Doc Holliday Played Faro, Not Poker

A short film on the middle revolver of the Tombstone Trio, the set of three engraved Colt Single Action Armys I featured over the weekend. The barrel carries the gambler's real trade in gold script: FARO, with Bucking the Tiger beneath it.

Faro dominated much of nineteenth-century American commercial gambling. Two cards drawn each turn, a case keeper tracking every card, a copper token to reverse a bet. An honest bank held only a narrow edge, and honest banks were less common. Both Holliday and Wyatt Earp dealt the game, and Earp held an interest in it at the Oriental.

Piet Parra / NSFW

Got these at a gallery show in LA about 20 years ago. 19.5” x 27.5” prints. Signed 6/25 and 2/30. Framed behind museum glass before they got hung on walls. Some dog ears from storing them flat before framing them a few years after purchase. All colors are still vibrant. Like to find out what gallery show I purchase from and a possible year. Any ideas on how I might figure that out?

Stage 1 fire bans, Propane grill ideas needed...

New location in the mountains. Second summer in a row with Stage 1 fire bans. No combustible‑heat grills… Not even sort of. I obviously comply, since we like living here. We use to enjoy our BGE MiniMax. Family of two. We don’t entertain often enough to justify a full‑size propane grill. Trying to avoid big‑box cheap stuff in favor of something well‑built. Any suggestions for a premium, compact-ish propane grill?

USFA Nickel 5 1/2" w/ Stag

Just picked up another USFA SAA, serial number 26,2xx.

For those who track the USFA production timeline, this 26xxx range should put this one in the sweet spot of late production. Being past the 22500 cutoff line, this would appear to be a 100% all-USA, Hartford-built gun with no Uberti parts.

The fit, finish, and overall machining on this one is great. 5-1/2" chambered in .45 Colt with a nickel frame and stag grips.

Anyone else have a gun close to this 26xxx block, or any insight into what the factory was doing right around this serial range before they ultimately closed the doors?

USFA "China Camp" single action.

Specialized run from the USFA era: the "China Camp" single actions.

These guns were specifically designed by and named after legendary SASS World Champion Dennis Ming, whose cowboy alias was "China Camp." For those who might not know his history in the sport, he was a powerhouse.

Specs: The China Camp guns started with a CC prefix and a 3-digit serial number. They were hand-tuned, meticulously sighted, and shipped from the factory with an individual test target. Even when measured against the exceptional standards of the entire USFA production run, these stand out as incredible shooters.

The only real issue I see people commenting on is that they were factory mirror-polished and left entirely "in the white" with no finish. They require a bit of diligent maintenance to keep them looking pristine, but the look and the action on them are great.

Thick flanken-style ribs

My wife picked up some flanken-style ribs from a great local shop. We usually marinate and toss them on a hot coal grill, but these are thick... About 1/2"! I’m worried they won't cook through by the time the outside is properly charred. Some have suggested smoking them first, but I'm not sure how that would play out. Any ideas?

Context:

  • 4 Bone flanken-style ribs, 1/2" thick

I marinated and chamber sealed them late last night before bed:

  • Soy Sauce
  • Water
  • Brown Sugar
  • Toasted Sesame Oil
  • Rice Vinegar
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Black Pepper
  • Green Onions
