Universal oil viscosity?

I was in the motor oil section recently and there were two dudes there pondering all the different bottles. I wasn’t really paying attention to them but then one said something to the effect of:

“We’ll just put 10W-30 in it. That’s universal oil for everything.”

I have never in my decades of driving heard such a thing. Have you?

Back when I was a kid 10W-30 was pretty common, but the only thing I use it in now are my generator and my 30-year-old mower.

PS: I did tell the dudes that I was pretty sure 10W-30 could damage their car’s engine if it was designed to have a different viscosity.

70-200 wants to be a tilt-shift

Don’t feel bad for me. I knew this was a gamble going it.

I bought this 70-200 2.8G as-is from a local guy for $100. At the time of purchase, the zoom was locked at 200mm but it worked.

I got it home and put it on my F6 to mess with it, and then things got weird. A group of elements got loose and went sideways.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a shop to send it to for repairs? Anyone care to guess what the bill might be?

I realized today that I have had this socket set for at least 25 years. I don’t know who made it, but it’s come in clutch so many times.

I bought this not long after I got my first car. It’s been through so much with me.

I request help fixing my Dixon 3361.

My mower would start after I took it on a trip by trailer.

After verifying the battery and solenoid were not the problem, I opened up the starter cover to find that this plastic gear was wedged into the flywheel and missing most of its teeth.

I removed the starter and got the gear to retract. I hooked it back up to the wires and turned the key, and the starter turned.

So, is it easy to get replacement gears for this starter or should I replace the whole thing. The local shop had nothing in stock but said this should be the right part: https://a.co/d/0cCb0Wzh (PN 435320)

I included a pic of the engine tag if that helps. Motor is a Briggs & Stratton 28M707.

Got new tires for an old Dixon 3361, and now the chain is rubbing the sidewall.

It’s such a slight rub, but over time it could be a real problem. I wonder if I should try a 1/4” spacer to put the tire a smidge further out.

Towing speed?

I am trailer shopping and I checked the manual on my ‘23. It says to not exceed 62 mph while towing.

So first, that seems oddly specific.

Second, is that what everyone here is doing? Is this a mechanical warning or is Honda just covering its ass from a legal perspective?

One week in, and I don’t care if you think it’s a truck. It works.

My wife demanded I replace my 2011 Silverado 1500 with a newer, safer, and more comfortable pickup. I did a lot of test drives and was leaning toward an F150, but they are absurdly big and the quality just isn’t there. I was even looking at Subarus, but I need a pickup bed of some sort for dirty hauling.

Last Friday morning, I did a search for Ridgeline and found the nearest dealer had more than a few with about 3 years on them (former leases I think) and had them marked down. I normally take days to decide on buying a vehicle, but after a perfect test drive and some haggling, we reached a deal and the salesman and F&I dude stayed late to make the sale. I left at 8:30 with my 23 Ridgeline.

I’m happy, my wife is happy, and now my dad wants one too.

But now I am shopping for a trailer because loading a riding mower in the bed is a nightmare, and unloading it is even worse.

Pickup -> Outback

I have driven pickups for the past 15 years. I like them, and I have to regularly haul dirty stuff, but maybe 10% of the time, if that.

I am wondering about getting a Subaru outback with a trailer hitch and a small cargo trailer for the times I have to haul nasty stuff.

Has anyone made this switch themselves?
