Once a Karachiite, forever a Karachiite

Born and raised in Karachi for around 26 years when I had to move abroad for training. But I miss the city so much. Nothing like it. The roads. The shapaatri. The dhabay. My friends and family. Life was difficult. Resources were limited. But the heart was at peace.

People talk about the cost of the matching process. But no one talks about the cost of settling in the USA once you get matched.

I have drained 4000 dollars from my savings ever since I came to the US to start training.

This includes:

  1. A lot of Uber

  2. Airbnb cost

  3. Eating out cuz we don't have a proper kitchen

  4. Apartment applications

  5. Moving in fee

  6. Utility deposits

  7. Basic furniture and crockery

I'm financially, physically, and mentally exhausted even before July 1.

Why is research so hyped up during the match process?

If someone is an excellent researcher, they should become a scientist and join a lab.

Isn't residency about training clinicians? Then why is research so hyped up?

What are some good apartments in Chicago that rent to international trainees who don't have a US credit profile yet?

I am an international medical graduate who will soon begin residency training in Chicago. Since I do not live in the U.S. and I don't have a credit profile, I'm finding it difficult to find landlords who are willing to rent to somebody without a credit profile.

I'm looking for recommendations for apartments that are resident and international medical graduate-friendly. I'm looking to live somewhere in the middle of North Chicago and downtown because I have two training sites, one in North Chicago and one in downtown. I don't have somebody who can co-sign a lease with me.

Thank you for your recommendations!

Are Airbnb safe in Islamabad?

So, I'm looking to visit Islamabad soon, and I'm confused between booking a hotel and Airbnb. My primary concern about booking an Airbnb is safety and privacy.

Most reviews on the Airbnb website are by locals, so I cannot be too sure if they are legit or not

Apps and Resources for PGY-1 Internal Medicine

Hey everybody. I'm going to be starting as a PGY-1 in Internal Medicine this July, and I wanted to know: what are some apps and resources to be aware of that will make my life easy as I go through the intern year? Thanks for your responses.

IMGs, how are we supposed to rent apartments before going to the US?

Everywhere I've tried, I've been denied because I don't have a US credit profile, SSN, or taxpayer ID.

How are we supposed to rent an apartment then?

I'm sure thousands of IMGs go to the US each year and none of them have any US-based identification numbers.

I know co-signing is an option but I don't know anyone in the US who would be willing to co-sign a lease.

What are your thoughts?

DS-2019 delay.... the anxiety is real

Inthealth seems to be taking forever to issue the DS-2019, and getting a J1 visa date is also another struggle. The anxiety is getting real. Is anybody else facing the same situation? I'm not sure if we will be able to start on time.

Why do I keep seeing profiles without any picture? Don't people realize that attraction begins with physical appearance? Nobody falls in love or gets attracted to your personality, background, education, or whatever at first glance. If you want to increase your chances of finding a partner, you guys better start posting your pictures.

Sorry, I'm not sure what the area is called exactly, but I'm looking for reviews on how safe it is to live here. Google Street View shows that it's a bit worn out and seems like a rough area.

I'm trying to look for an apartment in North Chicago suburbs like Libertyville, Buffalo Grove, Lake Bluff but all I can see on Zillow are unfurnished apartments. Is it usually difficult to find furnished apartments for rent? Are there any websites that specifically list furnished listings?

So I anticipate 2 potential delays in starting residency on time:

  1. The J1 application on myinthealth is taking forever. It's been more than 4 weeks but im still waiting for ds2019.

  2. 2/3 consulates in my country are closed. As a result, people are getting a date in mid-July for J1 interview as of now.

Keeping these in mind, it seems almost impossible that i will be able to start on 1st July, let alone attend the orientation in mid June.

If someone has experienced this before, how did u deal with it?
