punisher and Magus!

Feel free to ask questions and of course as ever cheer on your favorite athletes in this great sport! And once the counts get interesting enough we’ll eventually see our first official top 100 (in spite of nearing 300 confirmed killers)

Until next time! I’m Toast, your host! And keep it devious

When does Ghost Rider get good?

I’m doing a project where I’ve been going through all of marvel publication week by week in a bid to be able to say I’ve read all of it. I’m currently up to 1974 after starting 1939, recently I got Ghost Rider into my rotation, but he just isn’t quite as cool as he is in the modern day which I of course expect.

They’re not gonna get it perfect right away. But after finishing his stuff in Marvel Spotlight, his issue of marvel teamup and some of his own series I just wanted to check when he starts getting great or if it’s more a case of this being a sort of rough run for Johnny in general

I’ll be doing this each time I conclude a year’s of comics in my complete marvel reading order project as time goes on since the process has really slowed down since hitting the 70s as it’s just far more content dense than prior years!

So feel free to ask away! Lots of fun plot lines this year and breakout super stars like Luke Cage and Man-Thing with cool events like Avengers vs Defenders and Thanos War

Feel free to ask about prior years as well! I figure this is a great excuse to actually share about older comics people wouldn’t have time to read or have difficulty sitting through
