Looking for restorers/repairers in the UK

Not my proudest moment, but when I was a grotty teenager at a British boarding school in the 1990s I stole this watch from the props department at the school theatre. I thought it was a nice timepiece and it probably deserved a better home than being bashed around as an amateur dramatics prop. Anyway, fast forward to earlier this year and it resurfaced in a house tidy up. I have since discovered the history behind the watch and I’ve ended up on this sub…

It winds up, it works, it doesn’t hold brilliant time, but I would like to start using it as part of my watch collection, I wear a watch daily.

What should I be looking for when approaching someone to repair/restore the watch? Anything specific I should ask for? I have a lot of experience with mechanical things, but no experience of working on watches, so I don’t know what to ask for when it comes to services.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a strap that would suit this small watch?

Lineage on my XZ1C, finally

I have always struggled with custom roms on my Android devices, mainly as I've found the xda developers forum to not be so good at describing the steps needed to achieve an outcome - perhaps it's the way my brain is wired and it is just a me problem. Anyway, since having a Claude Code sub for my software engineering work, I figured I would let Claude figure it all out. And here we are - flashed completely from within Claude Code inside VS:Code, running Lineage. Really happy to have this on something newer than Android 9. Tempted to put my sim back in and rock this for a while - it's in my T2E at the moment.

Give me the Tl;dr on early ipace ownership, would I be mad?

Interested to hear from iPace owners, whether i’d be in for financial ruin if I go for a cheap iPace with zero warranty…. 20-22k miles/year, would be replacing a 220k mile Chevy volt. I buy my cars with cash and keep them till they die. I don’t treat them well (they usually get used as a van and washed once a year)

I‘m not keen on an SUV, but I feel I don’t have a whole lot of choice these days and these seem to be ‘quite nice’…. I don’t have home charging but have workplace and will be reliant on rapids when out and about So DC charge curve is important, I often do long distance in the Uk and Europe.

Servicing/restoration recommendations

I have a couple of vintage (1940's) watches that function and hold time but could do with cosmetic cleaning and mechanical servicing. What questions should I ask when approaching watch repair shops, and what should I ask them to do/not do? I understand that cleaning of the watchface might be a good idea, but that repainting it is a bad idea...

New to watches that need servicing, open to all advice.

The watches in question are: Gold JW Benson gentlemans dress watch (gifted to my late father when he left an insurance company), West End Watch Co, Sewar Prima, Indian civil service issue watch.

The days of the £10k ex taxi are over?

Starting to consider replacing the 2013 plug-in with a model 3 sr+ lfp (2022), I was researching this 6-8 months ago and there were plenty of high mileage ex-taxis available (the sort of thing I buy, cars end their life with me) - looked again on autotrader now and theres nothing for less than £12-13k…

Is the day of the £10k ex-taxi long gone and I’ve missed the boat? I see that Stebbings sold every one that they got their hands on…

PR0003 "7 REG(s) unPlaced" on GW5AST-138 with AE350 hard core — no diagnostic path to identify the failing instances

Hi all,

I'm building a fairly full design for the Tang Mega 138K SOM (non-Pro, PG484): the AE350 RISC-V hard core plus my own DSP fabric (~85k registers, 83% CLS, 26 DSP blocks). Gowin EDA V1.9.12.03 on Linux, scripted gw_sh flow.

Placement always fails with ERROR (PR0003): Failed to place with '7 REG(s) unPlaced' — deterministically, and the tool never says which registers. I've eliminated: every placement/synthesis option (place_option, map_option, opt_goal, replicate_resources — all make it worse or change nothing), device_version B vs C (identical — incidentally, my understanding is Docks shipped since mid-2025 carry the 138C die under the same part number, happy to be corrected), removing whole subsystems (made it worse), and even deleting the CST entirely (158 unplaced — worse than pinned!). 85,325 of 85,332 registers place fine; the last 7 won't, no matter what.

Questions for the community:

  1. Has anyone pushed a 138K design with the AE350 hard core past ~80% CLS and seen PR0003 with no instance names?
  2. Is there any known trick to make the placer report which instances fail?
  3. Has anyone compared placer behavior across Gowin EDA versions on this part? (Wondering if a newer/older build reports more or places better.)

Ticket is open with Gowin in parallel; I'll report back whatever they say. Happy to share the full option-sweep data if useful.
