Best layering system for the Sierras?

I’m really confused as to what I’ll need for my 600 mile Sierra route.

What I’m currently bringing:

Worn:
\- sun hoodie
\- shorts
\- shoes, socks & boxers
\- hat

Packed:
\- rain jacket
\- synthetic puffy
\- windbreaker jacket
\- wind bottoms

Everyone always mentions Alpha. Would this replace the synthetic puffy, or should I bring it as another layer? Or should I bring the alpha and leave the puffy at home? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I know the weight isn’t much but I I dislike the complexity

Lightweight Anorak/ pullover options?

I’m looking for a puffy with a kangaroo pocket and have narrowed it down the EE Torrid & the Montbell Down Anorak.

Are there any other good options that people are aware of?

Thanks!

X-Dome Feedback

X-Dome feedback

I’ve been using the X-dome now for the summer and have had several trips in it and I have two small pieces of feedback about the tent.

First point - I wish there was a small orange night light pocket like on the NEMO tents. My base weight is about 5.5kg so I don’t bring a separate lantern. I’ve used my head torch as a night light in the X-Dome and it’s just ok and not *great.* Even if there was just a see through mesh pocket somewhere on the roof it would be welcome

Second point - I’d love the solid inner version to have one door that fully opens to allow mesh only. This would add a tonne of versatility to the solid version and would allow you to keep the bugs out on hot nights. The current version only covers about 1/3 of one half of the door. I’d love to see it go the whole way down on the 1+ (and even just one of the two doors on the 2 would be good). It would be great for views also when shut in

I know these two changes add material to the tent so they’d make a tiny bit heavier, but it think they’d both be awesome.

In terms of the rest of my experience the tent has been excellent. It’s been a joy to use.

I’m trying to go ultralight but I just don’t think I can…

I’m going to do a 600 mile section hike of PCT next summer after a very bad leg break last year.

This will be the first 100+ mile trip that I’ve done, and I’m really excited. I’ve been trying to dial in my gear to make the journey as fun as possible (light is part of the fun).

That said I’ve tried to drop weight to get to the 5kg mark (ultralight?) and I just can’t bring myself to drop the extra 1kg (2.2lbs).

My gear is 6kg exactly (13.2lbs). Would this gear make sense for the PCT? I know one area I could drop weight is the tent (about - 650g if I got a Zpacks Altiplex). Also I’m aware I have no protection for my legs except for shorts, very happy to hear people’s perspectives on this.

Is there anything else I should leave at home or change?

On a different note: I’ve managed to drop 20kg (44lbs) of weight that I’ve gained when bed bound with my broken leg, so I’m trying to make this work on multiple fronts!

Edit: I’ve dropped the following

- beanie (redundant with my buff)
- pack liner (switching to a plastic one)
- tentatively ditching the wind shell
- the spatula is GONE (😆)
- BV One will be swapped out for an approved bear canister
- camp shoes are gone

I’m now close to 5.5kg and a tent swap would bring me to sub 5kg. I’ll keep tinkering and digesting your feedback

Progress pictures - journey

Ok so these are a few pictures. Sharing so people have another point of reference. I’m 8 months in

I started with an ok baseline and started taking oral minoxidil (2.5mg and recently 5mg daily) around January 1st 2026.

The picture from a year ago was my weak side & im aware that I look much less trampy in the new pictures (wedding) but showing so you can compare.

The oral did seem to grow lots of small fussy hairs but they didn’t really shift to dark (terminal) hairs until recently.

I actually started using minoxidil foam about a month ago and have done that pretty much daily. I don’t know if the oral just took a while but the majority of my growth happened when I switched to foam.

I think there’s legitimate change with my beard density and colour. Before minoxidil I’d have to shave my beard at an about 5mm to see decent stubble. Now I shave it at 3mm and have more visible stubble than I did at 5mm.

Overall I think it’s been totally worth it. All I’d say is be patient, it’s taken me 8 months to get these results (some may not say it’s much but I’m very happy). I’m going to keep going for another year and probably ditch the meds as soon as I can. The foam might stay a bit longer just to taper more slowly.

Also you can see from the pictures there more light fussy hair there, so I think it will fill out more by the 12 month mark

Feel free to ask questions. I’m 35

Will ultralight ever shift to grams?

Ok I know this will be contentious, but it’s just to get people’s perspectives.

I want to preface by saying that the whole idea of UL was popularised by Americans who used ounces and pounds and that’s really cool*** I’m just seeing what people think about using grams.

Reasons for this:
- Grams go to smaller increments (28.35 grams in an ounce)
- grams scale to kilos 1-1,000 so easier to work with
- grams always convert to 1ml of water* so easier for conversion for volume and capacity for packs and water carries

Realistically I know that all cultures have their own ways of doing things and I’m frankly doing my best to learn the imperial system, but while doing so I’ve realised grams might be easier for this community and just wanted to know your thoughts

Do you think FIFA has been targeting England over the years?

I always had a feeling we were being screwed every tournament (Saka choke slam, hand of “god”, the penalty for Ghana etc).

Do you think FIFA has actively being targeting England (the guys that keep winning the best sportsmanship awards)

Edit: I’m not suggesting this is the case, I’m just opening a dialogue. Like others have mentioned I think it’s probably just the “Eurovision effect” where other nations don’t really like us but aren’t overtly trying to sabotage us. That said, another person here made the point that African teams get treated the worst, which I agree with. And I do think Messi/Argentina gets special treatment, it’s pretty obvious imo.

I do not think France for example gets special treatment
